Source: Daily Graphic Ghana - A social worker has been remanded in police custody by the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly breaking into the house of his benefactor and stealing his two Apple Ipads valued at Gh¢5,400 at Ashongman near Accra.
The accused person, Zakaria Debe, is also alleged to have assaulted the house help of the benefactor by hitting her head against a wall in the process of the robbery.

Debe pleaded not guilty to three counts of robbery, causing unlawful damage and causing harm when he appeared in court last Wednesday.

The court, presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandoh, adjourned the case to May 3, 2017.

The Prosecutor, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Duuti Tuaruka, informed the court that Debe was the founder of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) that focused on orphans while the victim was a legal practitioner, who provided support to Debe and his NGO.

On April 4, 2017 Debe, the prosecutor explained, went to his benefactor’s house and requested for a GH¢700 loan to enable him pay his rent, but the benefactor, could only assist him with GH¢300.

Mr Tuaruka added that on April 12, 2017, Debe visited the house of the benefactor again where he found only the house help washing clothes.

“Debe told the house help that her employer had asked him to make some estimates in the house. Debe then stood aside and started counting cement blocks packed on the compound while the house help continued with the washing of the clothes.

“While the house help was rinsing the clothes to dry them, Debe suddenly rushed on her, held her neck tightly and hit her head against a wall which made her unconscious,’’ he said.

After the attack on the house help, Debe took a pick axe and broke into the house to steal the two Ipads valued at Gh¢5,400.

Luck, however, eluded Debe when in his attempt to scale over the wall of the house, someone saw him and raised an alarm leading to his arrest by some residents of the community who later handed him over to the police.
