Mpiani Buys $70,000 Benz

for Kufuor

Even before the so-called concerned friends of Kufuor present him with their custom made BMW 7-series ordered from Europe, and even before Asamoah-Boateng completes his so-called fund-raising to buy a car for the ex-President, Kwadwo Mpiani, the ex-Chief of Staff has bought a brand new S-320 Mercedes Benz for him.

The Benz was delivered to ex-President Kufuor last Thursday afternoon and though this paper cannot tell how much Mpiani paid for it, and whether he paid in cash or by cheques, our search has revealed that a brand new S-320 cost $70,864.50 in the open market.

Obviously, it was in preparation to buy this car that Kufuor got his spokesman to tell the whole world that with the retrieval of the last batch of state vehicles from his house, he no longer has even a single car to use.

Ever since he stepped down as ex-President, ordinary Ghanaians have had their ears assailed by various arguments about why the state must full be responsible for his sophisticated taste and life of opulence.

Before leaving office, he grabbed a state building and installed in it sophisticated electronic equipments used imported from the US and South Africa with state funds with the belief that NPP flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo will win the election so he can convert this state property into his personal one.

When the state decided to retrieve it, Kufuor and his henchmen cried foul, claiming he was being deprived of his office. Then it came to cars. The ex-Presidency left office taking along state vehicles meant for the Presidency, a pure act of thievery. When they were retrieved by the state, he became angry and rejected the two brand new Chryslers given to him by the government.

Then only last week, he is reported to have again rejected two S-320 Mercedes Benz cars offered him by the government while getting his spokesperson and apologists to tell the whole world that he no longer has a car to use.

Then came news that a group calling itself Concerned Friends of Kufuor have ordered a custom-made BMW 7-series for him from Europe.

Another news item fed Ghanaians was that Asamoah Boateng, a former Minister in his government was raising funds to buy the ex-President a new car. Of course, as this paper put out last week, the ex-President is reputed to be filthily rich so his the tears he is shedding alleging he has no cars are nothing but crocodile tears and an attempt to hide his loot.

Intelligence source have told this paper that Kufuor has gotten people to front for him and use his own money to buy cars for him. This paper cannot tell whether Mpiani bought the car on his own or with Kufuor’s own money but what is certain is that the purchase of the brand new S-320 Benz for Kufuor was in Mpiani’s name.

Yet Another Region?
... Creation of new region should be in the interest of all -Veep
Bole (N/R), GNA - Vice President John Dramani Mahama has said the creation of a new region out of the Northern Region should be in the interest of all northerners and not seen as the agenda of any group of people.

He said the Northern Region covered a vast expanse of land and it was therefore necessary for it to be divided into two to ensure effective and smooth administration and its accelerated development.

Vice President Mahama said this in response to an appeal by the Gonja Traditional Council to expedite action on the creation of another region out of the present northern region at the 33rd Annual Congress of the Gonjaland Youth Association (GYA) in Bole on Sunday.

The theme for the Congress was: "Challenges of the Gonjaland Youth Association at 33."

The Gonja Traditional Council has since 2003 petitioned the previous NPP government for the creation of another administrative region out of the Northern Region.

Vice President Mahama said the creation of a new region would be based on merit and in accordance with due constitutional processes.

The Vice President said the tarring of the remaining portion of the Bole/Bamboi road and the Swala/Fulfuso road was a priority concern of government and special funding was being sought for the project.

He re-echoed governments intention to use agriculture as the pivot for the development of the country and said in line with this a Youth in Agriculture Programme would soon be launched to encourage the youth to go into medium and large scale commercial farming.

The youth would be encouraged to form cooperatives to enable them access credit facilities and other farming inputs.

Vice President Mahama reiterated that the government would establish a Sheanut Development Board to manage the affairs of the sheanut industry and also establish a sheanut processing factory which is likely to be sited at Buipe in the Central Gonja District.

He said government would soon establish a teacher training institution in Bole to train more teachers to serve the Northern Region and also promised to build a boys' hostel for the Bole Senior High School.

Mr. Stephen Sumani Nayina, the Northern Regional Minister, said the NDC government was committed to continuing with all the good policies, projects and programmes initiated by the previous regime.

He said under the District Wide Assistance Project a number of projects including the construction of a five- unit police barracks at Abrumasi, the construction of one teacher   accommodation at Wambong, surgical theatre with maternity ward at Sawla and the construction and furnishing of a girls' hostel at Damongo Health Nursing Assistants Training School.

Bolewura Amankwa Gbeadese II, Paramount Chief of the Bole Traditional Area, appealed to the government to post more doctors and other paramedics to the area.

He also appealed for the provision of a small town water supply to Bole, saying that the system which was developed for a population of 6,000 was no longer capable of serving the population of 16,000 people.

Alhaji Ahmed Ewura, National President of the GYA, enumerated some of the challenges facing the association as lack of infrastructural development in Gonjaland and the inability to harness its well endowed natural resources such as water bodies, tourist sites and the lime and gold deposits at Buipe and Dakuripe and Bombire to the advantage of Gonjaland.

Alhaji Ewura commended the Sawla_Tuna-Kalba District for its spectacular performance in the 2007 and 2008 Basic Education Certificate Examination.

The results saw an improvement in the overall performance of the district making it move from the 44th to the 16 position in the nationwide rankings and subsequently emerging the best district in the three northern regions.

GYA elected a five-member executive with Mr. Saddique Bakari Nayeri as National President and Mr. Yussif Ibrahim as secretary to run the affairs of the association for the next two years.

Vice President Mahama, a member of the association gave GH¢2,000 during an appeal for funds to help run its affairs.

Essam appeal for electricity supply

Essam (ER), April 19, GNA- The people of Essam in the Birim Central Municipality of the Eastern Region have reiterated their call for the Municipal Assembly and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to supply the town with electricity.

Mr. Reginald Sackey, Assembly Member for Essam Electoral Area near Akim Oda told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the people had purchased low-tension poles, estimated at 1,800 Ghana cedis. According to him, about 56 poles were needed for the electrification project but as a poor farming community, it was difficult for them to raise additional funds for the rest of the poles.

Mr. Sackey who spoke for the town's electrification committee stated that officials from the regional office of the ECG were at Essam to enumerate the households to be covered and were emphatic that the government would supply the low-tension poles without cost to the community the promise had not been fullfilled.

He said Essam catered for more than 10 surrounding villages and that with the completion of the project, the area could be opened up for more commercial activities that would enhance the people's living conditions. Mr Sackey, therefore, urged the authorities to come to their assistance to prevent the decay of the poles they had already purchased.

President Mills feels at home in Volta Region

Ho, April 18, GNA- President John Evans Atta Mills arrived to a warm welcome in Ho the Volta Regional capital on Friday and declared the region his second home.

"As I drove through town I waved more than I could bear", he quipped. "If today I come to you as President it's because you made it possible," President Mills told a motley crowd of royals, party members and sympathizers, including some former regional stalwarts of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who jumped ship prior to the 2000 elections perhaps seeking to make a comeback. President Mills, who is on A three-day visit to the region to express his appreciation to the people would however, limit his activities to the Ho Municipal area.

A mild late afternoon sun crawling across from the Eastern sky to the West, cast a golden brightness on the colourful atmosphere of conviviality at the forecourt of the Asogli Palace where the crowd, amidst the throbbing of talking drums waited patiently and expectantly for the arrival of President Mills. His arrival at the forecourt suddenly sparked off pushing and shoving as the crowd sought to have a physical touch of him, compelling the police at certain stages to form a human barrier between the President and his admirers.

After the necessary traditional courtesies the Agbogbomefia Togbe Afede XIV minced no words in telling President Mills why the region contributed to his victory efforts and their expectations of him. "Volta Region desired change because we have not fared well" it is therefore the expectation that the "next eight years" would bring landmark changes to the region, the Agbogbomefia said. The stool father and uncle of Agbogbomefia, Togbe Akpo put it more bluntly as he poured libation wishing President Mills well and reminding him of the dashed hopes of the region in the first eight years of the NDC rule.

Togbe Afede said the expectations of the people of the Volta Region, not withstanding, President Mills should be leader of the whole of Ghana, ruling in justice, fairness and humility. In a brief response, President Mills thanked Togbe Afede for his role in the transition process, "I say a big thank you for coming to our aid". "I know that the greatest expectation of the region is your roads, you have Joe Gidisu," in reference to the Minister of Roads and Highways.

Mac Manu must resign -NPP Organizer
A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Eastern region Eric Tetteh has urged the National Chairman of the party Peter Mac Manu to resign and to save the party from breaking up.

He said the conduct of the Chairman did not promote the interest of the NPP.

Speaking to ASEMPA NEWS, Mr. Tetteh who is the Yilo Krobo Constituency Organizer said there was no advanced preparation towards the recently held Jirapa by-election as has been the case whenever there was a by-election.

Mr Tetteh also accused the National Chairman of not taking much interest in the Jirapa by-election adding, that lack of commitment accounted for the NPP’s big loss in the 2008 elections.

He claimed, Mac Manu is not on good terms with the General Secretary of the party Nana Ohene Ntow which according to him may be another factor in the party’s inability to secure 50% plus votes in last year’s general elections.

Meanwhile the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Kwaku Kwarteng has urged members and supporters of the party to forward all their grievances to the executives of the party instead of rushing to the media.

Reacting to the allegations of Mr Tetteh , Mr. Kwarteng indicated that, it is not true that, poor preparation towards the Jirapa by-election led the party’s loss.

According to him, Mr. Mac Manu, General Secretary Ohene Ntow, MPs and other party executives were at Jirapa campaigned feverishly for the seat.

Urging members not to wash their dirty linen in public, Mr. Kwarteng told ‘EKOSII SEN’ on ASEMPA FM that the current executives have only eight months to go since a National Conference would be held in December to elect new executives for the party.

The Communications Director who did not understand basis of Mr. Tetteh’s call also reminded party members of the Hayman Committee which has been tasked to go round the country to find out the causes of the party’s defeat at last year’s elections.

Editorial: The Hundred Days Fuss
President Atta Mills on Tuesday expressed concern about how some members of the public and the media have made a fetish over his 100 days in office, and the fulfillment of his promises, since assumption of the Presidency

President Mills went to great lengths to explain the difference between pledges made to be fulfilled during his 100 days in office, and campaign promises in the manifesto of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to be achieved in the party's four-year term of government.

We, however, beg to differ with the President, and rather accuse him of bringing all these 100 days brouhaha upon himself. The NDC government, in the aftermath of the 2008 elections, after assuming the reigns of power, maybe in their euphoric glory stressed that they should be judged by their 100-day promises, at the end of the 100 days.

In a normal election cycle, when a new President takes office, it has been customary for there to be a 100-day honeymoon, between the new government on one side, and the political detractors and the media on the other side of the political spectrum. During this period, the government is allowed to proceed in office, mostly without criticism, in order to allow them settle in and get into normal operational mode.

Once the customary100-day grace period expires, it is expected that the President would have put his government in place. The gloves are then supposed to come off, and the opposition, as well as the press, can then take all the shots they want at him, and his performance.

On his assumption of office, President Mills, by his actions, thrust a dagger in the hands of his political opponents, with his pledges and promises, which he said would be fulfilled in 100 days. Maybe President Mills took a cue from former American President, Franklin Roosevelt, who chose to forego the traditional customary 100-day honeymoon period, and begin work directly, an indication of the severity of the national economic crisis. In an unprecedented fashion, Roosevelt had his cabinet sworn in unceremoniously, and there seemed to be a sense of motion, energy and determination among Americans.

By the President's pledges and promises to be fulfilled within 100 days, the government should not expect much of a political honeymoon, or settling-in period for an incoming administration. This is because the media should, along the line, scrutinize the new government to make sure that they were taking the right strides in fulfillment of their set 100-day objectives.

It would take a miracle for any government to promise to heal the nation's endemic sanitation problems in 100 days, among other promises. For us at The Chronicle, we would not delude ourselves into buying the scam that the so-called magic wand of a 100-day period can be used, by any stretch of one's imagination, to achieve any meaningful socio-economic plans.

What we can genuinely expect from a government, which has been in office for a little over three months or 100 days, is that the socio-politico and economic indicators are showing good signs.

Regional Minister sacks police commander
Northern Regional Minister, Hon Stephen Sumani Nayina, says he and the other members of the Northern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) do not want the presence of the Northern Regional Commander of Police, DCOP Ofosu Mensah Gyeabour on the council anymore.

The regional Minister is of the opinion that the Police Commander cannot be trusted with delicate security information and thus does not deserve to be on the Council.

Speaking in an interview on the Citi Breakfast Show, the regional Minister confirmed newspaper reports that he had walked DCOP Mensah- Gyeabour out of a Regional Security Council meeting on Tuesday April 14 for leaking intelligence information to the media.

It is alleged that the DCOP Mensah-Gyeabour last month informed the media about some decisions the REGSEC had taken to extend a one-month moratorium given all residents of Tamale to surrender their weapons.

The REGSEC was scheduled to address a press conference to make the announcement about the developments but the Regional Police Commander leaked the information to the press a day before the press conference was to take place.

Reports indicate that the Police Commander, who humbly saluted and bowed out of the REGSEC meeting, apologised for his conduct in due course.

Crime officer for the Northern Region, Peter Baba Atianak replaced him at the meeting.

The Regional Minister however said in the interview on the Citi Breakfast Show that his action was taken in the interest of the peace of the area.

Mr Nayina said the action of the Police Chief was inexcusable because all security personnel in the region are aware of the delicate nature of security matters in the area and as such were expected to be circumspect in the manner they dealt with them.

According to him he had sent information to the National Police Command about the conduct of DCOP Mensah-Gyeabour and had notified them that the Northern REGSEC had concluded they could no longer work with him.

Though not stating categorically that he wanted DCOP Mensah Gyeabour out of office, Hon. S.S. Nayina said “if he thinks he can be Regional Commander and not attend council meetings then it’s up to him”.

Attempts by Citi News to reach the Northern Regional Commander of Police, DCOP Ofosu Mensah Gyeabour for his comments on the matter have proved futile.

Retired Army Officer, Capt Joel Kwami Sowu (retd) however tells Citi News in an interview that the Minister did not have the power to walk the Police Commander out of the meeting and describes the action as gross disrespect and an affront to the ethics of the security service.

He said disgracing the Police Commander in the presence of junior officers without consideration for his long years in the service and disrespecting the due process in dealing with such matters, was unfortunate.

Capt Sowu (retd) noted that the action of the Regional Commander suggested that DCOP Gyeabour was not fit to belong to the Police Service.

According to him, the matter should have first been taken up with the Inspector General of Police, Mrs. Elizabeth Mills-Robertson for redress because the Police Commander is directly answerable to her.

He remarked that DCOP Mensah-Gyeabour could not be proven guilty, despite his apology, until proven so by a competent court of jurisdiction.

Adomi Bridge - Minister calls for prosecution

of public officials

Kpong (E/R), April 17, GNA - Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the Eastern Regional Minister, has directed officials of the Ghana Highways Authority (GHA) to take legal action against drivers who carry weights above the acceptable tonnage across the Adomi Bridge. He has also appealed to the GHA and the Ghana Police Service Administration to investigate the conduct of their personnel who were on duty at the Adomi Bridge on the night of April 15 to the dawn of the following day and allowed overweight vehicles to cross the bridge. The minister said appropriate sanctions should be taken against any official found to have misconducted himself.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said this when he inspected two loaded articulator trucks, one weighing 51 tons and the other 50 tons, which were arrested at Kpong after they had crossed the bridge on April 16. He expressed regret that state officials detailed to protect national assets like the Adom Bridge rather turned round to connive with others to break the law to destroy property that they were supposed to protect.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo went to the area after he had been informed that an official of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) who tried to prevent overweight vehicles from crossing the bridge had his VW Golf three salon car with registration number GR 2894 T destroyed when one of the cargo truck drivers intentionally crushed his truck into the vehicle last Wednesday night. Patrick Jiagre, the driver of the cargo truck with registration number GT 3126 H weighing 49.8 tons, has been arrested by the Atimpoku Police and placed in custody. The maximum weight of vehicles allowed to cross the bridge is 30 tons.

Vodafone officially launched

Accra, April 16, GNA - Vodafone was officially launched in Ghana on Wednesday night with a pledge that it would provide customers with the highest quality and most reliable mobile network.

After buying a 70 per cent shareholding in the Ghana Telecommunication Company in August 2008, partnering with the Government of Ghana, Vodafone has made significant investments to improve the performance and to expand the capacity of its networks, an official statement in Accra said.

It said Vodafone had also signed a multi-million dollar deal with Huawei Technologies to bring its 3G network services to the Ghanaian market, giving customers access to high speed mobile internet services in the future.

Mr David Venn, Chief Executive Officer of Vodafone Ghana, said: "Today's announcement is the next step in a telecommunications renaissance across Ghana. Vodafone will offer the most reliable and cost effective services in the Ghanaian market and we will set the benchmark for customer satisfaction. Our customers should expect an excellent network as the basis for these services and we are committed to delivering it."

He added: "I would like to thank all Ghanaians for the welcome we have received and the tremendous interest they have shown in Vodafone since we arrived here in this market. We have also invested in the social fabric of Ghana, deploying community booths, supporting National Farmers day and helping the educational funds of a number of the traditional areas. I look forward to announcing similar initiatives in due course."

The statement said the official launch of Vodafone follows the successful joining together of the Ghana Telecommunications Company (GT) with Vodafone Group, which serves over 290 million customers in 27 countries around the world.

The statement noted that Vodafone Ghana, originally the Post and Telecommunications Department of the Civil Service, went through several transformations before being renamed Ghana Telecom in 1996. It was divested first to a consortium called G-Comm Limited led by Telekom Malaysia and was later managed by a Norwegian management services company known as Telenor Management Partners (TMP). It employs close to 3,400 Ghanaians and is a major source of employment in the communications industry. As the industry leader, providing fixed, mobile and broadband services, the company serves as the backbone for economic growth and development in the ICT sector. Vodafone is the world's leading international mobile telecommunications company, with equity interests in 27 countries and Partner Markets in more than 40 countries. As of 31 December 2008, Vodafone had approximately 289 million proportionate customers worldwide.  16 April 2009

Health Ministry blamed for sale of application forms

Ho, April 15, GNA - Nurses training college entry application forms which are meant to be free are allegedly being sold for 4.00 Ghana cedis each in Ho.

Some prospective applicants told the Ghana News Agency that they bought the forms at the Ho Nurses Training College even though advertisements in one of the dailies indicated that the forms could be obtained for free at the College.

One of them, who wants to remain anonymous, said she was turned away because she did not have the money to buy the forms until she called some days later with the money. She showed the GNA the form on which it was boldly written "NOT FOR SALE."

Mr. James Agboada, Principal of the Nurses Training College in Ho, said the situation arose because the Ministry of Health put the forms on the internet for people to download instead of sending them to the training institutions.

He said people who could download the forms were selling them to those prospective applicants who could not download them and the situation is countrywide and not peculiar to Ho. Mr. Agboada said the forms would be available at the Ho Nurses Training College by the end of the week for prospective applicants to obtain free of charge.

Armed robbers kill two women on Bolgatanga

bound vehicle

Bolgatanga, April 15, GNA - Armed robbers on Sunday attacked a Benz Bus travelling from Tamale to Bolgatanga and shot and killed two women, injuring four other passengers, near Karminga in the Northern Region. The Bolgatanga Municipal Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Kwame-Owusu Sekyere, confirmed the tragedy to GNA and said a tyre of the bus got bust by gunshots, forcing the driver to stop. He said the robbers fired their guns to threaten the passengers and took away their money and personal belongings, resulting in the deaths and injuries.

Sup. Sekyere said a passenger informed a policeman in Bolgatanga about the incident on mobile phone but by the time a team of police personnel got to the scene, the robbers had fled on their motorbikes.

He explained that even though the crime scene was under the jurisdiction of the Northern Region, it was the Bolgatanga police that reacted because they were nearer to the spot. Sup. Sekyere said the police were investigations the armed robbery and the injured passengers were responding to treatment at the Bolgatanga Hospital and the deceased deposited at the mortuary. Some eyewitnesses told GNA that the alleged robbers looked like Fulani men.

Rail transport to be developed to address road accidents
Accra, April 15, GNA - Mr Mike Hammah, Minister for Transport, on Wednesday said rail transport would be developed to address the recent spate of road accidents.

He said education, enforcement and engineering alone could not fully address the problem of road accidents stressing the need for rail transport to help cut down on the carnage.

The Minister made the statement when Dr Marius Haas, German Ambassador to Ghana, and Mr Yannick Aplogan, General Manager of Lufthansa in Ghana, paid a courtesy call on him in Accra.

Mr Hammah said it was difficult to sustain the country's road infrastructure and therefore appealed to the German government to cooperate with Ghana at the bilateral level so that government could access grants for development.

The Minister said the recent oil find in the country would be a challenge to the transport sector, especially the ports, since the infrastructure was poorly developed for transporting the oil. He added that, in view of the oil and gas find, the Ministry would organize a workshop in July, engaging all stakeholders in the transport industry to discuss the challenges of the oil find on the transport sector.

Dr Haas said the two countries needed to cooperate to identify strategic areas and projects that could be developed. He urged government to engage the private sector in the development agenda of the government to enable them to access funds to develop various sectors.

Saltpond-based NGO honours former President Kufuor

Mankessim, April 14, GNA - FED KASTLE Promotion Awards Foundation, a non-governmental organization based at Saltpond, has honoured former President John Agyekum Kufuor for his contributions to the development of Mfantseman Municipality and Ghana as a whole.

The organisation also awarded 20 youths from the area for various contributions they had made to the Municipality in their distinct fields of endeavours such as education, sports, music, culture and entrepreneurship.

The former President was presented with a plaque and a citation on his achievements for Ghana and Africa.

The other award winners were presented with shields and certificates at the third Mfantseman Youth Achievers Award Day at Mankessim under the theme: "Raising Young Leaders of Integrity for Sustainable Development."

Speaking at the function, Mr Francis Ejaaku Donkoh, Executive Director of the NGO said the organization decided to institute the award to honour achievers in the Municipality following a national award he also received in 2006 for his leadership role in society.

"I was so motivated that I felt I must also encourage the youths in the area to achieve excellence in their various fields of endeavour," Mr Donkoh stated.

A society, he said, which did not award achievers was not worth dying for, and urged the recipients of the awards to continue to do their best.

Osagyefo Manfo Edu VI, Omanhene of Mankessim Traditional Area told the award winners that the greatest challenge they had to overcome was how to sustain standard.

He urged them to open up to others for them to learn from their achievements. "Sharing with others makes one to know more and helps to improve standards," the chief told them. He also urged them to bear in mind that humility, respect and law-abiding were fundamental to success in life.

Mr Peter Mensah, the Manager of the Mfantseman Community Bank expressed disappointment about the level of development in the area in spite of the fact that the place stood tall in the country's political history.

He urged the youth not to expect anyone from elsewhere to develop the area for them and advised them to channel their strength into developmental activities.

Mr Anthony Arthur, the Municipal Youth Coordinator expressed concern about the incidence of teenage pregnancy in the area and appealed to parents to exert some control over their children especially young females.

Alhaji Abubakar Saddique Boniface, the former Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, who received the award on behalf of the former President, called for the need to empower the youth to develop their entrepreneurial skills.

He said this must be done devoid of partisan politics and added that good achievers could only be gotten when people buried their ideological differences. "Politics must be done in the interest of the economy", the former minister said.

Vodafone and Tigo in a brawl at Tarkwa

Tarkwa (W/R), April 14, GNA - Vodafone's promotion in Tarkwa, which started on Tuesday, ended up in a brawl between its workers and that of Tigo. According to onlookers most of the workers of Vodafone were found pasting their posters on that of Tigo's, replacing the umbrellas given to the retailers by Tigo with that of Vodafone and taking the Tigo umbrellas away. This resulted in a serious argument between Vodafone and Tigo workers who heard of Vodafone's action later. When the GNA interviewed some of the retailers, they said, they did not understand why the workers of Tigo were going round demanding their umbrellas.

According to them they were aware that almost all the mobile phone networks in Tarkwa provided umbrella, adding, if the management of Tigo needs its umbrella they should go to Vodafone. When the GNA contacted the management of both networks for their version, they refused comment.

Gomoa Afransi (C/R), April 14, GNA - Obaabun Ogyedom Obrenuwa Adwoa Yankey I, the development queen of Afransi, on Saturday observed that the high infant mortality and poverty rates were some of the challenges impeding development in the area. She has therefore promised to source funding for the construction of a modern hospital to provide quality health care for the people, particularly women and children.

Addressing the 23rd annual Akwambo festival of the Chiefs and People of Gomoa Afransi in the Gomoa East district of the Central Region, Obrenuwa Yankey said she has been "touched by the suffering of the people" and would therefore help them out of their predicament. Accept Presidents nominees for Chief Executives - Tackie-Komme

Accra, April 18, GNA - Mr. Jonathan Nii Tackie Komme, MP for Odododiodioo, has appealed to members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to accept the President's nominees for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra on Saturday, he stated that members of the party should unite now more than ever before behind the leadership of President John Evans Atta Mills to ensure that the government honoured campaign promises contained in the party's manifesto.

He noted that the nomination of the Chief Executives had generated controversy in some areas with the people rejecting the President's nominees for one reason or the other and said this did not augur well for the development and sustenance of the NDC. The MP called on members of the party to desist from opposing the President's nominees since their stand could divide the front of the party now that they should unite more than ever to ensure the success of the government.

Mr. Tackie Komme pointed out that, they should accept the President's nominees saying; "President Atta Mills is a meticulous person and anything that he dose was in the best interest of the people".

The MP, who was an elected member of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) before his election to Parliament in 2005 appealed to the Assembly Members to confirm Mr. Alfred Vanderpuije, who had been nominated by the President for the position when presented to them for consideration.

Mr. Tackie Komme reminded them of the non-partisan concept underlining the country's local government administration and asked the members to adopt a nationalistic approach to the issue. He stated that Accra needed a substantive Mayor to lead in initiating and implementing policies and programmes to tackle the many problems and challenges confronting the nation's capital. The MP noted that solutions to the daunting problems of sanitation and environmental health and the congestion of the Central Business District of Accra could not wait but had to be confronted immediately to befit the status of the city as the capital of the nation. Mr. Tackie Komme stressed the need to beautify Accra and improve its environmental sanitation to attract investors and tourists. He commended the President for nominating Mr. Vanderpuije for the position and appealed to the other contestants for the post to support his bid to become the Mayor of the capital.

Investors are invited to mine iron ore at Sheini in

the Northern Region

Tatale, April 15, GNA - The chiefs and people of Zabzugu/Tatale District are inviting investors to mine the iron ore in the Sheini community, in the Zabzugu/Tatale District, of the Northern Region for their mutual benefit.

Ghana would increase its forex earnings from the iron ore deposits, which was being mined by the Russians but was abandoned after the 1966 coup in Ghana.

The Presiding Member of Zabzugu/Tatale district Assembly, Mr Edward Dawuni Atta Abebe, made this invitation, on behalf of the chiefs and people of the area when he met the chief of Sheini Obore Chamanya Poadi at Tatale at the weekend.

Mr Dawuni Abebe said the government had created an investment friendly environment to encourage private investment, while the District Assembly, the chiefs and people have put in place measures to assist the extensive scope of investment opportunities in the district. He stated that Ghanaians living home, abroad and foreigners were invited to visit the area to invest in the district because of the peace the people were enjoying.

The district shares boundaries with Togo to the East, Yendi District to the West, Nanumba North and south and Nkwanta Districts to the South, and Saboba District to the North. It is endowed with natural resources, beautiful surroundings and a warm hospitable people. He said 90 percent of the people in the area were farmers who cultivate yams, guinea corn, millet, maize, beans, cassava, groundnuts and cowpea.

Mr Dawuni Abebe indicated that agriculture as the leading sector in the district's economy was dominated by small-scale unorganized farmers who depended on mainly simple labour intensive production techniques. The Presiding Member said the farmers produce yams in large scale and transport large quantities of the yams to the urban centres for sale.

He appealed to the government to assist the farmers to export the yams. He said exporting of some of these crops would encourage the farmers to expand their farms.

Mr Dawuni Abebe pointed out that the district has potentials, such as available pasture for livestock rearing, available land for commercial production of yams, groundnuts, millet and guinea corn but with low marketing capacity.

He said economic trees such as dawadawa, teak, kapok and mango can be found in the district.

He appealed to the government to assist the farmers with tractors and other farm input to cultivate exportable produce. On his part, the chief of Sheini, Obori Chamanya Poadi, appealed to the government to commission a geological survey to map the iron ore deposits at Sheini to support the efforts of the Assembly and the people of the district to attract investors to the area. He said the area would be blessed when the ore is mined, while the youth would be gainfully employed.

He appealed to the government to bring back the Russians if it would be possible for them to revive the project.

Four die in accident at Mempeasem on Easter Monday

Elmina, April 14, GNA - Two people died on the spot and two others later at the Central Regional Hospital at Cape Coast, when a 33-seater Benz Bus travelling from Takoradi to Accra collided head-on with a Hyundai tipper truck at Mempeasem, near Elmina on Easter Monday. The body of Joseph Essien, the driver of the Benz Bus, and those of the other three, whose identities were unknown have been deposited at the morgue at the hospital.

Superintendent Joseph S. Haywood, the Elmina Divisional Police Commander, who briefed the GNA on the accident on Tuesday, said 26 passengers on board the bus and the driver of the truck, who were seriously injured, were admitted at the hospital while three others with minor injuries were treated and discharged. According to Supt. Haywood the injuries of the victims were severe because of their contact with metals of the seats of the vehicle which were close to each other.

Supt. Haywood said the driver of the truck tried to overtake a fleet of vehicles on a roll and in the process collided with the Benz. He commended the Cape Coast and Elmina Fire Service Personnel and a man who volunteered to assist the police in conveying the victims to the hospital for their prompt response.

Mining companies asked to provide alternative livelihood training

Accra, April 13, GNA - The Ghana Mines Workers Union (GMWU) is in touch with the Ghana Chamber of Mines to compel mining companies to provide their employees with alternative employable skills which they could use elsewhere when mining ceases. Mr Isaac Gyimah, Deputy General Secretary of GMWU, told the GNA in an interview that it was important to ensure that miners were not handicapped in future when mining ends.

He said GMWU would also hold a skills conference to evolve a skills audit programme to ascertain which skills could be obtained locally. Mr Gyimah said the union had proposed that part of mining receipts could be used in developing infrastructure in mining communities. He said another area is the creation of a Fund to be sustained by royalties paid by companies and added "what we are thinking is that it should be possible to increase the present royalties being paid by the companies."

"If this is done we should agree which percentage should go to the fund instead of the district assemblies."

Mr Gyimah said the Fund should be managed by a board that should ensure that funds are used for the development of mining communities. He said the union has also identified fish farming as a potential area for bolstering economies of the communities and the union is to team up with the Chamber to get mining companies use open pits created by mining for that purpose. Mr Gyimah said mining companies should reclaim land by going into oil palm plantation.
