AMA Taskforce Team Assaults Trader

* Source: Peace FM online

Yaw Sekyere, a 30 year old mobile phone dealer at the Orion Cinema near Circle was brutally assaulted by a member of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Taskforce Team in the wee hours of Monday.

Narrating the incident to peacefmonline, Yaw Sekyere stated that the AMA taskforce demanded 10 Ghana cedis from him as a usual “fee” paid by all traders around the Orion Cinema.

Due to the fact that it was very early in the morning, he told them he had no money on him at that time since he had not made any sales yet.

According to him, the Taskforce still insisted on him paying the required “dues” especially since most of his other colleagues (traders) have paid.

He said when the taskforce team realized that he was not willing to pay the “dues”, they scattered his merchandise (stock of mobile phones worth nearly GH C4,000) and took some of his goods away leaving onlookers to steal the rest which had been strewn on the pavement.

Yaw Sekyere’s attempt to stop the AMA taskforce resulted in him being set upon with sticks and being hit with a shovel on the head by a member of the team.

The victim, who rushed to the offices of Peace FM drenched in blood, said he had reported the incident to the Police at the Neoplan Station and was given a police report to seek medical attention.

Ghana opens with big mismatch against Botswana

FRANCEVILLE, Gabon -Four-time African Cup of Nations champion Ghana is an overwhelming favorite to beat first-timer Botswana in the opening round of matches in Group D on Tuesday, even if the country's vice president is worried about an upset.

John Dramani Mahama warned Ghana's players at their training camp in Gabon that they should avoid complacency against underdog Botswana, which also will be weakened by injury on its debut.

Ghana has to do without suspended defender Isaac Vorsah in Franceville, but the inexperienced Botswana squad will seriously miss forward Joel Mogorosi, who broke his arm at training last week just before the team traveled to the tournament.

Injury problems were also mounting for Mali coach Alain Giresse before the Eagles face Guinea in the second match at Stade de Franceville on Tuesday, with doubts over Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita and striker Cheick Diabate.

"We will do whatever it takes to get the best performance,'' said Giresse, who had already been forced to alter his plans after Toulouse defender Mohamed Fofana and midfielder Kalilou Traore were withdrawn from Mali's squad with injury.

Even without Vorsah, Ghana is expected to still be too good for a Botswana team that surprised many by qualifying for its first African Cup. The Black Stars were visited at training on Sunday by Mahama, Ghana's football association said, with the team attempting to end a 30-year title drought at the African Cup.

"Every country came to this tournament on merit so you should avoid complacency,'' Mahama told the players.

Ghana said every squad member apart from Vorsah was available for its opening game, including striker Asamoah Gyan, who had been in a race to recover from a hamstring injury in time for the start of the tournament.

Coach Goran Stevanovic may still choose to rest Gyan against Botswana, however, with brothers Andre and Jordan Ayew of Marseille and Prince Tagoe all capable of filling in up front and Ghana probably facing tougher tests later against Mali and Guinea.

After Senegal fell to Zambia in its opening game and Ivory Coast was pushed hard by Sudan, the tournament has already seen strong performances from underdogs following a qualifying competition that produced a string of upset results. Botswana may be at its first major competition but it also qualified ahead of former champion Tunisia and Togo, while Ghana is under pressure to deliver a long-awaited success.

"The expectation is high and we know it won't be easy but we're hopeful and believe we can win it,'' Ghana captain John Mensah said. Seydou's absence against Guinea after reported knee and ankle problems would be a blow to Mali's hopes of making a strong start and challenging Ghana as Group D's top team.

The experienced midfielder is to guide a new generation of Mali players at the tournament in the absence of former stars like striker Frederic Kanoute and midfielders Mahamadou Diarra and Mohamed Sissoko, who no longer play international football.

"It's not an easy group, it's a difficult group,'' Giresse said. "(But) we want the best. We want the maximum.''

The renovated stadium in Franceville, in the south east corner of Gabon, will be the fourth and final venue to feature at this year's African Cup of Nations.

NDC Members Demonstrate Against Kufuor And NPP Ex-Ministers

* Source: Citifmonline

A group known as the “Concerned NDC Members” on Tuesday demonstrated in Accra against past New Patriotic Party (NPP) government officials over their refusal to cooperate with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

The demonstration started at the Obra Spot at the Nkrumah Circle through the Adabraka Police Station towards Accra Central and ended at the OSU Castle.

The group earlier appealed to the government to compel ex-ministers of the NPP administration to appear before the EOCO to account for their roles in the payment of the judgment debt to Mr. Alfred Agbesi Woyome.

Speaking to Citi News, Robert Kpeteme, Secretary to the Concerned NDC Members said the demonstration was meant to compel former President J. A Kufuor, Mr. Yaw Osafo Maafo and Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey to cooperate with the EOCO.

“We want the President to invite the 2005/2006 cabinet members those who were involved in the transaction of the Woyome saga to go to the EOCO and testify,” he said.

“We want the truth to come out and if they know they have nothing to hide they should go and testify so that at least whatever questions EOCO has for them at the end of the day the truth will come; there are issues like people getting food on their tables and sanitation that need to be addressed than the everyday Woyome saga. ”.

***** Volta cries out to Nana

The people of Volta Region, the “World Bank” of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have cried out to the 2012 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to save them from the hardship been unleashed on them by the NDC government led by Prof. Atta Mills for the past three years.

Narrating their story, they said since the NDC took office after the 2008 general elections, all the promise they were given by the NDC has never see the light of the day but rather their lives has been like hell in the region which was known has the NDC stronghold.
They confess that both ex-Presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor governments did well than what they are experiencing now with Prof. Mills government.
All these came to notice when the NPP flagbearer took his third face of his listening tour to the region.

The tour took Nana Addo to Ho, Sokode, Kpeve, Have, Hohoe and their surrounding areas and in all these towns the people trooped to the streets to meet him and could not hide their sentiments about the bitterness and frustrations they face in the Mills government.
At Anyinawase, an elder of the community, Fo Divine, said "we will no longer put all our eggs in one basket. We are happy that Nana has come here today and we want to assure him that the child who shows respect to his father is shown back same."

At Kpeve, the poeple told Nana Addo that they have been deceived by the NDC.
"All the promises they made to us have not been fulfilled and we are fed up with them," said Davi Esi.

The jubilant youth who were drumming and singing victory songs for Nana Addo noted that, they will not allow themselves to be used by the NDC for their political gains and later dumped them to survive on their own while those who used them enjoy the booties.
They said "we the youth in the Volta region will no longer allow ourselves to be fooled. We worked hard for the NDC to make sure Prof. Mills won the elections but he has since forgotten us. We will not repeat the mistake of the past."

They assured Nana Addo that, they will go round the villages and tell their people to ignore the lies and propaganda of the NDC and rather vote for the one whose party brought us developmental projects.

The third face of the tour also took Nana to Buem, Jasikan, Biakoye, Worawora, Nkonya and Vakpo where similar sentiments and concerns were brought to his attention.
He also paid visits to the Jasikan College of Education, Bueman SHS and Worawora SHS where he reminded the students of his commitment to provide free Senior High School education for the youth and people of Ghana..

10-man Ghana holds on to win 1-0 against Botswana

* Source: -

FRANCEVILLE, Gabon — Ghana captain John Mensah scored before being sent off on Tuesday as the title contender surrendered its early superiority in a nervous 1-0 win over lowly Botswana at the African Cup of Nations.

Mensah forced the ball in from a corner in the 25th minute to cap a dominant first half for the four-time winners at a half-empty Stade de Franceville.

But Mensah was shown a straight red card in the 66th after dragging down Jerome Ramatlhakwane on the edge of the area, forcing Ghana to hold on in a game it was expected to win with ease.

Botswana had threatened a stunning upset when only a desperate goal-line clearance from John Boye earlier in the second half prevented Moemedi Moatlhaping's header from equalizing.

Rot at ECG: The big names behind the staggering debt

* Source: New Crusading Guide

Ongoing investigation into the activities of the State owned Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has brought to the fore a long list of companies and individuals owing.

Companies were indebted to the ECG so much that one wondered why the artisans – corn miller, tailor and hairdresser – who owe some GH¢ 20 or less have to suffer power disconnection.

Since The Promo of the investigation started airing on the Countries major media networks, debtors are currently rushing to the ECG to settle their bills The figures we bumped into upon entry into the countrywide ECG system pointed to the fact that, the ECG would without any doubt, be a profitable state institution if the company was proactive in her debt collection measures. If ECG vigorously pursued some of their grave Special Load Tariff (SLT) defaulters, they would most likely be moderate in the amount of adjustments that they seek from the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) during their quarterly reviews. The could redefine their debt collection methods.

SLT customers are entities whose power load exceeds a certain threshold for which reason ECG gives them special meters known as Current Transformer (CT) meters. Aside SLTs, there is also the case of private homes and small businesses who have piled up their electricity debts and are in no hurry to settle these debts. Monies owed the ECG by SLTs and individuals from our investigations, if collected would make the outfit financially independent and sustainable to a large extent.

We bring you figures of debtors as at NOVEMBER 2011, all those disputing the figures can check with the ECG, some may have settled all or some of their debts by now, yet; others may be piling more, that certainly would be unacceptable in every respect. We have figures from all ECG operational regions but our defaulters spotlight shall be on five key ECG areas, ACCRA EAST, ACCRA WEST, TEMA, WESTERN AND ASHANTI WEST REGIONS. At the end of our strenuous analysis of the horrible figures, we realized that over thousand private companies and state enterprises owed the ECG in excess of some GH¢ 460 million, monies running into trillions of old cedis going down the drain as a result of the non collection by the company.

SO WHO AND WHO OWE THE ECG? From what we gathered on the field, TIGER EYE brings to the fore the list of companies and state institutions that have used power but failed to pay for the resource. For purposes of easy grasp of what clearly is an interesting list of ECG debtors, we categorize them under the following:

The high ranking hospitality outfits Top shots within corporate Ghana High-flying members of financial institutions The eminent telecommunication companies The grocery establishments and of course The State Enterprises and then The indebted academic institutions

We would also bring you the list of patriotic entities; here are a group of companies who have made it their duty unlike the defaulters to settle their bills and by so doing aid the efforts of the ECG in improving their service output.

WHO AND WHO OWES THE ECG? The HOSPITALITY DEFAULTERS Members of the hospitality industry owed the ECG in all five regions under the purview of our analysis; here they owed the ailing ECG varying amounts that added up to in excess of some GH¢ 1,768,210. 56. From the plush executive suites of that multinational hotel down to the not too expensive local hotel, lodge, inn etc. , a critical utility as electricity was being used without it being paid for. To start us off is the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel. With their ‘Uniquely Golden and Traditionally Ghanaian’ label, they owed power debts of some GH¢ 238,621. 89, Golden Tulip Hotels with all their ‘worldwide hospitality’ tag, had paid up in Accra East, yet owed power bills of (GH¢ 155,078. 85) at their Kumasi City branch in the Ashanti West Region. Still in the region and with the guarantee of ‘a real welcome away from home,’ Miklin Hotel, certainly did not welcome power debts of GH¢ 29,497. 14p.

Shangri La Hotel with its ‘African Experience’ still had power bills of (GH¢ 33,855. 09) yet to be settled. If Kingsby Hotel treated ECG debts (GH¢ 11,667. 16) with the traditional royal touch they promise their patrons, the ailment of the utility provider should be assuaged to a large extent.

‘We are traditionally friendly,’ they say; but Hotel Wangara’s (GH¢ 24,917. 34p) indebtedness was miles from a friendly play with the ECG. Same was the case with Raybow Hotel who owed GH¢ 33,855. 09p, with all their ‘Elegant Luxury,’ tag in the Western Region. Tema’s Premier Hotel; Hotel Majorie ‘Y’ were indebted to the fine tune of (GH¢ 29,024. 57). Coco Beach Hotel joined the list with GH¢ 26,321. 95p as did fellow Tema based outfit, N-Joy Hotel despite promising the best of all worlds were saddled by a debt of GH¢ 26,024. 57p. Still in Tema, Royal Ravico Hotel, failed to put a touch of royalty to their debts by showcasing their unwillingness to pay their mounting power debts that had reached GH¢ 85,091. 62p as at November 2011. ‘Welcome to the premier life’ is tagline for Best Western Premier Hotel but they do not seem to have welcomed ECG debts in excess of (GH¢ 77,842. 24). The very expensive Movenpick Ambassador Hotel with their ‘passionately Swiss’ tagline perhaps forgot to be patriotically Ghanaian with their huge power debt of (GH¢ 577,631. 07). With a GH¢ 212,523. 47 debt, ‘Accra’s Business and Leisure Address,’ Alisa Hotel was in the porridge as was Sanaa Lodge Hotel stationed in ECG’s Accra West region. Other debtors included: GS Hotel (GH¢ 38,083. 70p), Ascension Hotel, East Legon (GH¢54,361. 82p), Calwell Hotel (GH¢ 77,842. 16), Chase Restaurant owed (GH¢ 27,093. 29), and VVIP, which was indebted to the tune of (GH¢ 39,184. 10p) Frankies Ltd. (GH¢ 53,347. 33) and their sumptuous ice cream did not look good as the popular food joint with branches in the capital stood accused as did the Ghana Food Court sinking in debts of (GH¢ 35,185. 60p).

Interestingly all these hotels charge their customers rates in which they embed the power component which customers must settle on entry or before exit of the facility. The FINANCIAL INSTITUTION DEFAULTERS These are institutions that deal with finance and in order to protect money which they lend out, request for collateral before granting loans; yet some of them owed power supply as at November 2011. Outfits in three ECG Regions (Accra East, Accra West and Tema) had yet to settle whooping sums in power debts to the ECG. Grave defaulters who surfaced in all the three regions were ‘The Pan-African Bank,’ Ecobank, whose total power debts added up to (GH¢ 320,275. 56) Societe Generale – Social Security Bank (SG-SSB), would not be left out of the list with (GH¢ 63,601. 00). Leading loans company now turned bank, Unique Trust Financial Services/ UT Bank, promised ‘a loan in 48 hours,’ to their numerous customers but had forgotten to pay debts in one of their two accounts, certainly the GH¢ 30,597. 93 was surely unacceptable.

Providence Insurance defaulted in bill payment to the tune of GHS 20,408. 28. The state owned Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB) seem to be interested in serving its customers better than the ECG with debts of GHS 68,455. 96

As if the lack of bill payment by these banks was not injurious enough, some banks detailed to take electricity payments on behalf of ECG have been holding onto collected monies for as far back as 2008. This situation is causing customers and the ECG unwarranted nuisance, we would expose those banks and finance institutions in subsequent publications; STAY TUNED! TELECOM COMPANY (TELCO) DEFAULTERS The indebtedness of these companies is surprising especially considering the amount of funds that they have and continually pump into pageantry, musical shows and other media related exploits, perhaps in the light of gaining mileage within the populace. Certainly, settling their power debts which are a small fraction of their budgetary allocations for the many entertainment and sports programmes that they sponsor, would be most welcomed by an ECG that is badly in need of money to serve small scale businesses and homes. Ghana Telecom now Vodafone, on analysis were unmatched in their accumulated debt profile, the company owed in all five regions, in some cases in multiple accounts, their total debt stood at GH¢ 886,814. 15p. A breakdown of Vodafone debts are as follows; five accounts in Accra East, GH¢ 593,813. 16p; Ashanti West debt was, GH¢ 111,073. 82p; figures for the Western, Accra West and Tema regions were GH¢ 41,442. 72p, GH¢ 49,078. 55 and GH¢ 41,442. 72p respectively. Whilst Vodafone fails to settle its power bills, they splash cash on a programme like the ‘Vodafone Icons’ as mother Ghana awaits her trapped funds to help the rural poor who hardly know anything about Vodafone’s Icons.

Clearly Vodafone had failed to ‘Get On Board’ ECG’s debt collection train and had failed woefully to apply their infamous tagline; ‘Power to You,’ to their power debts owed ECG and the nation for that matter; an incredible GH¢ 886,514. 15. We hope it would be ECG’s time very soon to receive payment. Next to follow Vodafone is the yellow MTN battalion. With an estimated 10 million customers, MTN looked to have concerned themselves more with making the next million customers rather than paying for the power on which their machines were running. They were grave defaulters in three regions, Accra West, Kumasi West and in Tema. With GH¢ 115,998. 29p owed in Accra West, GH¢ 161,839. 89p in Kumasi West; and a fine Tema debt standing firmly at GH¢ 71,973. 01, the ‘Everywhere You Go’ team overall debts added up to some GH¢ 349,811. 19. Although yet to launch their operations in the country, Ghana’s sixth and last telecom network, Africa’s fastest growing network; GLO communications, and their ‘Rule Your World’ tagline, came third in this category, with an ECG debt of GH¢ 176,293. 96p in their account in the Accra West region. Kasapa (Now Expresso) had two accounts in Accra East and Accra West totaling GH¢ 98,213. 64p yet they tasked us to ‘Dare to Dream’. Their debts however fades into the background when it’s compared with that of Millicom Ghana, operators of the Tigo ‘Express Yourself’ platoon whose account debt in Accra West read as follows: GH¢ 154,562. 00. Zain (now Airtel) had paid up their power bills in other regions but had forgotten to settle one account in Ashanti West, GH¢ 63,232. 48. For these companies, what mattered was the battle for supremacy relative to who had more subscribers, programmes, events, promotions and TV commercials. With all that media blitz, ECG was the last entity they endeavored to consider. How can we build a country like this? If we all decide to contribute our quota by paying our taxes and bills, the poverty in mother Ghana would be minimized.

GROCERY DEFAULTERS/CORPORATE GHANA The infamous Max Mart Stores still had debts yet to be cleared in one of their two accounts; the figure to be paid being GH¢ 47,832. 74. Yet this same Max Mart stores had put up a car as reward for a sale promotion.

Shoprite with (GH¢ 52,577. 20) is ahead of Max Mart at the ECG. ‘Where Ghana shops,’ Melcom Ghana Ltd, owed ECG in Ashanti West GH¢ 13,941. 73 Depending on where you are coming from, they are at the entry or exit of the buzzing Osu Oxford street, they pride themselves as an outlet that is ‘catering for the needs of Ghanaians and expatriates. Koala Shopping Mall also owed some GH¢ 63,301. 80p

Here, we present you with perhaps the juiciest component of the debtors’ brigade. In here is a mixed bag of some key corporate defaulters owing the ECG, the candidates herein are mind boggling, interesting and funny if you like. The infamous Opeibea House owed GH¢ 24,117. 76, their neighbours with their unique architectural design, Silver Star Towers were also indebted to the ECG to the tune of GH¢77,940. 04. Completing the maze if you will, is the Premier Towers with mounting debts of GH¢ 218,865. 47. Did their name; Millennium Heights delude them into thinking that they could hold onto their GH¢ 31,434. 93 debt for 1000 years? Mind you, all these office space renters take huge cash sums from the many corporate institutions that operate from their outfit yet they did not see it prudent to set aside the power component for payment to ECG despite the fact that businesses in such buildings would come to a halt without electricity. Ghandour Cosmetics, who pride themselves as the leading cosmetic manufacturers would not lead the crusade to pay ECG debts of GH¢ 162,670. 82; ‘We Print’ says Camelot Ghana, beyond printing they forgot to pay debts of some GH¢ 21,713. 01. Teletech Ghana owed electricity arrears of GH¢ 45,801. 61.

POLY PRINT had not paid-up for power of GH¢ 171,698. 82 they used to produce their quality products, a similar story was observed of POLYGROUP, which was indebted to the tune of GH¢ 139,403. 51. Even the most popular POLY named company; POLYTANK Ghana Limited was owing 151,637. 06.

Latex Foam Annex could afford its patrons ‘partnership for life’ yet they would not partner ECG in debt payment (GH¢ 26,168. 75) for life.

Multinational giants, LEVER Brothers were ready to ‘create a better future daily’ for its many customers but failed woefully to pay ECG a whooping GH¢ 908,599. 34 in ever growing trapped power cash. Super Paper Products Company (SPPC) was in there with GH¢ 534,868. 05 Other companies who owed were: Air Liquide whose debtors account read GH¢ 120,272. 74; Patrons of Lifestyle Gallery paid for their stylish furniture but the outfit failed to pay ECG GH¢ 19,780. 60 of accumulated bills. Vienna City – an entertainment hub/ GH¢ 44,435. 14 as did Ikam Printing who perhaps forgot that ECG did not print currency but needed their GH¢ 30,990. 51 Reroy Cables (GH¢ 83,121. 11); these and many others owed ECG and had fallen foul of their responsibility to settle power debts. They all stand accused in ECG’s court of indebted companies. Drug manufacturing giants; Ernest Chemist/GH¢ 58,874. 38, Dampong Pharmacy owed GH¢ 14,824. 4 and were giving ECG bitter pills to swallow by their defaulting status. Importers of frozen poultry and meat products; Servister, were also inside the soup with GH¢ 88, 832. 43. The swanky Institute of Physicians and Surgeonss near the Ridge roundabout was indebted to the tune of GH¢ 208,266. 73. Syntex Plastic Factory admit in their tagline ‘We are regularly selling’ but as per their power debts of GH¢ 103,702. 89p; we contend they are not regularly paying. In debt as well is Ckeckpoint Ghana/ GH¢ 88,608. 38; Osu Entertainment Center and E Process International owed GH¢ 20,972. 62 and GH¢ 125,010. 84 in that order. Venue for all the big state conferences and the several musical shows owed the ECG a whooping amount of money. Our amazement though is whether the place can be rented on credit; a whole Accra International Conference Center (AICC) owed GH¢ 491,769. 78. With their ‘Tradition of fine catering,’ Airways Catering owed GH¢ 108,806. 29, whiles seeking to promote ‘Empowered Lives, resilient nation,’ did the United Nations Development Programme forget to pay their bill? We ask because they owed GH¢ 181,477. 49 The instance of multiple accounts was a prominent feature especially in Tema, as a result of the heavy industrial nature of the place and the Western Region, which was home to several wood processing companies and mines. In the Western region, John Bittar Company with 5 accounts had defaulted to the tune of GH¢ 2,436,640. 24, but were upstaged by Chiranno Goldmines whose twin accounts had given birth to GH¢ 5,228,524. 90. Noble Gold Bibiani did not exhibit any nobility with debts in excess of GH¢ 1,571,140. 32. Do you know what this money can do for places like Bimbilla, Bole and Chorkor? Everpure Water, producers of bottled mineral water had yet to settle the ECG to the tune of some GH¢ 15,111. 48; same was the case with the Bulk Oil Supply GH¢75,686. 11. There are several other companies whose names and debts as a November 2011, would be publish in subsequent publications. The Battor Catholic Church GH¢ 111,015,00 and another spiritual and Winners Chapel followed suit with GH¢ 13,293. 67 ACADEMIC DEFAULTERS It’s quite interesting that public universities for all the monies that they charge students in lieu of facility user fees; which has electricity bills incorporated into them, owed the ECG big time. Perhaps in living up to their ‘Premier University’ tag, Legon scored first class and wore the academic debtors gown with an outstanding debt of GH¢ 4,388,500. 63. University of Science and Technology, try as they did, lagged behind the frontrunner with a second class upper of GH¢ 2,981,228. 93. Then came the University of Cape Coast who were too busy learning and forgot to settle GH¢ 1,871,566. 40. Accra Polytechnic showed why the HND certificate was worthy on the job market. GH¢ 1,116,958. 78 was certainly a strong showing. The school stationed on Greenhill, near Legon, a. k. a. the Ghana Institute of Management and Professional Administration (GIMPA) were indebted in two accounts adding up to GH¢ 146,707. 44.

The Tarkwa School of Mines, dug deep down the earth and came up with two accounts which totaled GH¢ 339,646. 10p. The University of Education, Winneba also owed ECG some GH¢ 240,776. 42. The remaining institutions were; Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) - GH¢ 231,032. 01p, Presbyterian Boys Senior High School - GH¢ 165,976. 26, Kumasi Technical Institute - GH¢ 102,044. 06. The Pentecost University College for all the fees they charged students still had power debt to settle (GH¢ 46,533. 37), SOS College owed GH¢ 27,929. 36 INDUSTRIAL DEFAULTERS Relative to the industrial defaulters; majority of who were stationed in Tema and the Western region, we collated as many as 91 entities some with having as many as five accounts who owed the ECG, the gross sum of GH¢ 21,388,686. 52. We would definitely be dropping names in due course.

STATE INSTITUTION DEFAULTERS That State Institutions who were in debt relative to power used, came as a bit of a jolt especially so against the news item sometime last year, when the vice president, John Dramani Mahama, advised all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to change from post-paid to pre-paid meters. The veep’s position was met with different reactions and we are left wondering as at today what has become of it. The defaulters among MDAs are so many and juicy a register that we would bring the top 10 entities owing in power debts then take the lid off as many of them as we can later on. Top 10 State defaulters: Kpong Water Works GH¢ 12,749,926. 53 37 Military Hospital GH¢ 1,456,538. 40 GWCL Rooster Station GH¢ 1,407,983. 56 Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital GH¢ 1,316,365. 31 Tema Oil Refinery GH¢ 1,192,367. 00 Office of the President GH¢ 675,805. 55 State House, Parliament GH¢ 635,781. 31 Ghana Water GH¢ 617,105. 51 Ghana Manganese Company GH¢ 553,929. 48 Police Headquarters GH¢ 393,736. 65 So just 10 defaulting State Institutions out of hundred others owed their fellow ECG An unbelievable sum of GH¢ 20,999,539. 30 equivalent to US$ 14,000,000. The list of Ministries owing huge amounts with their ever heaping power debts, were as follows: Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning GH¢ 524,924. 67 Ministry of Works and Housing GH¢ 70,839. 59 Ministry of Trade and Industry GH¢ 116,610. 58 Ministry of Defense GH¢ 8,814,284. 28 Ministry of Education GH¢ 214,685. 33 Ministry of Transport GH¢ 112,666. 88 We shall release the list for other Ministries in due course. We are aware of the clearing house module through which some state institutions pay their power debts. The question however is; for a country that is demanding much from ECG, on which grounds could their monies be held and for how long?

Other interesting defaulters on a regional basis were: In Accra East, Pantang Hospital owed, flanked by the Ghana Standards Board, the National Identification Authority, the Forestry Commission, Ghana Trade Fair Company, and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority. In came the Elwak Military Barracks, the National Theatre and National Institute of Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) who refused to be left out. Guess our last three candidates; VAT Service, Police Hospital and the Controller and Accountant General’s Department. ACCRA WEST: Here, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) wore the crown as lead defaulters with multiple accounts that added up to; GH¢ 657,225. 61p. SSNIT House, Trust Tower, Ridge Tower, Office Shopping and their Archives Department were all in the soup. Making an appearance in Accra West were; the Cocoa Marketing Board, State Publishing and State Insurance Corporation. Showing their solidarity was the Ghana Rubber Company and the Environmental Protection Agency. TEMA Here the very tall list included Juapong Textiles, Regional Maritime and PSC Tema Shipyard amongst several others who made the cut as did the Tema Municipal Assembly. WESTERN REGION State Institution defaulters included the likes of the Ghana Bauxite Company and the Ghana Railway Corporation. Others included the Air force Senior Mess, the Ghana Manganese Company, the Ghana Rubber Estates Limited; twin accounts of the Ghana Water Company and of course the Sekondi Fishing Harbour. The case of KUMASI WEST saw half of their four candidates place in the top 10 State Institution defaulters; GWCL Rooster Station and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, the Ghana Cocoa Board and Kumasi Abbatoir rounded up the roll call.

What is irritating is the deliberate misuse of power by most officials of these institutions. Workers do not put off their air conditioners; shops around such government institutions tap power for free etc. Indeed, some private businesses and individuals tap power from MDAs, ALL at the expense of the tax payer.

THE PATRIOTIC ENTITIES Although those who owed were in their thousands, the list of loyal partners of the ECG could not escape us during our analysis on entry into the nationwide ECG SLT system.

Nestle Ghana Limited, extended their Good Food, Good Life Policy to the ECG by paying their electricity bills whilst Ghacem Gh. Ltd, the nation builder made sure they were indeed building the nation by paying their electricity bills. Ghana International School (GIS), showed that they understand the inner working of not only their students, but also the ECG. They pay their bills and on time as well.

Intravenous Infusions Ltd, are not only producing pharmaceutical products to better the health of Ghanaians, but also paying their ECG bills to help in the development of the nation. Big Brother; Daily Graphic are indeed ahead of the pack, their ECG bills are paid on time. Praise must be given where it is due, whereas Novotel Kumasi owes the ECG a huge amount of money, Novotel Accra has been good to the state by paying all their bills.

Guinness Ghana Ltd. shows it has indeed got the power to pipe their rich dark Guinness by paying their ECG bills. The leading brewery in Ghana, Accra Brewery, exhibited their clear leadership by making sure they do not owe the ECG a penny. Fanmilk is not only so nice, nice nice in taste, it is also so nice to the ECG. It has settled its bills. The Cocoa Research Institute had also paid up. Palm Development Company Ltd also proved that they are not only concerned about the development of palm, but also of the ECG. ‘Your business is our business’ says the National Investment Bank and they are true to this. The business of ECG is theirs, so they have paid up. The Cape Coasters, Ameen Sangari Ltd, realizes that the power they use for their production activity is not free, so they settle their ECG bills on time.

Perhaps, other Public Institutions can take a leaf from the page of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), who have fulfilled their duty to their fellow state institution, ECG, by paying all their bills.

To these entities and others who pay their bills on time to help the ECG to march onto greater heights, we say AYEKOO! !!

WE CALL ON THOSE WHO HAVE BILLING ERRORS TO GO TO THE ECG HEADQUARTERS TO RECTIFY THOSE ERRORS SINCE THEY STILL EXIST ON THE DATABASE AS DEFAULTERS. Re-Entry into ECG System – Tema in Focus Considering that Tema recorded the highest number of defaulters by our defaulters analysis, TIGER EYE, five months down the line (June 2011), reentered the ECG system to ascertain whether these companies were making any efforts to lessen their debts. We realized to our dismay that most companies sat by as their debts kept rising, this was the case even when Government was giving them some subsidies on their power consumption. Entities we tracked on our reentry were predominantly Steel, petroleum and the Manufacturing companies. So even in the light of subsidized power, companies still defaulted and ECG still sat by as more of the people’s power kept going waste. CLOSED/FINALIZED ACCOUNTS A closed account is a technical terminology that denotes meters that are supposed to be taken out of the ECG system as a result of heaped debts that remains unpaid by the particular entity. The ECG is then expected to take legal action against those companies as a last resort to recouping the used but unpaid power debts.

But more often than not we realized that most of such meters supposedly off the ECG system were still active and entities and individuals were still using such meters without paying a dime to the state.

Closed accounts have on their own also contributed a significant chunk of revenue loss on the part of ECG; there are institutions across board (i. e. all five regions under the purview of our investigations) who still had sums to settle in closed accounts. We found hundreds of accounts owed the ECG varying sums in closed accounts; meaning the particular entity or individual was no longer using the meter but had also not paid off the debt that was tied to the meters at the time they decided to stop the usage. The breakdown of trapped ECG funds in closed accounts was very worrying and a grave cause for concern.

Companies in this country owe the ECG such huge sums of money and the ECG always trumpets how obsolete their equipments are and why they need tariff adjustment after the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC’s) quarterly review. Clearly the lack of legal pursuance of adamant defaulters leaves a lethal impact on the national coffers, we ask; can any nation develop along such arbitrary lines? Your guess is as good as ours. Why should this be the case; what is the ECG legal team doing in this regard; for how long shall this persist?

There are several other entities who may not have been mentioned, that does not in any way mean that they do not owe. Individuals also owe the ECG and we would stop at nothing to put their names out.

Since the story broke, we are aware of all those companies who have hurried to the ECG to settle their bills. It is an exercise in giving back the ECG its due and then we can also demand of them quality service, efficiency and value for all the monies that we pay to them as bills.

God Bless our homeland Ghana and make our nation great and strong.

In Phase 3 of the President’s Assignment, we walk you through state and private individuals who have decided to help the ECG in its operations when it came to the supply of power.

The ‘Agbogloshie Private ECG Grid’, the ‘Prampram Self Electrification Master’, the infamous ‘Takoradi Air Force Base Military Power Distribution Lord’s, the ‘Accra Mall dollar rate chargers’ and the 1. 6 million debt collection saga amongst other issues, will be uncovered. STAY TUNED! !!.

Man In The Company Of Girlfriend Shot Dead In Kumasi

* Source: Daily Guide

RESIDENTS OF Fante New Town in Kumasi woke from their sleep on Monday morning to the shocking news that a 30-year-old man in the area had been shot dead.

Isaac Frimpong, a handkerchief seller, was reportedly shot dead by some unknown gangsters around 1:00am on Monday.

The deceased, a popular person in the area, was in the company of his girlfriend when the hoodlums shot him from behind. So far conflicting reports have emerged with regard to how the gangsters killed Frimpong.

Some reports suggested that the killers might have been robbers who were on a robbery spree in the area at the time of the incident. Others also noted that the perpetrators of the heinous act might have been some gangsters residing at Yelewa in Kumasi.

Daily Guide gathered that one Razak of Yelewa was lynched by some unknown persons at Fante New Town about one week ago, during a brawl. The Yelewa residents then threatened a reprisal attack in a brutal fashion by killing eight people at Fante New Town.

And since no group had so far claimed responsibility for the bloody act, people were speculating that perhaps the Yelewa residents were carrying out their threat.

The Assemblyman for the area, Umaru Ilyass Djagana aka Morrison, confirmed the news to Daily Guide in a chat. He noted that it was too early to say what might have influenced the runaway gangsters to carry out the dastardly act.

According to him, he was in his house when he received a call around 1:30am about the shooting to death of Frimpong. The Assemblyman then rushed to the scene and later on reported the matter to the police.

Morrison said sources at the scene informed him that Frimpong and his girlfriend were walking home when they met the hoodlums. Sensing danger, Frimpong shouted at the top of his voice to raise alarm but the gangsters gave him a hot chase.

In the course of the race, the gangsters, whose number was not known, shot him from behind, killing him instantly. Morrison noted that he had received information that the incident might be the result of a revenge attack by a notorious group in Yelewa whose member was killed at Fante New Town recently.

But he was quick to point out that it was too early for people to make concluding remarks with regard to who exactly shot and killed the young man.

32 Atomic Security Personnel Released

* Source: GNA

The 32 security men and two officials of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), who were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly causing unlawful damage to the property of a Chinese construction firm are on bail.

The accused where arrested for destroying the property of Anaina International Company Limited at Kwabenya in the Greater Accra Region.

The Police did not give any reasons for the decision but an official of the GAEC said the Police had suspended the court action until further notice.

The two officials of the Commission who were arrested were Mr Felix Adeku, Head of Administration, and Major Samuel Kuleke (Rtd), Head of security of GAEC. Professor Edward Akaho, Director General of GAEC who was invited by Police has also been granted bail.

Earlier on hundreds of workers of GAEC besieged the Cocoa Affairs Court to show support for their colleagues who were arrested in connection with the demolition of the property of the Chinese company.

The workers some of whom wore red arm bands amidst singing carried placards some of which read: “Ghana Atomic Energy needs protection,” and “release our colleagues now.”

When their detained colleagues were released they hailed them and poured powder on them, signifying victory.

Prof Francis K. Allotey, a board member of GAEC who was at the court to sympathise with the staff and the security men of the Commission said lands at the GAEC was acquired by executive instrument and since that instrument had not been revoked “the lands still belong to the Commission”.

He said the Atomic Energy was an institution and that the arrest and the maltreatment of its staff and workers were not good for the country’s image internationally.

He said the breach of security at GAEC has implications for Ghana, explaining that if a terrorist group gain access to the facility they could create dirty bomb which could cause havoc to the society.

He said it was important that the State should give maximum protection to the Atomic Energy facility.

Prof Allotey also informed the media that the Deputy Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency based in Vienna Austria called to confirm the arrest of the staff as well as the security of the Commission.

This, he said is likely to affect Ghana’s research in Atomic Energy and allied sciences.

We Will Wake Mills Up! Afag Declares*

* Source: AFAG / BY YAW P. K. MANU

WAKE UP!

The date is January 25, 2011. The time is 6.00am, and the venue is the Obra Spot, Circle. The Alliance For Accountable Governance (AFAG) will lead all well-meaning Ghanaians on a massive demonstration through the principal streets of Accra, to protest the gargantuan corruption that has engulfed the Mills-Mahama Administration. The action by the pressure group is to wake President Mills up to deal decisively with his senior corrupt government and party appointees who are ruthlessly looting the nation’s coffers.

The Mills-Mahama Administration since assuming power have been bedevilled with a number of corrupt activities, the latest being the payment of over ¢920 billion to Presidential Aide and Chief financier of the ruling National Democratic Congress, Alfred Agbesi Woyome, as judgement debt, for a non-existent contract.

Briefing this paper on the massive demonstration, Director of Research of AFAG, Davis Opoku said whilst President Mills failed to deliver on any of his 2011 action year promises which includes completion and subsequent admission of students into the Volta and Brong Ahafo Universities, the completion of major road works in the country, and full implementation of one-time premium NHIS among others, the NDC as a party witnessed some brilliant action including the acquisition of 80 plots of land at Oyibi near Accra, for an ideological institute, and the construction of a$20 million ultra-modern office complex with state-of-art gadgets. Several government and Party big wigs also put up gargantuan mansions all over the country with the Deputy Minister of Works and Housing Dr. Hannah Bissiw putting up a twin mansion in her hometown, whist others engaged in open scuffles over contracts on radio. The Minister of Roads and Highways, Joe Gidisu received a brand new BMW 7 series as a gift from a Chinese Road construction company to inspect road projects, whilst the General Secretary of the ruling party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, a.k.a General Mosquito, a board member of the Bui Power Project succeeded in securing a contract to solely supply the project with the most expensive cement blocks.

In all these, President Mills has been loudly quiet in acting, as he continues to sing his chorus of “I’m not aware.” This lackadaisical attitude of President Atta Mills in fighting the canker which has permeated all spheres of government has further emboldened his appointees to rob the nation of its resources with impunity.

Citing the fraudulent payment of the¢92 million to Alfred Woyome, the AFAG leader accused President Mills of fully endorsing the payment which was used to finance the Get Atta Mills Elected (GAME) campaign against Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings. He accused President Mills of veiling his guilt in the matter, behind his supposed God-fearing and “asomdwehene attributes, in the process protecting his appointees who continue to loot the nation’s wealth to the president’s benefit. It will be recalled that after the FONKAR/GAMES a leading member of the NDC Herbert Mensah, announced that he had in his possession a tape which suggested that a whooping ¢90 million was spent to get Atta Mils elected as NDC Flagbearer.

According to Davis Opoku, today’s demonstration is meant to remind President Mills of his social contract with the good people of Ghana when he assumed office. It is meant to prop up the President to live up to his responsibilities of fulfilling his promises and protecting the interest of all Ghanaians. AFAG is also demanding the dismissal of the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Ebo Barton-Oduro for his complacency in the “Woyomegate” scandal, and the arrest and prosecution of Alfred Agbesi Woyome for perpetuating fraud against the people of Ghana. Already the scandal has led to the dismissal of former Attorney General Martin Amidu, for attempting to retrieve the GH¢92 million from Mr. Woyome, whilst Madam Betty Mould Iddrisu, the Minister of State who facilitated the execution of the fraud by Mr. Woyome has resigned her position. The demonstrators are also expected to call for the immediate decrease in fuel prices which was irrationally increased by between 15-30%. This increase took effect after the courts had directed the National Petroleum Agency to scrap illegal charges it had added to the petroleum price build-up; a directive the NPA has failed to comply with.

Key personalities of the various political parties and members of various interest groups like the TUC, GNAT, GUTA and GPRTU will join AFAG in what will today be the first of many demonstrations to wake President Mills and his team up from their slumber.

The demonstration will start from the Obra Spot, circle and move through the Independence Avenue, Ministries, and finally end at the Hearts Park, where leading members of AFAG and other interest groups will address the gathering. Officers of the Ghana Police Service will be available to provide adequate security to what promises to be a peaceful march.

E.T. Mensah Takes Over Education

* Source: Daily Graphic

President J.E.A. Mills has accepted the resignation of Betty Mould-Iddrisu as Education Minister and asked E.T. Mensah, in charge of Employment and Social Welfare Ministry to take up additional responsibilities at the Education Ministry

A press release signed by Koku Anyidoho, Director of Communications at the Presidency said the President thanked Mrs. Mould-Iddrisu for services rendered to the people of Ghana during the period she served in government.

The President also wished her well.

Mr. Enoch Teye Mensah, Minister of Employment and Social Welfare has been assigned additional responsibility to oversee the Education Ministry until further notice. Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu, a former Attorney General and Minister of Justice tendered in her resignation letter at the presidency Monday.

She has been under pressure to resign over her handling of the payment of a judgement debt to Alfred Woyome, while she was Attorney General.

Her resignation comes days after President Mills fired his minister for Justice and Attorney General, Martin Amidu for misconduct.

Mr Amidu was dismissed from office shortly after the president issued an ultimatum for him to prove corrupt allegations against persons in the government or resign.

There has not been any public statements from the Presidency or government spokespersons on the reasons for the resignation.

Betty Mould-Iddrisu was previously the Head of Legal and Constitutional Affairs of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London before she was made Ghana's first ever woman Minister of Justice and Attorney General.

She becomes the second cabinet minister in the present NDC administration to have left the government following closely on the heels of sacked Attorney General, Martin Amidu.

I feel embarrassed and humiliated by Anas’ findings - ECG boss

* Source: Joy FM

The Director of Customer Services at the Electricity Company of Ghana, Dr N. K. Smart Yeboah says he is scandalised, embarrassed and humiliated by the sheer scale of corruption and inefficiencies at the state power distributor.

He said he was even more disturbed by the realisation that both male and female employees of the company are guilty in equal measure of the shameful practice of extorting money from customers.

The Head of Public Relations at the ECG, Mrs Gloria Dua-Sakyi, agreed.

Eight months’ investigations by Crusading Guide reporter Anas Aremeyaw Anas uncovered meter tampering, stealing and selling of meters at exorbitant prices, power diversion, stealing of cables, juicy allowances for ECG Board members (some of who take as much as GHS9,000 a month), closed accounts and company indebtedness to the tune of almost GHS400 million, amongst others.

Dr Yeboah, speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Tuesday, conceded the issues captured in the investigative piece are largely accurate.

The list of companies owing the ECG, he said, “fairly represents” the true situation on the ground but explained that “it’s a dynamic list; it changes.”

As of November ending last year, Dr Yeboah said the ECG was owed GHS384 million – private companies and organizations owed 67 per cent with the government holding the remainder.

According to him, the ECG cannot be faulted much for the situation because with respect to the Ministries, Department and Agencies, it is the responsibility of the government to pay their bills and if for some reason the government is unable to do so, much cannot be done.

As regards the large companies which are owing, Dr Yeboah stressed that ECG has a duty to help businesses stay in business “because our continuous existence depends upon the continued existence of businesses,” and as a result such companies and the MMDAs are given a certain dispensation even when their bills are piling up.

How fair is this arrangement given that domestic consumers do not enjoy such compensations,? he was asked. “That is a difficult question,” he conceded.

Ghana, he said, allows a 42-day credit period for utility consumers but conceded that is exceptionally generous because in a country like Kenya, the credit period is seven days.

The reference to the 42-day credit period almost brought the architect of the investigation, Anas, to his feet. “I don’t have issues with the 42-day rule, it has always been there but when you look at the analysis and the investigations that have been done, we are not talking 42-day rule. These are people who owe consistently; somebody is owing GHS5 million and we are talking about 42-day rule? What are we talking about? At the end of the day, the unfortunate part is that it would be passed onto the consumer to pay for and then we say we are being business friendly. He should tell me in the world where this is practiced.”

He didn’t end there, Anas took on Dr Yeboah on the question of closed accounts insisting: “If it was as nice as Mr Smart Yeboah wants it to look, then we wouldn’t have Closed Accounts. Tell him to tell us about Closed Accounts; companies which have run million of cedis and have closed their companies and have gone home and the debt is on the Ghana Government, is on the tax payer to pay, he should comment about closed accounts. Why do we have closed accounts”? he asked.

“Well if your business has gone out of business obviously the account has to be closed,” Dr Yeboah supplied, but Anas replied, “Yes it went out of business because nobody went for the money, the person found a smart way and went out of that business and formed another one...Tell me the million cedis of debt that has been accrued as a result of closed accounts and what ECG as a company has done; the legal department, what have we done with regard to closed accounts”?

Responding, Dr Yeboah said some companies were being prosecuted.

An unconvinced Anas said if the ECG did due diligence, it would know companies that are capable of settling their bills and will not wait only for companies to consume power, pile up debt and fold up.

Petroleum prices to go up by 30%

* Source: Citifmonline

.Petroleum prices are expected to go up by an average of 30 per cent in the coming weeks.

This follows a court ruling by an Accra High Court on Tuesday refusing an application by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) to reverse an earlier ruling last year that scrapped the ex-refinery differential tax, which was imposed on Ghanaians without Parliamentary approval.

It will be recalled that on 28th November 2011, the court also directed that the accrued surplus since June 2009, which the plaintiffs estimated to be in the region of GHc 661 million, should be deposited into the Consolidated Fund on behalf of Ghanaians.

The plaintiffs in the case were Mr. Kwaku Kwarteng and Mr. Abdul Ganiyu.

Petroleum prices were increased between 15 and 30 per cent about a month ago, much to the objection of several civil society organisations and labour unions including the Trades Union Congress.

The Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Alex Mould, said his outfit does not have a choice but to comply with the court’s directive.

Did Betty Resign Because Of Woyome? - NPP Wants To Know

* Source: Peace FM online

Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akomea, says government must officially explain to Ghanaians the actual reason(s) behind the resignation of the former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice and now Minister of Education, Betty Mould-Iddrisu.

Madam Mould-Iddrisu tendered in her resignation at the presidency late Monday night with some speculating that it might be linked with the Woyome saga.

The former A-G has been under pressure to resign or be shown the exit over her handling of the payment of about GHS58 million to the businessman and financier of the ruling party, Alfred Woyome, while she was Attorney General.

The former A-G stands accused of failing to defend the case brought against the state by Mr. Alfred Woyome resulting in the payment of GH¢58 million judgement debt paid to the NDC financier.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ Morning Show, Nana Akomea said it is incumbent on government to let Ghanaians know whether Betty Mould-Iddrisu’s resignation has anything to do with her role in the controversial Woyome judgment debt payment or the Education Ministry.

“We need to be told to make our satisfaction complete, we need to be told why she has resigned. If it is because of the Woyome issue we need to be told…she is working as the Minister of Education and there is no controversy. The controversy has involved her work at the ministry of justice so if that is the reason why she is resigning we need to be told very clearly…If it is because of Woyome, then it is in the right direction; more so the government needs to confirm it to us to clear doubts…We should know why she has resigned…,” the NPP Communications Director said.

Deputy General Secretary of the NDC in charge of operations, George Lawson has congratulated the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for holding a successful and peaceful primaries over the weekend to elect members of parliament in various constituencies in nine out of the 10 regions of Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on the Big Bite Morning Show on Xfm 95.1, he said that the results of the just ended parliamentary primaries must be respected by all since Œit is the will of the people in the constituencies¹.

Mr. Lawson said in spite of the court injunctions placed on constituencies such as Hohoe North, Œeverything went on smoothly¹.

Reacting to an earlier statement made by the defeated Member of Parliament for the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency, Michael Teye Nyaunu on going independent, Mr. Lawson said it his democratic right to do so if he wants to exercise it.¹

He however said the party was not aware Hon Teye Nyaunu is intending going independent, saying, "he conceded after the elections and congratulated the winner".

?Once he makes it formally known to the NDC, we will call on him and iron out any issues and bring him back to the party¹ he added. George Lawson used the opportunity to caution all party executives to stay neutral as the NDC readies itself to hold primaries in the Greater Accra region on Saturday, 28th January 2012. He also warned aspirants to carry campaigns devoid of intimidation and "make sure we have a free, fair and transparent election like we had in the other nine regions".

Girl dies as lab technician ‘denies’ her blood

* Source: Joy FM online

A 15 year old Junior High School leaver from Gemeni in the Volta Region has met her untimely death at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi, in what appears to be another case of negligence as she was practically denied blood in time by a lab technician.

According to the brother of the deceased, Gideon Gabor, Patience Sakpigi, who is anaemic, died after the lab technician allegedly attempted extorting money from them before issuing out the blood, he allegedly delayed and brought the blood at the eleventh hour.

23 year old Gideon Gabor, a driver residing at Beposo-Dunkwaw in the Shama District of the Western Region, said his sister had come to visit her from Gemeni in the Volta Region only to die under his care after she had complained of headache on Friday night.

He told Maxx News he could not lay the matter to rest, until an appropriate action is taken against the lab technician.

Narrating his ordeal to Maxx News, Mr. Gabor said on their arrival at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital at about 3:30am last Friday, they were asked by the medical doctor to get blood from the blood bank because his sister was anaemic and needed that to stabilize her. They had been referred from the Daboase Hospital.

He said after they had approached the lab technician on three occasions, they were denied the blood until he paid an amount of GH¢60 although that is not the practice.

“When we got to the Blood Bank, the guy there told us that there is no blood. But a nurse told us that there is blood over there so we should beg the guy perhaps he needs something from us. We went back to the place and begged him but he still insisted there is no blood. So we came back to the Doctor again and the doctor wrote in a red pen making the request and also called him on phone but he was still adamant. So when we went there for the third time, he only told us that the blood available is for somebody and that he can only give it out with an initial payment of 40 cedis then after that I will come back and donate the blood back”.

“He even took 60 Ghana cedis with no receipt before he gave us the blood. By then we had wasted almost one hour thirty minutes so when we got there and the blood was put on her, my sister passed out in three minute” he narrated soberly.

Mr. Gabor blames the lab technician for his sister’s death and wants the law to take its course.

“I felt so bad because there was blood. How can people donate blood freely and when someone needs it you tell him the blood belongs to someone. How is it for somebody? Did the person pay for the blood or what” he queried angrily. I will blame the guy at the blood bank because as for the doctor he tried his best. If that man had given us the blood on time, we wouldn’t have lost our sister. I am not leaving this matter to rest. They have given me two weeks to give me feedback after the investigations so I am waiting for the next action” he noted.

The Western Regional Health Directorate has set up an investigative committee to look into the matter. However the Director of Health Service in the Region Dr. Linda Vanotoo has stated that blood is not supposed to be sold.

She however explained that applicants are to pay a processing fee of between 15 to 20 Ghana Cedis for a pint of blood and also make arrangement to replace that blood through a donor.

According to her, in this particular case, only a pint of blood was given out to the patient and it cost 25 Ghana Cedis. It must be noted however that the lab technician charged 60 Ghana Cedis. Dr. Vanotoo says for now one cannot conclude that it was a case of negligence until investigations are concluded.

The Odikro of Gomoa Onyadze in the Gomoa West District of the Central region, Nana Gura IV has banned school children in the area from going to town to watch television after 8:30pm.

Parents, whose children will be spotted in town around that time, will be fined.

Speaking at the annual Akwambo festival celebrated in the area on Saturday, Nana Gura stated that since education is the bedrock of the development of every nation, he will ensure that illiteracy becomes a thing of the past.

He expressed concern about the way some parents send their children to the farms to help them during classes’ hours.

Nana Gura noted that no parent has the right to take his or her school going age child to farm during the period, stressing that his outfit will deal drastically with parents found culpable.

“Although your children have the right to help when the need arises, they can do that during weekends and not during class hours when their friends are busily learning,” he stated.

He said government had introduced many policies such as School Feeding Programme, Capitation Grant, Free Distribution of School Uniforms, among others to boost education.

Nana Gura therefore charged parents to support the education of their wards.

The MP for the area, Francis Arthur disclosed that all the roads in the Gomoa District had been awarded on contract, stressing that by October all the Gomoa roads will be tarred.

Atomic Energy Boss, 30 Others In Police Custody

* Source: Peace FM online

The Executive Director of Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), Prof. Edward Akaho has openly admitted to PeaceFM that he authorized security personnel from the commission to demolish and set fire to property belonging to Anaina International Limited on a disputed piece of land at Dome-Kwabenya.

Anaina is a wholly-owned Ghanaian company but its construction team is led by some Chinese expatriates.

The GAEC and the private company Anainia, are both laying claim to a 164 acre piece of land at Dome-Kwabenya.

The security officials from the GAEC pulled down edifices including warehouses, make-shift housing structures for its construction workers and set fire to vehicles, water reservoir and some construction equipment such as excavators, wheelbarrows and a generator plant amongst others.

So huge was the fireball that personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service in Madina had to be called in to douse the flames.

Anaina intends undertaking a massive project that promises to employ more than 50,000 indigenous Ghanaians. The project, according to its handlers, is for the state-of-the-art International Business District (IBD) and will see to the setting up of offices, businesses and residential apartments, five-star hotel and casinos, supermarkets, departmental stores, recreational facilities and parks, banks, bus stations and a host of other infrastructure on a 700,000 square meter land in the Legon-Atomic enclave area.

Handlers of the project say it would cost not less than US$500million to complete and have thus brought in some Chinese investors to partner them in its execution.

But the project has for some time now stalled following complaints by the commission that the land in question belongs them and have consistently warned that the construction of apartments, hotels or warehouses could pose serious problems for emergency evacuations in event of any nuclear accident or incident.

Prof Akaho said he even personally impressed on the National Security to intervene by pulling down the fence wall of Anaina about two weeks when he realized that they (Anaina) had begun demolished other people's structures along the road indicating that they really meant business.

Matters however came to a head this morning when the GAEC took the law into their own hands and went on a demolishing spree to force them off their encroached property.

“We must exercise control over this land because we want to make sure that people do not build very close to nuclear facilities. Ghana has signed international conventions and if there is any accident we have to do evacuations. We have to protect the public and the environment so we cannot allow any encroachment in any form. I’ve said it many times that it is only a country where people do not respect laws that will allow a foreigner to build hotels, build apartments and shopping mall very close to a nuclear facility.

"This kind of thing can never happen in China. I have not taken the law into my own hands.…What happened was that after the demolition, the Chinese came back again and we did what is mopping up and this is exactly what we have done…we have done an excellent job. I’ve no regrets. And believe me if people come to this land so many times, we shall drive them away because any violation would an embarrassment to this country…If for example they are saying that I’ve no right to exercise control over this land…I’m prepared to resign. I don’t do things just because people have influences anywhere; I do things by my conscience,” the GAEC Boss told the media in front of the Atomic District Police Station.

Moments after the interview, he was whisked away to the police Headquarters together with about 30 workers of the commission.

The Atomic District Police Commander, DSP Afriyie Ameyaw explained that Prof. Akaho has been invited to assist in investigations.

He, however, condemned the act, saying the GAEC should have used the appropriate channel to fight for their right instead of taking the law into their own hands.

NDC Foot Soldier Exposes Party

* Source: Front Page Newspaper

…Overwhelming influx of Togolese, Beninoise to Adeiso tilts the balance

An NDC foot soldier who is highly disappointed with the corruption within the corridors of power has said that even though the rank and file of the party are not too happy with the system of governance of President John Atta Mills, there is no way the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would win power in the constituency. Asked by this paper why he was so emphatic in his assertion, he replied that, there is an overwhelming influx of Togolese and Beninoise to Adeiso and its surrounding villages, most of whom had been registered as Ghanaian voters.

“I am an Ewe and am telling you the truth because you are my friend. My people have been brainwashed, that the NDC is an Ewe party and that a victory for the Akan-dominated NPP is a doom for their deportation from Ghana”, he disclosed.

This NDC foot soldier who warned this paper of strict anonymity further disclosed that these Togolese and Beninoirs have come here with various juju or have acquired some here to make them powerful spiritually.

“I am a Christian, a member of the E.P. Church and therefore loathe these deities. Any attempt to challenge or litigate with them over anything will result in your death. My brother I am not joking, it is a fact”, that was the foot soldier.

According to him these idol worshipers are made to swear on their gods during election time to vote for the NDC and they indeed vote with the fear of reprisal from their gods if they failed to do so.

“My brother, tell the NPP never to bother to put up a parliamentary candidate because that would be an exercise in futility. Here in Adeiso the people will even vote for a cockroach with NDC colours,” he said.

When asked whether it is true that the dreaded Dr. Beckley had taken residence in Adeiso or any of the villages, the NDC foot soldier claimed he has heard of a powerful juju man from Togo who most of his kinsmen are consulting. “I have not seen him myself since am not part of their demonic activities”, he said..

AFAG Warned Nation Wreckers

* Source: Front Page Newspaper

…To hands off or be crushed!

Prior to their demonstration tomorrow Wednesday, Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has sent a warning to those it describes as ‘nation wreckers’ who are also planning to stage counter demonstration to create unwarranted confusion on the day of “Atta Wayo demonstration’ to hands off or be crushed.

According to a release from the quarters of the civil society group, anybody or group of persons who will make an attempt to foment trouble will not have it easy.

AFAG continued that, it source within the ruling government has picked signals that some unscrupulous persons sympathetic to Mr. Alfred Woyome, the renowned National Democratic Congress(NDC) financier and beneficiary of a whooping sum of GHC928 million (928 Billion Cedis) of the tax payers’ money are feverishly organizing and arming themselves to cause trouble.

“This we see clearly as a grand machination by the powers that be to derail the focus of AFAG from throwing more light on the corrupt deeds of the NDC government,” it stated.
The statement continued that, as a group AFAG will not concede to any pressure to stop its demonstration as it is within the right of every Ghanaian to hit the streets and protest against any injustice and corruption. “We want to state in unequivocal terms that, AFAG is fully prepared for the occasion and will as a result not hesitate to smoke out, deal ruthlessly with and crush to ashes any imposter who sets out to foment trouble in their midst.”
It assured all the genuine demonstrators of their safety and security through its internal security measure to complement that of the Ghana Police Service since it has complied with the Public Order Act.

The civil society group has also invited all other groups to join in the demonstration. These are the TUC, GPRTU, PROTOA, Petty Traders Association, Dress Makers Association, Fisher Folks, Student Bodies and all Labour Unions gravely affected by the gross mismanagement and ‘killer’ policies of the Mills-Mahama government to pour out in their numbers to demonstrate that ultimate power reside with the masses and not the privileged few in government..

Kufour Endorses Lawlessness In Ghana

* Source: TCCL

... as he supports Osafo Maafo, O.B. Amoah & others for refusing EOCO invitation.

TCCL News Desk Report

Once again, the ex-President of Ghana, Mr. John Diawuo Kufour, has amply exposed his evil character he is made of before the whole world, following his unfortunate comment about the African Cup of Nations (CAN) 2008 judgment debt in an interview he granted to the media recently.

Speaking to a section of the media in Accra, Mr. Kufour, who had abruptly terminated the of contract headed by Alfred Agbesi Woyome, resulting in the financial loss of ¢580.00 to the state, was extremely excited that his former Ministers, who have been implicated by the scandal, have refused to cooperate with the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), which is investigating the issue. Speaking in Twi language, he said, “It is very disturbing. For such an amount to be paid from the consolidated fund, it is like our systems are not working. Where did that money come from?” He continued, “These are the people who said there was no money in the national coffers when they came into office. Attorney General (A-G) is suspect of the matter. EOCO is a subset of A-G, which is the first suspect in this case, so why should they honour invitation from EOCO?”

Clearly, former President Kufour has supported the destructive position Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, the torch bearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), has always wished that the country would be ungovernable this year when the electoral fortunes are not favourable to him.

The NPP flag bearer on his campaign tour of the country called for bloodshed (all-die-be die) by charging the NPP youth to adopt confrontational approach in this year elections. In his reaction to Mr. Kufour’s call for anarchy in the country on an Accra-based radio station, Asempa fm on Friday, Dr. Tony Aidoo, the Head of Policy Monitoring and Evaluation Unite at the Presidency, took Kufour to the cleaners, describing him as the most lawless, unprincipled and corrupt human being ever to be born on this planet. According to Dr. Aidoo, it was not that Kufour as President of this nation put aside the Constitution of the country ruled to satisfy his wishes against the wishes of majority of Ghanaians.

He maintained, “It is not surprising Kufour endorses lawlessness. This is the man who uses his power to set aside contract. The NPP does not use rule of law even though you hear them preaching all the time. For someone who has been President and pledged to defend the Constitution, how can you use presumption of bias, where there is no evidence. Being a President does not mean he is above the law.” On Radio Gold on Friday, the Deputy Interior Minister, Mr. Kobby Acheampong, and the Executive Director of Free Zone Board, Mr. Kojo Twum Boafo, supported the comment made by Dr. Aidoo.

According to Mr. Twum-Boafo, “He went against the Constitution. From what I’m reading, the cabinet is indicted. For former president to say that his former Ministers are right in not going to EOCO is not acceptable. If they have nothing to fear, why are they refusing to go. Kufour is the brain behind all these mess.”

Twum Boafo asserted, “Ex-President Kufour has not spoken well at all. Kufour sets up the National Reconciliation Commission and invited Rawlings to attended. Rawlings attended. Kufour should not support Akufo-Addo to make this country ungovernable. He should encourage his people to attend. He should not encourage lawlessness. What the Ex-President and his men are doing is not good for law enforcement agency.”.

Big Demo Rocks NPP

... for causing ‘gargantuan’ ¢580bn financial loss to the state

The CAN 2008 Judgment saga, one of the judgment debts that has cost the country and the poor Ghanaian taxpayer a whooping sum of GH¢600 million paid by the Mills’ led administration is turning ugly as the Concern NDC members with over million Ghanaians are ready to hit the streets tomorrow, Tuesday, 24th January 2012 to drum effectively, their call for the arrest of some key former ministers including former president Kuffour to account for their roles which made the State to lose such huge sums of money in payment of judgment debts.

The Concerned group of the ruling party which in a press conference last Tuesday appealed to the government to compel Ministers of the former Kuffour’s administration to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to account for their roles which made the State to lose huge sums of monies in payment of judgment debts or they will stake a demonstration said they are forced to go onto streets.

The group gave the government up to last Friday to compel officials of the past administration to appear before EOCO or they will hit the streets if government fails to heed their demand within the stipulated timeframe.

The group in that press conference noted the entire cabinet under the erstwhile Kufuor government must be arrested to assist with investigations into the controversial GHS 58 million judgment debts paid to Alfred Agbesi Woyome, a businessman. “Indeed Nana Addo, Kufuor, Osafo Marfo, Kan Dapaa, and the entire cabinet of 2005/2006 must account for why their recklessness and irresponsible decisions in government led to the lost of over a hundred million Ghana Cedis as judgment debt,” Robert stated and called for the resignation of NPP flag bearer, Akufo-Addo.

Ghana, a developing nation with multiple developmental challenges, be paying out 600 million Ghana Cedis in judgement debt in the last three years? How could Ghana loose 200 million Ghana Cedis in 2010 as per the Auditor Generals’ report? Yes the 58 million Ghana Cedis judgement debt paid to Woyome, currently being investigated, is big, but the 600 million lost to judgement debt in three years is huge.

“In furtherance to our Tuesday 17th January, 2012 threat at a Press Conference to put over one million Ghanaians into the streets of Accra to protest, should the government refuse to compel Kufour, Akufo Addo, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey and the government cabinet of 2005/2006 to cooperate with the EOCO, the Concerned NDC members wish to serve notice as follows: Compelling The Government Cabinet Of 2005/2006, Including Kufour, Akufo Addo And Jake Obetsebi Lamptey To Cooperate With The Investigations Of The EOCO

The demonstration will start at the Obra Spot, Circle through the Adabraka Police Station Road and End at the Osu Castle”, Hajia Sherifatu Sule, Spokesperson to the Group noted in a notice of demonstration statement It is recalled that members of the past government have refused to cooperate with the EOCO, the investigative body to unravel the circumstances leading to the payment of that quantum of money to Mr. Woyome as directed by President John Evans Atta Mills. The National Chairman of NPP, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey, has said the party would only encourage its members to participate in a public inquiry such as the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament.

But the NDC youth group, irritated by the NPP’s stance, say the party has no right to dictate to the President as to which organisation should carry out the investigations.

“We find the actions of Obestebi Lamptey to be criminal. Anyone who acts to protect criminals or stand in the way of lawful investigations is himself a criminal who must be prosecuted. We call on the state to immediately arrest Mr Obestebi Lamptey,” Secretary of the group, Robert Kpeteme, said during the press conference. They also questioned the motives of the Attorney-General, Martin Amidu, whom they say has “resurrected a dead and buried case against Mr Woyome...particularly when NPP companies and individuals have been paid judgment debts by the same government.” “The NPP did not suffer the kind of ridicule and frustrations Mr Woyome’s own party colleagues in government have subjected him to,” they stated, pledging their unflinching support for the NDC financier.

“We the Concerned Members of the NDC wish to give Government up to Friday 20th Jan 2012 to arrest and compel the NPP government cabinet of 2005/2006 to The EOCO. Indeed we want to state categorically that, if the cooperation of the said persons is not secured by Friday, the 20th January, 2012 we shall mobilize all the progressive groups in Ghana to embark on a massive demonstration to drive home our message. Therefore by this submission we are calling on all members of the NDC and other progressive movements to stand by for a crusade to clean our society of corruption”, the statement noted.

TUC, GPRTU cross swords over fuel price reduction

 * Source: Citifmonline

The Tema branch of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has stated it is unhappy with the Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union's (GPRTU) disapproval for a possible fuel price reduction, which is likely to force transport fares down.

The GPRTU national vice president, Alhaji Tetteh told Citi News, drivers are not willing to reduce their fares should government announce a reduction in fuel prices.

He said doing so will create chaos among GPRTU members.

"It will be very hard for me to go back to my people and ask them to reduce the fares because immediately after the increase in fuel the IRS also increased the income tax," Alhaji Tetteh said.

"How do we go back and reduce the lorry fares… it will be very hard."

But the chairman of the Tema District Labour Union, Wilson Agana said the concerns of the GPRTU should not prevent government from reducing the fuel prices.

Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Kofi Asamoah, has confirmed to Citi News that, talks between the TUC and Government over a possible fuel price reduction will continue on Tuesday.

Mr. Asamoah said the first set of talks with government last Friday did not yield much progress.

According to him, efforts will be made to get government to accept the demands of TUC members for fuel prices to be reduced by end of this week.
