EC declares partial result from 229 constituencies

Accra, Dec. 30, GNA - The Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan on Tuesday declared results in 229 out of 230 constituencies that gave Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) the lead.

However, he told a press conference that, because of the closeness of the results, voting will take place at Tain Constituency on Friday, January 2, 2008 before he would declare the winner of the 2008 presidential election runoff.

According to the results from the 229 constituencies, Prof. Mills won 50.13 per cent of the votes or 4,501,466, while Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party won 49.87 per cent or 4,478,411.

Dr Afari-Gyan said he and the political parties had met all day to iron out some difficulties. He said the NDC raised serious concerns about the voting and results in "some constituencies in the Ashanti Region and provided evidence since the name of the game is evidence".

He said the NPP also raised concerns about results in some Volta Region but said they would provide the evidence later. "In view of the closeness of the results, we have decided to give out the results in 229 out of the 230 constituencies."

First round results from Tain are: Nana Akufo-Addo had 14,935 votes, while Evans Atta Mills had 16,211 votes. PNC had 165; DFP had 137; CPP had 141; RPD had 53 and the independent party had 231 votes.

Tain constituency Results at 11 am, 03.01.2009

The Electoral Commission announced that it couldn't declare a winner yet for the run-off.

The EC mentioned provisional results of 4501466 votes (50.13 %) for Atta Mills (NDC) and 4478411 votes for Akufo-Addo (NPP). In view of disputed results in various constituencies this difference is too small to declare a winner according to the EC.
The EC will make a new announcement on Friday the 2nd of January.
With regards to the Tain constituency in the Brong Ahafo Region, the EC said that no elections were held in this constituency because of late arrival of electoral materials. On the 2nd of January there will be runoff election

NPP provides free buses to boost fortunes

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is offering to bus free-of-charge, its supporters living in Accra but who have to vote in other parts of the country during the December 28, 2008 runoff.

An advertiser’s announcement in the dailies is calling on all such supporters to “note that free transport arrangements have been made for them as follows:

“Comfortable Buses will leave Accra on Saturday 27th December, 2008 at 11.00am to Kumasi, Obuasi, Takoradi, Cape Coast, Agona Swedru, Berekum, Sunyani, Wenchi, Nkawkaw, Koforidua and Akyem Oda, and will pick them at designated points on Sunday, 28th December 2008 at 4.00pm to bring them back to Accra (Free of Charge).

“Supporters should however submit their Voters ID Card or any other proof of eligibility to vote. Please come along with all Party faithful in their numbers to make this impending N.P.P Victory a grand one.

“Please note that the Buses will converge at Kwame Nkrumah Circle Round-About.

“Ghana is moving forward so don't be left behind.”

The NPP’s opponents, the National Democratic Congress, are yet to make any such elaborate sponsorship of its supporters, but it is practice endorsed by the two sides to galvanize their supporters to vote.
