| Latest Ghana News Monday, 10th May 2010 WEEK 19 - 2010 | * Monday, 10th May 2010 | Metro Mass Buses Scrapped! * Source: Daily Searchlight | | Kufuor Buys Buses, Mills Sells Them As Scrap!
Report By Dennis A. BOATENG
Less than eight years after the introduction of Metro Mass Transport into the country by the erstwhile J. A Kufuor's led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, the multi-million national investment is in danger as dozens of the buses which are supposed to convey passengers; are now being cut and sold to scrap dealers!
The social intervention programme which was introduced by the New Patriotic Party is now in serious shambles as the best this new Atta Mills led National Democratic Congress government can do to better the programme is to turn grounded buses into scraps when the least it could do to savage the situation is to repair those buses.
A visit to Swedru in the Central Region by this reporter shockingly reveals that the buses are moved from various terminals within the country especially from Accra and Takoradi and brought to a base behind the Metro Mass Transport Terminal at Agona Swedru to be scrapped!
The site is a hide-out inside the premises of Mawuli's Catering Services and five meters from Golden Star FM; a local based radio station at Agona Swedru. The few people had noticed the fatalities being caused to the detriment of our dear nation.
Incidentally, when this reporter went to the site, a truck with the registration number; GR 4162 H had come to collect the cut Metro Mass Buses to Tema as disclosed by sources close to the dealers whilst some other four buses awaited their demolition.
When he spoke to some residents around, they disclosed that the act has been going on for almost a year now. When asked why they haven't reported the operations to the police, what most of them said was that; "If the care takers of the buses are right here so we think what they are doing is legal because they always come here to interact with those cutting the buses into pieces," they said.
When one of the workers of Metro Mass came to the site and was confronted by this reporter to find out if they were aware of the ongoing acts, he responded in a very harsh manner.
"These vehicles are all spoilt and we cannot get their spare parts to buy anywhere. What else do you want us to do? Or we should leave them to rot," he echoed angrily and refused to mention his name.
This happening comes as a surprise to all and sundry who come to the Mawuli Catering Services to eat or have some snacks and watch the scrap dealers with astonishing eyes. | > BACK to TOP < | Cause of "Rawlings' fire" unknown * Source: Citifmonline | The Ghana National Fire Service has established that the cause of the fire that gutted the Ridge residence of Former President Jerry John Rawlings remains unknown.
The service made this known on Monday May 10, after concluding the three months investigation of the ferocious fire which occurred on February 14, St. Valentine’s Day.
Confirming the outcome of the investigations, the Head of Public Relations of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) Mr Sam Sowah Oblejumah, told Shamima Muslim, Host of the Citi FM Eyewitness News that after months of investigating the incident, investigators’ report was not able to technically identify the cause.
He described the outcome of the investigations as ‘‘undetermined’’ which means the exact cause of the fire could not be established.
“Talking about the cause of the fire, from our report it was undetermined, but it is suspected that during that early hours of 14th February there were power fluctuations so we are suspecting that it might have been caused by the upsurge of an electrical current.”
He however noted that the inability of investigators to identify the actual cause does not mean the service is incompetent, adding that in most of the cases they have been able to determine the causes.
Mr Oblejumah further explained that the outcome was not unusual, since internationally, such incidents are sometimes “technically undetermined”.
Mr Oblejumah urged members of the public not to loose confidence in the service explaining that the outcome of the investigations was not unusual. He said the Ghana National Fire Service had the best of professionals and continues to work hard.
The GNFS said it has presented the outcome of its investigations to the National Security Council and the Interior Ministry.
He also blamed the lack of renovation on the over-aged building with weak electrical systems that needed re-examination.
Former president Rawlings’ residence at Ridge was razed down by fire on Sunday, February 14, 2010.
The entire house was burnt completely with virtually nothing left. Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Rawlings and one of her daughters, Yaa Asantewaa, who were in the house, escaped unhurt. | > BACK to TOP < | Government says it will ensure successful take-off of 4-year SHS * Source: | Cape Coast, May 10, GNA - The Minister of Education, Mr. Alex Tettey-Enyo, has said the government would provide infrastructure for a successful take-off of the four-year Senior High School (SHS) system which starts in September.
He said classrooms, dormitories, dining halls, vehicles and other facilities would be provided..
Mr Tettey-Enyo said this at the 70th Anniversary and Speech and Prize Giving Day of Aggrey Memorial A.M.E Zion Senior High School at Cape Coast. He said it would require the support of all stakeholders to ensure a smooth take-off and urged all to work in partnership with government to find solutions to the challenges to be encountered. Mr Tettey-Enyo said approval had been granted for the expansion of a two-storey 12-unit classroom block under construction in the school into a three-storey 18-unit block to accommodate more first year students. A Supreme Court judge, Mrs. Justice Margaret Welbourne who was the guest speaker, said it would require a massive investment in education to secure a better future prospect for the nation's development and improved quality life for its people.
She said it was the government's responsibility to provide accessible education to all its citizens, particularly at basic and secondary levels and urged it to make adequate budgetary allocation for the provision of infrastructure, educational materials and improved conditions of service for staff. Mrs. Justice Welbourne said the youth should be given attention and training to enable them to assume leadership positions in future. The Headmaster of the school, Mr. Akwasi Amoako Amoantwi, appealed to the government, PTA, old students and other stakeholders to assist in completing a 27-unit classroom block initiated by the PTA to create more room for the first batch of students for the four year system. On performance he said 413 candidates sat the 2008/2009 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and 384 passed in six or more subjects representing 92.98% and a significant improvement of 20.48% over that of the previous year. He said the some challenges of the school among others are insufficient classrooms, dormitories and staff bungalows, ill-resourced computer laboratories, libraries and an infirmary. He expressed gratitude to the government, the school's Board of Governors, the PTA, old students and other institutions for their support for the school. | > BACK to TOP < | Snake scatters court at Assin Fosu * Source: The Mirror | The Assin Fosu Court received an unwelcome witness last Tuesday when a huge snake appeared in the beams and the ceiling of the courtroom.
The snake was seen after the presiding judge, Mr Joseph Blay, had led the court in a short prayer prior to the day's sitting.
As soon as Mr Blay sat down to begin calling cases, the snake, measuring about six feet and as big as the forearm of a an average man, appeared right behind his head.
It appeared menacingly, wagging its tongue and prepared to bite the judge, who was completely oblivious of the looming danger behind him.
People in the courtroom who saw the dreadful situation started yelling and shouting "Jesus Christ", "God", “Awurade", Allah", with the judge completely flabbergasted.
Those who could not stand the perilous spectacle ran for their dear life and in the ensuing pandemonium, the snake was distracted momentarily, causing it to shift its attention away from the judge.
The brave ones who remained in the courtroom mustered courage and started pelting the serpent with whatever they could lay hands on - shoes, stones and sticks - and eventually succeeded in killing it.
Mr. Kwadwo Manu, a farmer who happened to be in the courtroom to listen to proceedings, told the judge that the snake was a very poisonous one whose bite could be lethal.
The Assin Fosu Court is one of the most unsuitable premises to pass as a court. Apart from the unbearable heat from the sun, the court cannot sit anytime it rains due to its leaky roof.
Speaking to The Mirror about the incident later, Mr Blay said it was manifestly important now for the Judicial Service, the government, the Assin North Municipal Assembly and the people of the urea to pool resources to find a suitable premises for the court to dispense justice to the people. | > BACK to TOP < |

| All about the Ghana Election 2008 | | | | * Monday, 10th May 2010 | God made me KING.. * Source: | Otumfuo OSEI Tutu II yesterday broke his 11 years of silence on what necessitated his ascension to the Golden Stool, categorically stating that “God made me King.”
He indicated that there were equally competent and knowledgeable Ashanti royals like him who vied for the highest position in Asanteman, noting that divine intervention enabled him to come up tops. Otumfuo made this statement at the Calvary Charismatic Centre (CCC) at Asokore Mampong in Kumasi when he visited the well-esteemed church to thank God to climax series of activities marking his 60th birthday.
Giving gratitude to God, who he described as the only Omnipotent One, the Asante Monarch said, “My potential and expertise did not enabled me to become the Asantehene.”He added that his mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem, the Asantehemaa was not a contributory factor in for his selection as the 16th occupant of the Golden Stool.
The seemingly-elated Asante King reiterated that God, who has all power, chose him to lead Asanteman and he owes him gratitude for that, stressing he would forever be grateful to God his maker. “If we forget that we owe our positions on earth to God who created us then we will go nowhere,” Asantehene said to a rapturous applause by the charged worshippers.
Otumfuo narrated that God, the creator of heaven and earth and all things, picked him as king to lead his people to affluence and that is exactly what he would aspire for during his reign. “My heart most desire is to be the Asantehene who can lead his people to development and nothing else,” he said, adding that he would as well contribute his quota to ensure peace, unity, total transformation in the country.
According to him, the title of a king alone does not satisfy him “what pleases me most is what I can do as the Asantehene to help improve the living standard of our people, especially those dwelling in the rural areas.”
He admonished leaders not to use their positions to become lords over their servants, but show passion, love and concern for the oppressed and needy in society since that is what pleases God.
Describing himself as a mere mortal being who breathes air just as every human being, the Asantehene noted that the only difference between him and his servants is his position, which according to him, was given to me by God and not by his own strength.”
Otumfuo entreated the congregation and for that matter, all believers to always remember him in their prayers so as to enable him carry out his effectual plans to help develop Asanteman and Ghana. “I need your prayers and support to enable me become the best king that we all crave for,” Otumfuo said, stressing that God alone has all power, hence the need for humanity to seek his face at all times.
Delivering the sermon, Rev. Ransford Obeng, Head Pastor, CCC said mankind exists to serve God and humanity so he urged the populace to fulfill this mission. | | . | | . | | . | | . | | . |
