The festival is celebrated first week in July.
They said they had made several attempts to present a new Chief Fisherman to Nana Conduah but he refused to allow him to swear before him (Nana Conduah) because of his support for Nana Solomon.
Mr. Robert Mensah, the Secretary for the Association, said at a press conference on Wednesday that failure of the Omanhen to recognize the new Chief Fisherman, Nana Egya Akonu, was their bone of contention. He said rituals leading to the celebration of the festival were ongoing and it would require the involvement of the new Chief Fisherman. Mr Mensah said the peace would be disrupted if the Omanhen insisted on celebrating the festival.
"We will resist with all seriousness any attempt to parade Nana Solomon as the Chief Fisherman," they said. Mr. Mensah said Nana Solomon was destooled in September last year by the Association because he had since 2004, failed to render accounts of his stewardship to the Association. He said Nana Solomon summoned the Association to the Cape Coast High Court where the case was ruled against him in March. Mr Mensah said having won the case the Association elected Nana Akonu and all efforts to introduce him to the Omanhen had failed. | Government has failed to honour electoral promises - Akufo-Addo * Source: GNA | Akim Oda (E/R), June 10, GNA - Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, one of the presidential aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Monday said the present government has failed to honour all the electoral promises made to Ghanaians.
"This clearly shows that Ghanaians cannot rely on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government", he stressed.
Nana Akufo-Addo was addressing the Akim Oda Constituency delegates of the NPP at the Methodist Conference Hall, Oda, to solicit for their votes in the party's flag-bearer race.
He called on the delegates and polling station executives to work diligently at the grassroots level to enable the party to recapture political power from NDC come 2012.
Nana Akufo-Addo asked the delegates to give him the mandate to lead the party by overwhelmingly voting him as the flagbearer, adding that the increases in utility tariffs, coupled with the mishandling of the School Feeding Programme, National Health Insurance Scheme and National Youth Employment Programme initiated by the NPP administration, had been messed up by the present government and that he had a vision to ensure their successful implementation.
Mr Yaw Osafo Maafo, a former Member of Parliament for Akim Oda Constituency, advised party members to desist from acts that would tarnish the party's hard won reputation and, therefore, called on them to rally behind Nana Akufo-Addo who was capable of turning the economy around to bring smile to the faces of Ghanaians.
Other speakers included Mr Yaw Owusu Boateng, MP for the Constituency, Mr William Ketu, Presiding Member of the Birim Central Assembly, Prince Aboagye, Eastern Regional Secretary of NPP and Mr Yaw Mintah Debra, NPP constituency Chairman. | Group calls on Nana and Alan to step aside for peace * Source: GNA | Kumasi, June 10, GNA - A group calling itself "Osonoma United" has appealed to the two frontrunners in the race for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential ticket, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo and Mr Alan Kyerematen, to resign from the contest for the sake of the peace and unity of the party.
It said their acrimonious campaign was dividing the party and must not be allowed to continue.
A statement issued by the Coordinator, Kwabena Adjei, said the NPP could not afford to suffer electoral defeat in 2012 because of the presidential ambitions of the two. The leadership of the party should therefore prevail on them to take the back stage since there were other competent personalities with solid record of achievements.
It also cautioned against the use of money to influence delegates to the presidential primaries and said this could destroy the nation's democracy. | | . | | ______________________ |

| Ghana TV News 10th June 2010 + Latest Ghana News | Ghana TV News 10th June 2010 + Latest Ghana News | | | | Bloody Clash In NDC * Source: Daily Guide | Internal bickering over the 2012 presidential bid of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings got bloody yesterday when Herbert Mensah, a close associate of the Rawlingses, clashed with Ato Ahwoi, a leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), over the veracity of whether President John Evans Atta Mills suffered delusions- seeing imaginary trees, human beings and losing his mental balance- before the last elections which brought him to power. According to Herbert Mensah, Ato Ahwoi, a close associate of the president, had told him “Mills was seeing trees, people, losing mental stability, confidence and consulting priests and did not want to go ahead.”
When Kwabena Andoh, a close pal of Herbert Mensah, who Herbert claimed to be a witness to the discussion on Mills’ state of health, was invited to speak, he corroborated the point, explaining that Ato Ahwoi did admit that Mills was in a poor state of health and disoriented.
“I said wow! It is still fresh on my mind,” he said, adding that Ato Ahwoi had said, “Mills was unwell, hallucinating and could not tell where he was.”
He said the statement was so gloomy that it is still fresh in his mind.
“This is not a fabrication. They discussed Plan A and B,” Kwabena Andoh, who was speaking to the issue on Radio Gold yesterday, said.
Ato Ahwoi, member of the Mills’ kitchen cabinet and Chairman of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), denied ever making such disclosures during the verbal clash on Radio Gold yesterday.
The internal power struggle in the NDC is becoming embarrassing to the party’s leadership, leading to the holding of a crisis meeting yesterday, with a team paying a solidarity visit to the President at the Castle.
The vitriolic engagement was prompted by the recently flown ‘Nana Konadu for president’ kite for the 2012 polls- which Ato Ahwoi describes as a sinister move being replayed after a previous failure when it was tried out by Herbert Mensah.
Mr. Ahwoi, while reacting to the unfolding Nana Konadu bid for the NDC presidential candidacy, noted that “knowing where Herbert Mensah was coming from, I am not surprised.”
He said sometime in 2007, he was told by ex-President Jerry John Rawlings to support a bid to remove then Candidate Mills as flagbearer of the NDC because he was not going to live to see the election- a situation which was going to mess up the NDC.
According to him, the ex-president asked him to substitute Candidate Mills and become the flagbearer, as Rawlings feared Mills might not last the strain of the rigorous presidential campaign.
“What is happening now, that is the bid by Nana Konadu, ex-first lady,” he said, “is a continuation of a grand design to make it impossible for President Mills to go for a second term.”
Mr. Ahwoi served notice however that he is ready to spill his blood and lay down his life to ensure that Mills goes for a second term, come what may.
“In 2007, Herbert Mensah told me to convince Prof Mills to step down for Spio-Garbrah since Mills was sick. It is the same scenario being played out,” he said, adding that ex-President Rawlings also requested same from him.
“In 2008, I was told by President Rawlings to go and contest Mills. I know where they are coming from. They said Mills was sick and that by June he would be a dead person and trying to get another candidate would create confusion,” Ahwoi said, explaining further that in February 2008, he was asked to dump Mills for a new person, to which he declined.
“I refused, we went and won and we are in power,” he said. What was not achievable in 2007, he noted, is being played out once more on the political turf.
On why Spio-Garbrah is not being presented since it was his name which was considered as a replacement for Mills, he explained, “The political game can be very confusing. If you put one person and he does not do it, you try another who could be very greedy.”
Ato Ahwoi claimed that he used to go to Herbert Mensah’s office once or twice a week in those days but stopped when the ‘dump Mills’ proposal was made.
He said he disagreed with the proposal to replace Mills with Spio because it did not make sense to put forth someone who garnered 14 percent of the votes during the party’s congress, adding that the NPP would have laughed at the NDC over the proposal.
Considering what Nana Akufo-Addo got, he asked, “How could we justify the choice of Spio-Garbrah?”
He said he proposed the invitation of others such as PV Obeng and Kwesi Botchwey for consideration if that was necessary at all.
“I insisted that Mills was not sick and would win and we all supported including others who thought like me,” he said.
“When my brothers (Ahwoi brothers) were contacted to convince Mills (to step down) they also refused,” he said.
When he took his turn, Herbert Mensah opened a can of worms about how he and others invested so much money to have Mills win the presidency, asking why Ato Ahwoi, now wielding so much power in the government, is antagonizing people under cover.
“Everybody is angry with Ato Ahwoi,” he charged.
He described what Ato Ahwoi said as “blatant lies”, stressing, “I have a recording of what happened when we met and have two witnesses.
Ato Ahwoi is wielding too much power. I expect the leaders of the party to use a platform to bring the party together instead of this.”
He recalled that when he engaged Ahwoi in his office, the discussion was about the health of Mills.
Describing his office as the nerve centre of the Mills campaign, he said he demanded the truth about the health status of the candidate, given the media reports of the day.
Herbert Mensah said the meeting was held in the presence of a certain Mercy, adding his search about the veracity of the ‘Mills is sick’ claim took him to Captain Kojo Tsikata who asked that there should be no panic and nothing should be done about the issue.
Mr. Ahwoi, he went on, said Rawlings would prefer a Spio replacement, however admitting that this would be in contravention of NDC rules and regulations.
“The lies and misrepresentation from the Ahwoi quarter must cease. He must stop this nonsense and stop victimizing people. If this is the opening salvo, let him stop it. If this is his radio station, let him stop it. People’s lives are being affected. A lot of us have invested to get this presidency.
He hides behind covers to victimize people. It’s a radio station. I hope the South African still has the tape. A lot of us have been victimized. I did not ask Mills to step down”.
Herbert Mensah recalled how Ato Ahwoi said Spio would only become an NDC candidate over his ‘dead body’.
When Ato Ahwoi took his turn to speak again, he said he was pleased that Herbert was agitated over their radio exchanges because he can reveal that it was Herbert who came up with the idea of a ‘Plan B’ which, he explained, is a practice in business circles since he is a businessman.
“I have a text message he sent me. Probably he has forgotten. At anytime, I would make it public. If Mills has blood in him, I would do everything to have him retain his seat and presidency of Ghana. I would spill my blood, lay down my life,” he said.
The South African, Ryan, who took part in the strategizing for the NDC, when he came on air from far away South Africa, recalled the meeting about Mills’ health, but could not remember all the details, adding that this was about the time that the candidate was in South Africa.
According to him, Ahwoi agreed that Mills had a challenge with his eye sight and by and large, the meeting was about replacing Mills, since it was they who were supporting the NDC campaign machinery with strategies.
Mr. Ato Ahwoi had previously clashed with Ekwow Spio-Garbrah when the latter wrote an essay on the challenges of the Mills government which was found distasteful to members of the pro-Mills camp.
This recent engagement is coming on the heels of the burgeoning Nana Konadu for 2012 bid, a development considered a plot to dump the incumbent as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming polls.
The engagement has deepened the schism which is playing out in the ruling party, leaving it divided along the lines of a pro-Rawlings and Mills camp.
| NDC condemns destabilising acts against President Mills * Source: GNA | Accra, June 10, GNA - The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday condemned destabilising acts against President John Evans Atta Mills by individuals with the objective of furthering the presidential ambitions of some personalities within the party.
"The modus operandi of these potential aspirants has been the promotion and support of mushroom organisations within the party to begin and intensify agitations based on genuine challenges the leadership is trying to address," Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, General Secretary of the party stated at a press conference in Accra.
Mr Asiedu Nketiah flanked by Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, a National Vice Chairperson, Mr Yaw Boateng Gyan, National Organiser, Mr Kobina Ade-Coker, Greater Accra Regional Chairman and other leading members was launching the party's 18th Anniversary Celebration.
He said the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the party took serious view of these developments and reminded all concerned that the first commitment of an NDC member was to accept the constitution, aims, objectives, policies and programmes of the party.
The NDC General Secretary reminded the presidential aspirants that Article 42 and 43 of the party's Constitution mandated the National Executive Committee to issue guidelines before the conduct of any parliamentary and presidential primaries.
"While FEC re-affirms the rights of every member of NDC to aspire to any position within the party and the country at large, FEC also wish to maintain that these rights must be exercised within the confines of NDC Constitution and the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana," he stated. Mr Asiedu Nketiah reminded the aspiring flagbearers of the party that: "Ghanaians would judge their promises of upholding and defending the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana by what they do with their own party's Constitution".
He cautioned the aspirants that "as non-incumbent contestants, they are most vulnerable to the abuse of incumbency and would eventually need a strong, firm and unbiased National Executive backed by a strong party Constitution to protect them from such potential abuses in order to create an even playing field for any such contestants".
The NDC General Secretary condemned some government appointees, including District Chief Executives and Ministers of State, who had also started schemes to undermine sitting NDC Members of Parliament with the hope of replacing them in the next elections.
"The NDC, a social democratic political party, was founded by Ex-President Jerry John Rawlings, who was Head of State of Ghana from 1981 to 1993 and the President from 1993 to 2001," Mr Asiedu Nketiah stated. | Minister appeals to queen mothers stop harmful practices * Source: GNA | Takoradi, June 10, GNA - Madam Betty Busumtwi-Sam, the Deputy Western Regional Minister, has said education was the key to stop harmful traditional practices meted out to women and girls. She said though tradition was good to maintain the nation's cultural heritage, those that affect the health of people must be disregarded. Madam Busumtwi-Sam said queen mothers and chiefs must therefore lead the campaign to modify traditional practices that tarnish the image and health of women and girls.
She was addressing 40 queen mothers from Sekondi-Takoradi and Shama areas at a capacity building workshop organized by the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs on the Domestic Violence Act at Takoradi. Madam Busumtwi-Sam said since education was the only way that could stop the practices, parents and guardians must send their children to school. She said as violence against women and girls continued to be practiced, queen mothers should not connive with victims' relatives to accept compensation to settle the cases at home.
Madam Busumtwi-Sam appealed to traditional leaders to report such cases to the police for the law to take its course.
She urged the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs to initiate legislation to ban lesbianism and homo-sexuality in the country and appealed to queen mothers to speak up against such practices "as it is not our custom."
Madam Busumtwi-Sam appealed to women to contest the district level election and suggested to the queen mothers to encourage women to contest. | | |

| All about the Ghana Election 2008 | | | Ghana TV News 10th June 2010 + Latest Ghana News | Vice President expresses displeasure on NDC divisive tendencies * Source: GNA | Accra, June 10, GNA - Vice President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday registered his displeasure on infighting and perpetual disagreements within the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He said that although disagreements were part of democratic dispensation that gave party members the opportunity to bring out their concerns, there was the need to reach a consensus after such disagreements for development. "It was the strong will of our supporters and God that brought us into power in 2008 and we need to continue to appreciate God's blessings. If we have to continue the way we are doing now, then I am afraid, God will not forgive us for our disagreements and may end up punishing us for not appreciating His efforts."
Vice President Mahama was addressing the Tema Sub-Region members of the United Cadre Front, a Socialist and Communist component of the NDC. The meeting, made up party members and sympathizers from Tema and its surrounding areas, was organized to inform the Vice President on some of their activities and the way forward to win the 2012 general election. It also offered the Vice President the opportunity to explain some government policies to them.
He said political parties like any other human institutions were characterized by disagreements because different talents and orientations, but the ability of those members to manage their disagreements was necessary for them to forge ahead.
Mr. Mahama, who was apparently referring to some of the rebellious activities of party members, advised them against the use of divisive tendencies to destroy the party in future elections. "I am however happy that some of these issues are raised now, if it was an election year we would have been in trouble. A divided body cannot stand just like others say 'united we stand and divided we fall." He called on them to exercise restrain and continue to propagate the achievements for them to win subsequent elections, rather than dwelling so much on petty issues that would not enhance the development of the party. "Our destiny is in our own hands and if we throw it others will trample upon it and if we hold it tight, it is for our benefit." Nana Otuo Barimah, a representative of the United Cadre Front, called on members to desist from expressing their political ambitions and rather support the current leadership to reshape the economy. He said that "It is premature to be talking of positions now, when we have the task of winning more souls to enable us to consolidate our position in the next general election."
Nana Barimah said it was "immoral, unholy and unfortunate" for people to be thinking of parochial interest instead of fighting for something that will benefit all of us in this country." He commended the Government for taking measures to improve roads, schools and school facilities in the country. | Rawlingses want to create tension between Mills & Ahwoi - Omane Boamah * Source: Myjoyonline | The Deputy Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, Dr Omane Boamah, says he suspects a calculated attempt by the Rawlingses to draw a wedge between Mr Ato Ahwoi and President Mills.
This follows stunning revelations on Radio Gold Wednesday when a close ally to the Rawlingses, Herbert Mensah, accused Mr Ato Ahwoi, a close confidant of the President, of being the mastermind behind issues concerning the then candidate Mills' health.
According to Herbert Mensah, "it was Ato Ahwoi who actually told us that Prof. Mills wasn't well. He said that he was becoming delusional, that he was seeing priests, he was seeing people, because he was losing his mental stability and that he has lost confidence."
But Mr Ahwoi said it was rather Herbert Mensah who on many occasions tried to convince him to do all within his power to get Prof. Mills out of the race in 2007 to give chance to Dr Ekwow Spio-Garbrah.
Speaking on Metro TV's Good Morning Ghana programme Thursday, Dr Boamah corroborated Ato Ahwoi's assertions, adding that he [Ahwoi] had shown messages sent him by the Rawlingses to Prof Mills.
The Deputy Minister told the Rawlingses to note that whether they like it or not they would have to put up with President Mills for two and a half years more.
Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide Newspaper, who was also on the programme, described as unfair the treatment being meted out on the President.
He questioned the motive behind these revelations about a person who is no longer a candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) but carries the image of all Ghanaians at the international level, especially in the public domain [on air].
Mr Baako cautioned President Mills to "take a critical look at his surroundings and purge himself of certain elements." | The Rawlingses Want Power Because Of Ghana’s Oil -Boakye Gyan * Source: The Informer | As Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings continue to irk majority of Ghanaians with their mental disorder which is referred to as Messiahnic Delusions by some psychologists, Capt Rtd. Kwadwo Boakye Gyan, Spokesperson for the erstwhile AFRC, seems to have a fair idea as to what is pushing the former President and his wife to want power at all cost.
According to Boakye-Gyan, as far as he is concerned, Rawlings and his wife are desperate for power because of Ghana’s imminent oil resources.
Speaking on TV3’s Agenda programme a day before the June 4 declaration that Konadu Agyeman Rawlings is dreaming of becoming the flagbearer of the NDC in 2012, Osahene Boakye-Gyan did not mince words in deciphering the real motive behind what Rawlings and his wife are up to.
According to the AFRC’s Spokesperson, he knows Rawlings very well and so can read through the mind of the former President and his wife.
Speaking his mind without much difficulty, Osahene Boakye-Gyan spoke at length about who Jerry Rawlings is and how he has the capacity to manipulate and use pretence to achieve his selfish ends.
According to Boakye-Gyan, all the attempts by the Rawlingses to create the impression that they are not wealthy, is a façade because he knows it for a fact that a lot of their actions are actuated by the desire to acquire wealth. For those who don’t know, Captain Kwadwo Boakye-Gyan was the best man when Jerry John Rawlings was wedding Nana Konadu and both men were very close pals until they fell out with each other somewhere along the line. | Litter bins to be distributed to all households * Source: GNA | Accra, June 10, GNA - Waste Disposal companies have embarked on the distribution of waste bins to their respective areas. Anyone found using an unauthorised waste bin within the Accra Metropolitan area would be arrested and prosecuted, the Assembly member for Memeete Electoral Area, Miss Jane Oku at Sabon Zongo said on Thursday. She stated this during the organisation of sporting activities to create awareness among the youth and opinion leaders on the need to dispose of refuse properly.
She said conscious efforts were being made by the AMA to create public awareness on the effect of indiscriminate disposal of filth in Accra. She said ZoomLion was the accredited service provider to evacuate filth within the Ablekuma Central area and appealed to the Zongo Community, the youth and the opinion leaders to cooperate with the Company to ensure environmental sanitation.
Miss Oku stressed the need for Ghanaians to change their atti ude towards sanitation issues and commended civic groups within the area for their contribution towards peace in the community. She gave the assurance that officials of ZoomLion were ready to explain issues concerning waste disposal in the community. Mr Innocent Tarnoh, a Ghanaian Soccer International playing with F.C. Garanada in Spain, who sponsored the programme commended the Assemblywoman for her efforts in organising the youth groups in the area to undertake the clean-up exercise and community mobilization work. |
