Communications Director for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, has debunked claims that flagbearer of the party, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo, will be naming his running mate at today’s Council of Elders meeting.
Speculations had been rife that the NPP flagbearer will be presenting his choice of partners him in 2012 to the Council of Elders of the party for their acceptance or rejection.
Three candidates are in pole position for that enviable spot, but Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who has been at the fore front of the pack is the most favoured option. The other contenders are Deputy Minority Leader Ambrose Dery and Alhaji M. N. D Jawula.
Indications are that the flagbearer might go in for Dr. Bawumia, who was a former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, though the grapevine has it that Bawumia is not the favourite of some top echelons of the party who prefer Alhaji Jawula.
This is because, Alhaji Jawula appeals to the “Zongo community” due to his football background.
Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ Morning Show, the NPPs Communications Director was emphatic that Nana Akufo Addo will not be unveiling his running mate today. According to him, he will rather be informing the Council of Elder of his plans for the election, campaign as well as when he will be naming his running mate. | How Kufour Was Used In $2.5 Million Gold Scam * Source: The Herald

He mentioned Mr. Paul Afoko as present during the meeting with the ex-president, where he was asked to donate a mouthwatering US$30, 000 to the recently launched Kufuor Foundation, owned by Mr. Kufuor.
Other details picked up by The Herald, reveals a certain David Lamptey, who on the day after Mr Shafiq met Mr. Kufuor went to the K-San Law Firm with a police dispatch rider to fetch the lawyer from his Adabraka office on claim that they had an important meeting with Vice-President John Mahama, at the Castle.
Juanah, whose real name is Charles Owusu Ansah, has also been walking the corridors of power claiming to be an Oil Expert , is said to be noted for sweet talks and namedropping to convince his victims of his connections to people in high places; lawyers, judges, top police officers and politicians.
According to Mr. Shafiq, during his November, 2011 visit to Ghana, “Charles invited me to visit former president, John Kufour at his residence. Charles wanted me to meet every important politician and individuals in Ghana including the sitting President, Vice-President, national security advisor of Ghana”.
“He told me that he is the exclusive adviser and attorney of Mr. John Kufour and to former president’s close associates including Mr. Paul Afoko, the former president’s chief of staff among others.
“He further advised me that he has done legal work for the sitting president in the past and continues to do his legal work and he has access to the president all the time.
“When Charles and I arrived at the residence of Mr. John Kufour, I saw Mr. Paul Afoko sitting with Mr. Kufour” “Charles advised Mr. Kufour about my activities in Ghana, specifically investment of USD five millions in purchase of gold and expansions of business in the mining sector.
“Charles suggested I donate USD 30,000/ to Mr. Kufour’s charity foundation, which I agreed and told Mr. Kufour my intentions for donating in charity to his foundation. Mr. Kufour was very kind and encouraged me to invest in Ghana. “Our meeting lasted about twenty minutes, as Mr. Kufour had to travel to another town in Ghana.
“Charles and I, dropped off Paul at the airport, as Paul was his way to London for meeting with gold buyers. Paul told me he might have some gold to sell but will discuss after his return from London.
“Paul and I have been in touch, but no business transaction has taken place and we have not sent USD 30,000/ mentioned above as account details were not sent to me by Charles as was promised.
“Later, Charles and I arrived at his law office and met the sellers of gold, OLD NANA (Nana Adjei) and Small Nana. Charles had informed them that I just met Mr. Kufour.
“Charles further told them that he will take me to meet the sitting president soon. This was the day agreement was reached for the gold transaction and they received USD One millions in advance.
“I met Mr. Kufour again at Abuja, Nigeria on the advice of Paul. “Mr. Kufour was then visiting Abuja. This was after the fraud had been committed against us.
“Mr. Kufour was very sympathetic to my situation and called Paul to assist me to handle this matter”. Meanwhile, the Financial Division of the Accra High Court has remanded in custody the Chief Executive Officer of K-San Law firm, Charles Owusu Juanah, and an agronomist, Victor Amoah, on charges of conspiracy and money laundering.
They are being held by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) for fraud and money laundering activities. They are to reappear before the court presided over by Mr. Justice Bright Mensah, on Thursday, January 19, 2012.
They have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and aiding and abetting money laundering activities.
The bank managers of the Guaranty Trust Bank (GT Bank) at its Abeka and headquarters branches, as well as the Industrial Area Branch Manager of the SG-SSB Bank and the Chief Executive of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), are to report to the EOCO on tomorrow to assist in the investigations.
Another person, identified as Nana Kwaku Adjei, who posed as a gold dealer in the fraudulent transactions, is currently being sought to assist in investigations.
Juanah, the principal architect, is said to have collected the US$2.5 million from the GT Bank headquarters at about 9:45 p.m. on November 17, 2011, to his Abeka office in a sack.
Details are that the two accused persons lured a Dubai-based businessman and his agents into the country to establish business dealings in gold. They were made to pay the US$2.5 million before the gold, which had been lodged in a vault at the SG-SSB Bank, was released to them..
Juanah, at about 9:45 p.m. on November 17, 2011, went to the Abeka branch of the GT Bank to pick the money to an office located at Adabraka.
Mr. Shafiq and his agents later verify the authenticity of the gold when it had been delivered, and a huge portion of it turned out to be fake.
When Mr. Shafiq and his agents wanted to lodge a complaint with the police, they were warned by Juanah not to as they would be arrested by the police for transacting an illegal business. They left the country for Dubai but lodged a complaint with the National Security, which referred the matter to EOCO.
When Juanah was picked up, two passports; one British and one Ghanaian, with two different dates of birth were seized from him.
Investigations have so far revealed that Juanah drafted the contract agreement for the transactions, acted as solicitor to both the buyer and the seller, while Victor Amoah, a friend of Juanah’s, acted as consultant to Mr. Shafiq and his agents.
| Okudzeto Ablakwa's Sister Arrested In America
* Source: Daily Guide
Mercy Ablakwa, the younger sister of Deputy Minister of Information Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has been arrested in the United States of America (USA) for forgery.
Mercy, who is 22-years-old, is currently facing criminal prosecution. Documents available to the Daily Guide newspaper indicate that Mercy, a student of Charleston University in West Virginia, was arrested on October 7, 2011 in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, and was subsequently charged for the offence of Forgery-Uttering under section 943.38 of the statutes of the State of Wisconsin.
A criminal case was filed against Mercy in court on October 9, 2011, two days after her arrest, where the charge of forgery-uttering was preferred against her.
Daily guide gathered that the charge of forgery-uttering is classified as Felony under the laws of Wisconsin and that a guilty verdict could see Mercy receiving a fine of up to $10,000 or an imprisonment of up to 6 years or both.
Checks by the paper have also established that Mercy Ablakwa got admission into Charleston University in West Virginia in the immediate aftermath of the assumption of office of the Mills/Mahama-led NDC administration and is still a student in the University.
Mercy, who turns 23 this year, has the same mother as the Deputy Minister but the two have different fathers. Though attempts to reach Samuel Okudzeto-Ablakws for his comments proved unsuccessful since he failed to answer his phone, sources said he is well aware of his sister’s arrest as he was put in the know hours after she was busted.
He is said to have expressed concern that it may dent his image as a government official, especially considering the fact that he is contesting the North Tongu constituency primaries of the NDC. Our sources around the Ministry of Information and friends of the Deputy Minister indicate that Mr. Ablakwa is conscious of the fact that this case could be a huge arsenal for his opponents in the race, including the sitting Member of Parliament, Charles Hodogbey, who has been fighting him for the party’s parliamentary ticket for the area.
It is alleged that since travelling to the United States, Mercy Ablakwa has maintained a close relationship with her brother, the Deputy Minister, who was said to have facilitated the trip. Daily Guide’s sources in Wisconsin said top lawyers in the state are defending the sister of the deputy minister.
Mercy is scheduled to reappear in court on February 1, 2012. | Nine-month-old baby burns to death at Dansoman * Source: Citifmonline
A nine-month-old baby boy has been burnt to death this Tuesday afternoon after he was trapped in a room that caught fire at Dansoman in Accra, close to the Mr. Biggs Fast Food Joint.
The brother of the deceased, 6, who was with him during the fire outbreak, however, managed to escape unhurt. The exact cause of the fire is immediately unknown.
“We spoke to one of the residents who said the lights went off and it came back on after 30 minutes, but it seems there were certain [electrical] appliances still on,” Lawrence Allotey, the Dansoman fire station officer, who was at the scene, told Citi News. “That must have started the fire. ”
He said the baby was already singed to death before they arrived at the scene to control the fire.
Mr. Allotey said his outfit is investigating the exact cause of the fire outbreak. | DSP Tehoda Charged With Abetment...And Stealing Of Cocaine * Source: Peacefm

DSP Tehoda was said to be in tears when she was led out of the court room to prison custody.
The BNI indicted deputy chief of the Commercial Crimes Unit of the Police CID in the cocaine swap saga in their interim report.
DSP Tehoda has been in BNI custody since December 29, 2011 and was released on bail last Friday, but that freedom was curtailed moments later after the BNI re-arrested her again. | AFAG demands arrest of NDC gang of four, Woyome * Source: Joyonline
Pressure group Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) is calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of a financier of the National Democratic Congress Alfred Woyome over the controversial judgement debt the latter received.
The group is also demanding for the prosecution of top four government officials whose actions it claims led to a willful financial loss to the state.
AFAG cited Chief of Staff Martey Newman, Education Minister Betty Mould Iddrisu, Deputy Attorney General Ebo Barton Oduro and Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor for negligence in the scandal that led to the payment of ¢58 million to Woyome.
A spokesperson to the group, Abu Ramadan told Joy News’ Jefferson Sackey that the actions and inaction of the four top government officials amounted to a willful cause of financial loss to the state.
He averred the state has no legitimate contract with Woyome for him to be awarded such an amount, insisting, any person linked to such payment must be brought to book.
Abu Ramadan also called for the state to increase security for the Attorney General Martin Amidu who has vowed to retrieve the ¢58 million paid to Woyome.
In a reaction, a deputy Information Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa said “no Ghanaian is off the hook” on the issue relating to the Woyome judgement debt.
He said the EOCO will use its powers it could muster under the law, including powers of arrest and an option to go to court, to ensure that due investigation is done and the truth unveiled.
He said John Mills’ presidency will ensure that the state resources are duly protected and urged all interested groups to be patient as due process is being followed. | Failed STX deal: Govt falls on Shelter Afrique on housing project *Source: Daily Graphic
The government has begun talks with Shelter Afrique, the largest housing development support organisation in Africa, as part of its efforts at securing alternative funding for the botched STX housing project.
A delegation from Shelter Afrique, led by its Chief Executive, Mr Alhassane Ba, held a meeting with President John Evans Atta Mills at the Castle in Accra yesterday to inform him of the organisation’s investment plans for Ghana.
Established in 1982, Shelter Afrique operates to mobilise financial and technical resources for funding housing development in Africa.
It aims at remaining a leading strategic partner for the efficient delivery of real estate and other related services in Africa through collaborative partnerships with all actors in the shelter delivery process.
Ghana is the third largest shareholder in Shelter Afrique with its 8. 4 per cent shares, and the pan-African organisation plans to invest about $100 million in its initial plan for housing development in Ghana.
The government believes partnering Shelter Afrique will yield immense dividends in its quest to build affordable houses for Ghanaian workers.
Fears among a section of the public that the STX housing project will be a fiasco were allayed when the President gave an indication that the government was looking for alternative sources of funding to bring the project on stream.
President Mills said the government’s decision to join Shelter Afrique last year was informed by the critical role the organisation was playing in the development of the housing sector on the continent.
He said the government remained committed to addressing the housing deficit in Ghana, indicating that more housing units were needed to shelter hundreds of Ghanaians.
Underscoring the seriousness of the project to Ghana, President Mills remarked, “Anyone who shows interest in helping to beef up our housing stock is someone we have to sit and talk with. ”
He gave an assurance that the government would take the partnership with the 30-year-old organisation very seriously, since “there is something positive to come out from it”.
Mr Ba, in his remarks, lauded the government for joining the organisation, which has 43 member countries.
“From now on, we recognise we have a duty to help Ghana implement its housing policy,” he said.
As part of its support plan for Ghana, the organisation, which works under the auspices of the African Development Bank, said it planned to operate in Ghana by way of a four-pronged approach.
The approach, Mr Ba said, included undertaking a public-private sector partnership and partnering public finance institutions such as the pension fund to build affordable houses for workers.
Additionally, he said Shelter Afrique had plans to assist private developers to build more affordable houses and also help improve the availability of financial resources for housing projects.
“We are ready to co-operate with the government to make a big difference in the housing sector in Ghana,” he said
To demonstrate its commitment to Ghana, the organisation has already granted a loan of $5 million to a single private Ghanaian company to undertake a housing project in Ghana.
At a media encounter in Accra last week, President Mills acknowledged that the STX housing project was beset with legal problems and boardroom wranglings which made it difficult for the project to commence as expected. |
