Great Kosa Limited, is to establish a vehicle assembling plant in Ghana

Accra, Jan 06, GNA-The technical division of the Kristo Asafo Church, the Great Kosa Limited, is to establish a vehicle assembling plant in Ghana.

The proposed site would be a 400-acre land acquired at Okyereko, near the present location of the company at Gomoa Mpota, in the Central Region Mr. Festus Owusu Badu, General Secretary of the Great Kosa Limited said that the Company, under the Church's leader, Apostle Dr Kwadwo Safo, was negotiating with a German company, the FAW to help establish the assembling plant in Ghana.

In an interaction with journalists after a presentation on the Company at the 59th Annual New Year School, underway at the University of Ghana, Legon, Mr Badu said the Company was also in contact with some companies in China to commercialise the production of its vehicles.

Mr Badu said the Great Kosa Limited, which currently employs about 400 people, so far had produced a saloon car, two types of cross-country vehicles and a limousine in 2007, which it called the Kantanka Obrempong. Some of the proposed vehicles, according to Mr Badu, which would be produced in large quantities would be saloon cars, pick ups, cross-country vehicles and buses.

The main problem however, was about funding, but the Company was in touch with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning for support. Mr Badu underscored the importance of the application of appropriate technology in promoting community development, adding, "non application of local appropriate technology rather helped foreign technology to thrive" He observed that Apostle Safo understood technology very well, and could manufacture some of the equipment that would be needed in the assembling process, adding that the works of the company had been well documented.

Participants at the School were later shown electronic items, and designs of electronic items produced by the Great Kosa Limited. The Annual New Year School is a one-week extra-mural programme organised annually by the Institute of Adult Education of the University of Ghana and the theme for this year's event is; "Tertiary Education and National Development".

Akufo-Addo using state resources - NDC

Accra, Jan. 04, GNA - The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed concern about the use of State resources on the numerous activities of the newly elected flag bearer of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The statement, issued by the Deputy General Secretary, Elvis Afriyie-Ankra said; "Whilst we do not begrudge him his constitutional and fundamental rights of freedom of movement and association, to pay courtesy calls on chiefs, opinion leaders and other dignitaries and to organize numerous parties and dinners for his friends, supporters and sympathizers; we are appalled by the creeping abuse of state resources and machinery to the disadvantage of the other president candidates.

"This is manifested in the array of state motorcades that escort him wherever he goes. On his visit to the Agbogbloshie market, he had in his retinue a whole contingent of military and police personnel."

It appears also that, some of the State media houses have decided to become the official mouthpieces of the NPP and their candidate, it said. "We wish to reiterate that, a peaceful, free and fair elections is determined not only by activities on the polling day, but on a level playing field characterized by equal opportunities for all the various political players.

"It is curious to note that during the NPP primaries, most of the aspirants, including Nana Akufo-Addo complained about the unfair advantages and executive bias in favour of one of the candidates. Were those complaints genuine or merely self-serving?

"We urge the government of the NPP to be circumspect in their use of state resources in this election year. This call is even more imperative in the face of harsh economic realities characterized by unprecedented high prices of petroleum products, which has virtually eroded the purchasing power of the majority of Ghanaians."

Cable thefts and illegal mining affect Aglo Gold production

Kumasi, Jan 5, GNA - The incessant activities of illegal miners (Galamsey) and cable thieves on the mining concession of Anglo Gold Ashanti Obuasi Mines is posing a big threat both to the lives of mine workers and production levels at the mines. In 2007 there were 53 cable thefts in which the company lost close to 757,000 dollars whilst it could not also make any profit apart from not meeting its set target.

Dr. John Miller, Managing Director of AGA Obuasi mine, made the disclosure when he was interacting with journalists on Friday, a day after the latest cable stealing attempt that set ablaze the whole underground electricity system leading to the power outage and trapping of 30 miners. He did not mention the amount involved in the set target but said the company would have to part with between 500 to one million dollars to restore power to the affected Northern Sector that had been shut down. Dr Miller said efforts were being made to resume work at the mines, the closure of which is causing a daily production loss of between 500 to one million dollars.

Mr. Yiadom-Boakye Amponsah, Sustainable Development Manager, said the rampant theft and galamsey activities were a bane to the survival of the mine whilst it also posed a potential loss of investment to the nation. He said the company had instituted a lot of measures to stem the menace that could scare off potential mining investors to the country but not much success has been achieved yet.

Apart from engaging perpetrators in a dialogue, the company is now acting as a facilitator in the government's intervention to identify an area of a rich ore body in surface mining to re-settle the intruders and thereby keep them off their concession.

Mr. Amponsah said these were some of the proactive and humane attempts made by the company as a corporate body to give the illegal miners access to the mining resource of the area as community members. "We could have also brought a heavy military presence to crack down on their activities but we do not want to turn a blind eye on human rights issues, meanwhile our workers also need protection.'' Mr. Ahmed Bashiru, Planning Development Officer, appealed to the government to review laws regarding illegal mining and stealing to come out with stiffer punishment since under the current laws penalties for such offences were not deterrent enough.

Meanwhile, the 30 miners who were trapped in last Thursday disaster have all escaped unscathed and have reunited with their families.

Ghana failed to consult Kenya on Kufuor trip

The African Union (AU) and Ghana failed to consult Kenya before announcing that AU Chairman, Ghana's President John Kufuor would head to Nairobi to mediate between Kenya's violently opposed political factions, a Ghanaian official said Friday.

The foreign ministry official, who asked not to be identified, confirmed that Kufuor's trip, which had been planned as part of a joint AU-Commonwealth mediation attempt, had been cancelled.

"Government and the AU didn't first consult the Kenyan authorities before announcing the president's trip, so now if they say it's an internal matter, what else can we do?" but cancel, he said.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and at the right time an AU delegation will go there," he added.

He declined to elaborate on what would constitute the "right time" and said Kufuor might or might not be part of this later AU delegation.

The Ghanaian government's official explanation for the cancellation of Kufuor's trip was that he is staying at home to deal with inter-ethnic strife in northern Ghana which left four people dead at New Year.

A Commonwealth spokesman said Thursday that Kufuor's trip was off.

Kufuor had been proposed as a mediator by British Prime Minister Gordon Brown together with Sierra Leone's former president Ahmed Tejan Kabbah.

The two were to have led mediation efforts between freshly re-elected Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki and his opposition challenger Raila Odinga, who alleges rigging in the tally. Serious political and tribal violence erupted and has claimed 355 lives since the December 27 poll.

Kabbah, who was already in the Kenyan capital heading the Commonwealth's election observation mission, left on Thursday, spelling the doom of the AU-Commonwealth mediation.

Kibaki and his aides gave the mediation proposal a less than warm welcome, arguing that they remained open to dialogue but stressing that Kenya was not at war and needed no mediators, though US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer arrived Friday and South African Nobel Peace laureate Desmond Tutu undertook a private initiative.

Kibaki's camp took umbrage at the fact that the AU and Commonwealth mediators appeared to be chosen by London, whose relations with the former colony have recently been frosty.

Agona Swedru, Jan 4, GNA - Mr Robert Alex Adokoh, Assemblyman for Adukrom Electoral Area, has expressed concern about the refusal of the Agona District Directorate of Ghana Education Service (GES) to post teachers to the Adukrom Junior High School.

Mr Adokoh, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday, said the future of 45 forms one and two students were in jeopardy. "It is only when you have a collective front that the Ministry would be able to assist in putting your problems across to government," She said. Hajia Mahama advised PLWHAs to take the Anti-Retroviral drugs and seek medical attention to enable them to become healthy. "You should do a little job to support and take care of yourself. Do not see yourself as a dejected person because if you do that you would be stigmatised. Nobody is better than you so let your creator take control of your life," she advised.

She said PLWHAs in areas like Ofankor, Kasoa and Ada were part of the beneficiaries of this year's presentation.

Miss Linda Akyaa Mensah, a PLWHA and Head of the Human Compassion Foundation, a non-governmental organisation committed to the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS said stigmatisation against PLWHAs has gone down drastically due to high level of educational campaigns and testimonies against the spread of the disease. She said the Ofankor-based foundation is made up of 185 members who generate income through making beads and weaving baskets to support their livelihoods.

Miss Mensah was grateful to the Fevers Unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for crediting Anti-Retroviral drugs to PLWHAs.

...THE VALUE IS THE SAME...?!

Inadequate circulation of coins

Koforidua, Jan. 3, GNA- The inadequate supply of the New Ghana Pesewas has brought about changes in the prices some items, which cost less than five pesewas, especially polythene bags.

The commodity, which was sold for 300 hundred cedis in the old currency, is now being sold for five Ghana pesewas because of the shortage of the one pesewa coins.

Others have also taken undue advantage of the situation to make business by adding a small size of the polythene bag to the big ones for five Ghana pesewas to make up for the change of two Ghana pesewas. At both the Juaben Serwa and the Zongo markets in the New Juaben Municipality on Thursday, the situation was the same posing problems for traders and buyers as well.

Oranges, which used to sell at 700 hundred cedis in the old currency was now being sold for five Ghana cedis because of the difficulty in getting the one pesewa coins.

One of the market women the GNA spoke to, said they had resorted to that action to forestall confusion between them and customers and appealed to the Bank of Ghana to release more of the new Ghana coins especially the small denominations into the system.

Another commodity that has been affected by the change of currency is eggs, which used to be sold for 1,300 is now going for GH=A21.5, whiles some Tro-tro fares have been reduced by two pesewas to avoid having problems with the passengers.

New Year School to examine tertiary education

Accra, Jan. 3, GNA - The 59th New Year School opens on Friday, January 4, to critically examine how well tertiary education could be made to respond to challenges of national development. The school, an annual event organised by the Institute of Adult Education (IAE) of the University of Ghana, is on the theme: "Tertiary Education and National Development" and would bring together participants from all over the country to deliberate and come out with valuable suggestions to reposition tertiary education. Their suggestions would also inform policy makers to prescribe strategies that would make it a focal point in the effective transformation of the country into a middle income level by the year 2015.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Ishmael Wilson Parry, Director of the New Year School, said due to the social demand for higher education, the Institute saw the need to throw a searchlight on Ghana's tertiary education system to find out the crucial role it had played in national development.

He said the establishment of the country's six public universities and a myriad of private universities, polytechnics, teacher and nursing training colleges and distance learning centres was not only to provide the skills necessary for the labour market but also the training that was essential to develop the capacity and analytical skills that drove the national economy.

Mr Parry said the IAE was founded in 1948 as the Department of Extra-Mural Studies and had been engaged in University based adult education throughout the country ever since.

He said among its duties was to service the community, which included training for adult literacy work, public lectures and residential schools such as the New Year and the Easter schools. This year's school ends on January 10.

Tema records 22,333 births, 2,158 deaths last year

Tema, Jan. 3, GNA - The Tema Municipal Registry of Births and Deaths recorded a total of 22,333 births and 2,158 deaths between January and November last year.

The 11-month record of 2007 shows an increase in birth registration as compared to the 18,713 registrations recorded in the whole of 2006. Out of the 22,333 births registered, 5,381 were recorded in the first quarter, 5,252 in the second quarter, 7,647 in the third quarter and a total of 4,053 in October and November.

Madam Hannah Twumasi-Ankrah, Tema Municipal Birth and Death Director, who made the records available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the total of 2,158 deaths registered during the period showed a slight decrease compared to the 2,233 deaths recorded in 2006. Madam Twumasi-Ankrah gave the break down of the total deaths as 629 in the first quarter, 537 in the second quarter, 590 in the third quarter and 402 in October and November. She cautioned against double registration and asked parents to memorize some important information on the birth certificate and also make copies available to their wards.

"Information such as the district of registration, the entry number and date of registration is needed for the retrieval of other information from the Births and Deaths Registry for the issuance of a copy of the original certificate when it gets lost or torn", she explained.

Madam Twumasi-Ankrah, said about 85 percent of Ghanaians had lost their birth certificates while majority could not provide any information for the issuance of a duplicate and do not remember the important information needed for the issuance of a duplicate leading to re-registration.

She urged parents to educate their children on the information on their birth certificates from age eight and make copies available to them for keep from 12 years as this would encourage them to cultivate the habit of document keeping and also learn the importance of birth registration.

Madam Twumasi-Ankrah further encouraged parents not to delay the registration of their children's birth as waiting too long might cost them some vital information needed.

She entreated them to visit the registry in the district in which they gave birth before relocating to another district or region and advised against demanding written notes from officials of the registry to be presented to school authorities for admission of the children in school in the absence of birth certificates. To encourage more people to register the birth of their children, she said her outfit during the year had embarked on public education and house-to-house registration.

Takrowase establishes Education Endowment fund

Takrowase (E/R), Jan. 3, GNA - An Educational Endowment Fund to cater for the education of students of Takrowase in the Kwaebibirem District of the Eastern Region has been launched. Launching the Fund, Barima Owusu Nketia, chief of Takrowase, said education was the golden key that opened the doors to the advancement of any society.

He said he was determined to ensure that brilliant students whose parents lacked the means to support their educational advancement were taken care of by the Fund. The Takrowasehene decried the low level of education in the town and promised that any student who would aspire would be given every encouragement and support to attain the highest possible level. Professor S K B Asante, an International Consultant, noted that education had never been more important to the future of Ghana's development than it was today. He described education as the very engine of growth, development and the progress of the nation. Prof. Asante, a Council Member of the National African Peer Review Mechanism Governing Council, said all sectors of national life revolved around education.

"Education makes the individuals not only independent and productive, but also, more importantly, relevant to the collective self-reliant and self-sustaining development of their societies". He observed that the ultimate goal of education, particularly in the globalizing world of the 21st century was self-reliance and self-sustaining development both at the national and individual levels. They constituted the two fundamental concepts that should guide at all times "our development efforts and strategies on our tortuous road to middle income economic status". He added that all the fine talk about "positive change" and "golden age of business, which had preoccupied the attention of the President would be mere slogans if it was not geared towards the strategy of self-reliance and self sustaining development. The District Director of Education, Mr Jonathan Akakpo, commended Nana Takrowasehene for his initiative and called on citizens of Takrowase, and friends of the town and well wishers to contribute generously to make the fund to realize its objective. Dr Kofi Asare, Ashanti Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, asked the youth, especially those of the area to take education seriously.

He called on fathers not to leave the burden of children's education on mothers and advised mothers also not to be buying cloth for every funeral at the expense of their children's education. Mr Basil Ahiable, Contracting and Procurement Operations Manager of Shell Oil Company for West and Central Africa, urged the people to unite and not to allow partisan politics to divide them. He advised the youth of Takrowase, a diamond mining town, not to engage in diamond mining at the expense of their education if they were to have a brighter future. An appeal for funds yielded GH=A23,400 (34 million cedis).

Fighting starts once again in Bawku

...despite presence of Military personnel

Bawku (U/E), Jan. 2, GNA - Fresh violence erupted in Bawku at about 12 noon on Wednesday in spite of the presence of the Military, who are patrolling the Township in armoured vehicles.

Some residents told Ghana News Agency (GNA) that apart from the five deaths recorded at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital, seven more died on Tuesday but their bodies were not taken to the Hospital. They said two people were killed at the New Station; three at Natinga, near the Hospital and two others died near the Water and Sewerage Office.

Mr Alhassan Samari, Upper East Regional Minister, told newsmen on Tuesday after he had toured the affected areas in the Municipality to assess the situation, that 15 people have so far been arrested. He said they have been charged for possessing unlicensed weapons, causing damage to a police vehicle and blocking of roads and said they were in Police custody pending further investigation.

Mr Samari said 165 police personnel were deployed and 150 more would be added on Wednesday. Also a number of Military personnel from the Tamale Air Borne Force would be added to the 70 soldiers already on the ground.

He indicated that checkpoints would be mounted at vantage points in the Region, particularly in the Bawku area. There is a long standing chieftaincy dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups in Bawku, a thriving commercial centre, creating a volatile condition.

Violence erupted on Monday during the celebration of the Samanpiid Festival of the chiefs and people of Kusasi Traditional Area, when news came in that some people had been killed.

Speaking to the Media at Bawku, Chief Superintendent Peter Kin Gyinae, Divisional Police Commander of Bawku, explained that the three people, who were allegedly shot on Monday could not be associated with communal violence between the two factions.

He said criminals suspected to be Fulanis took advantage of the Samanpid festival being celebrated to create confusion, with the intention of stealing cattle and in the process killed the three people thereby sparking off violence.

He said that, when the case was reported, he quickly dispatched police personnel to Pusum near Bawku where the incident took place. Two of the deceased were lying on the ground whilst the other was dumped in donkey cart.

The Divisional Crime Officer Isaac Akligbe led newsmen to the Presbyterian Bawku Hospital mortuary where the three bodies had been deposited pending autopsy.

According to Reverend Jacob Wandumsi, Chaplin of the Hospital, the deceased were pronounced dead on arrival at the Hospital.

Latest From Bawku ....Residents Flee Homes

The communal conflict stricken and fear-gripped residents of Bawku Municipality and its environs have started fleeing their homes for fear of being victimized as a result of communal conflict in the area. At least four people have lost their lives in the conflict. Mourning of the dead started peacefully this morning until indiscriminate gun shorts were heard at Sabongari, a suburb of the Bawku municipality. Speaking to northernghana.com, some residents appealed to government to urgently re-enforce the security in the area so as to forestall further deaths.

The relative calm in the township and its environs, after exchange of fire between Kusasis and Mamprusis that ushered the area into the new year on January 1, 2008, is yet to be consolidated. The timely intervention of a joint police-military operation halted what could have escalated the reported death toll. Apart form the reported death, Stores, kiosks, cars and other vehicles have been burnt among other properties worth millions of Ghana cedis.

The Upper East regional Security Committee (REGSEG) has met leaders of both factions to allow normalcy to reign after which dusk to dawn curfew has been imposed on Bawku and its environs as a measure to maintain sanity in the area. Though security agencies are still investigating the actual cause of the conflict reports gathered by northernghana.com showed that the conflict has been simmering for years now and a minor misunderstanding at a cultural festival triggered the deadly conflict which resulted in death of four people.

Hon. Alhassan Samari, the Upper East Regional Minister and REGSEC Charmian has called for re-enforcement of security from the Northern, Ashanti and Volta regions, while appealing to the conscience of the people to let peace reign in the area.

Northerngahana.com's investigations in the area showed that until the main cause of the conflict and not just the immediate cause is nibbed in the bud the forthcoming general elections is likely to serve as a fertile ground for recurring of the Bawku conflict and the consequences could be even more catastrophic. There is therefore the need for government and the security agencies to effectively handle the situation and flash out all small arms and light weapons that are reported to be hoarded by both sides of the ethnic groups in Bawku and its environs.

Calm returns to Bawku before curfew

Bawku, (UE), Jan. 2, GNA-Firing of arms in the Bawku Municipality stopped at about 1630 hours on Wednesday and the entire place remained calm, allowing people who had been enclosed in their houses to venture onto the streets.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bawku, Supt. Peter King Gyinae, Municipal Commander of Police said the shooting that started earlier in the day was curtailed by intensive patrols by the police and army and that had helped calm down the situation.

"We are not leaving any stone unturned and we would intensify our patrols tomorrow to ensure that no fighting takes place", he said. Supt. Gyinae said more Police and Military personnel had been deployed in the area and they were enough to maintain peace, adding, "the people are now feeling our impact and that would make them keep their guns away".

He said so far 22 people had been arrested and put in police custody in Bawku.

Mr. Alhassan Samari, Upper East Regional Minster, reiterated his call for calm and appealed to the fighting factions to put down their arms and let peace prevail.

" This fighting and killing each other will not help us , we need peace to be able to work for development of our Region as we are among the poorest and have a lot to do to catch up with the other Regions", he said.

He noted that, it was rather an unfortunate incident that nobody expected, as many people were happy to end the year 2007 in good health and looked forward to having a better life in 2008.

Earlier in the day, Mr.Samari visited the 15 people who sustained gunshot injuries and were admitted to the Bolgatanga Central hospital. Two were in critical conditions and needed intensive care, while the others were in stable conditions.

Mixed changes in fuel prices

Users of petroleum products have been ushered into the New Year with upward adjustments in the prices of two main products, namely, premium petrol and premix.

The new prices took effect from yesterday January 1, 2008.

However, the prices of three other major petroleum products declined marginally.

Premium petrol, the most used product on the market, is up to GHp102.70 per litre, from GHp101.99 per litre, while premix petrol, subsidised by the government for fishermen, also shot up slightly from GHp70.12 per litre to GHp7069 per litre.

From GHp102.63 per litre, gas oil (diesel) now sells at GHp101.90 per litre.

The prices, which were released by the National Petroleum Authority, also saw Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) moving downwards from GHp106.14 per kilogramme to GHp105.28 per kilogramme.

The last price review of petroleum products took effect from December 16, 2007, reflecting a downward movement in the prices of crude oil on the world market.

Meanwhile, crude oil prices of near $100 per barrel caused alarm in consuming countries in 2007 and analysts forecast another tense crude market this year with triple-figure records a real prospect.

Despite a murky outlook for the world economy, crude prices are seen settling at elevated levels, spelling more pain for consumers and a steady flow of petrodollars from the world’s oil exporters.

From a low point of just below $50 per barrel in January 2007, prices doubled during the year, hitting $99.29 a barrel on November 21, an all-time record.

In spite of the fluctuating prices, which still remain above the $95 mark, the government has rule out the possibility of hedging, which could see it negotiate at a price with producers to save it from buying at a higher price in the future.

Election08: CPP calls for vigilance & justice

Accra, January 2, GNA - The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) on Wednesday appealed to all political parties to abide by the electoral rules of vigilance, justice and fair play in Elections 2008. "We must not be taken in by those who pay lip-service to the electoral process, we must watch out carefully for anti-electoral behaviour, whether it takes the form of outright deception or sabotage," Mr James Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr., CPP National Youth Organizer stated in a statement in Accra.

The statement tagged; "The Youth League of CPP's New Year message," tasked the Youth to rise-up and demonstrate their loyalty and patriotism for the service of mother Ghana and Africa, stressing that they had vital roles to play for the reconstruction and development of the nation and the continent.

He noted that the future of the nation demanded that the youth fashioned their lives with a distinct objective; "to love Ghana and make her great and proud at all times in all things.

"To work towards the attainment of a nation that will be the happiest place for every Ghanaian. Of brainpower, talent and energy, the good Lord has endowed you, what is required for which we must press for is the State's responsibility to provide opportunity and affordable capital for all."

Mr Bomfeh said the CPP acknowledged that Ghana was passing through an important and exciting phase in the nation's history not only in deepening the democratic credentials, but also in the struggle for economic freedom devoid of any political and social interference. On the CPP's preparation towards winning Election 2008, Mr. Bomfeh noted that the party considered winning the Presidential and majority parliamentary seats as a greater challenge for the party, but noted that the new executives are capable of leading the party to attain that and liberate the nation once again.

He said the CPP also view the role of political stakeholders, including the Government, Electoral Commission, various political parties and the donor community in general as vital to ensure that the general elections were free, fair and transparent.

"This calls for stronger, good character, great moral courage, humility, hardworking, polite, responsiveness, reliability and honesty from the rank and file of the great CPP especially the youth," Mr Bomfeh stated.

The Youth Organiser urged the youth wing of the party to appreciate the magnitude of task ahead for total victory in the general elections. "As a revolutionary people, with a revolutionary party, working at a revolutionary tempo and with faith in the revolution, we can move mountains. But that requires great discipline, determination and strict adherence to the core values of our great Party.

"It is never easy to determine in a party like ours that has been through tribulations since 1966, burdened with the remnants of reactionary indoctrinations and contradictions, how many secret enemies and hidden agents are operating from our midst.

"We are better off if we can trust one another rather than live in an atmosphere of mutual suspicion. Yet unless we exercise the utmost vigilance and mete out the heaviest punishment for treachery and indiscipline our revolution is always in danger of being undermined.

"Go forward and march together, in unity and strength, as one people, with one destiny, in one nation. In all things remember that our great Party - the Convention Peoples' Party - stand behind as the bulwark of your endeavours," Mr Bomfeh stated.

The violence that has erupted in Kenya following the election of President Mwai Kibaki to a second term has claimed at least another 50 lives after a mob torched a church that was sheltering Kenyans looking to escape the chaos.
Shortly after Kibaki won a controversial vote over opposition leader Raila Odinga protesters took to the streets in Nairobi and surrounding cities, setting fires and overturning cars, demanding justice for what they called a fraudulent election.

Since Sunday’s announcement that Kibaki won the country’s closest election ever more than 260 people have died and countless have been injured. Many of those killed have come at the hands of police and military who have been said to have the authority to use as much force as necessary to quell the crowds.

Tuesday’s church fire did not involve the police but rather an angry mob who targeted the building in Eldoret, about 185 miles from Nairobi.
The violence thus far may only be a sign of what’s to come as Odinga has already called on more than one million protesters to march on Thursday. That march has been outlawed by Kibaki but Odinga has said it will proceed.

Tamale beggars showered in old currency

Tamale, Jan. 1, GNA- Beggars in the Tamale Metropolis had a "day out" on December 31, (deadline for the withdrawal of the old currency) when residents gave out alms in large sums in the old currency to them. They told the GNA that it was a gold mine for them.

Some of the beggars were also trading the new currency for the old one on profit basis, which was earning them extra money due to the fact that some people felt reluctant to send monies to the Banks for exchange.

Speaking in separate interviews with the GNA in various begging points in the Tamale Metropolis, they said they have recorded high sums of alms these last few days of the year though it ceases to be legal tender after 31st December 2007.

Surprisingly, some of the beggars were quick to say that they would go to the Banks to change for the new ones while others say they would keep a few as "museum" pieces for the next generation.

One of the beggars who gave his name only as Abu standing at the traffic light opposite Barclays Bank said he got 330 thousand cedis (GH=A233) as at 1030 hours when the GNA interviewed him.

He said the highest money he ever got as a beggar was 70 thousand cedis (GH=A27), saying, "I know that at the close of day I would get more than what I have now if people are still dashing out the old currency."

Asked what he would use it for, he retorted "Don't I listen to news? The Banks would not discriminate against us. I know that those who have no patience to queue at the Banks are those dashing out the old money."

Another beggar in front of the Inter City STC yard got 170 thousand cedis (GH=A217) as 1100 hours as at the time the GNA interacted with him, while another, a female beggar, stationed around the main Taxi rank said she received a large amount of the old coins from a philanthropist and was yet to count it.

Others who spoke to the GNA had money between 30 thousand cedis and 55 thousand cedis with some of them receiving smaller amounts of the new currency, but conceded that the dashes this few days had been good and unprecedented.

Retailers and buyers in Wa haggle over old cedis

WA, Jan. 1, GNA- Several traders in the Wa Municipality had a very hectic time on Monday convincing customers to accept the old cedis, a day before the deadline for its withdrawal comes into effect. A visit to the business centre and some shops by the Ghana News Agency showed that while some shopkeepers were accepting the old cedis, customers especially those from the villages were refusing to accept it as change.

Most of those interviewed appeared not to be aware that the old currency could be changed for the new Ghana cedis at the Banks after the deadline and no explanation would let them change their minds. Mr Mahamudu Darimani, a shopkeeper noted that although the exercise had been a huge success the inadequate supply of the coins was creating the problem.

"I have only the old currency to give to customers as change because when I went to the bank to change them I was told that they were too busy so I should come after the New Year holiday". "I went to another bank and they said they did not have the new coins", Mr Darimani said.

Other shopkeepers who refused to accept the old currency in their transactions said they had already changed all old cedis in their possession and would not accept it again, adding that they do not have time to go back to the bank to queue to change the old currency. However, in the bigger departmental shops and super markets in Wa, transactions in both the old and new Ghana cedis was going on briskly and smoothly with traders of perishable items in the central market also doing the same.
