Speaking at the Independence Square in Accra, where thousands of Ghanaian workers including organised labour groups gathered, President Mills said his administration had planned to implement the single spine salary structure, which seeks to enhance the conditions of all government workers in the country, as well as ensure equal pay for equal job done.
He commended Ghanaian workers for their dedication to duty in hard times and appealed to them to continue working for the nation.
President Mills said he was overwhelmed by their turn out at the event and promised that he will follow the steps of first Ghanaian President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, who worked tirelessly to build the Ghana Trade Union Congress (TUC).
For his part, Mr. Kofi Asamoah, Secretary General of the Ghana TUC, thanked President Mills for showing commitment to the implementation of the new salary policy which has been agitated for by workers for a long time.

| Latest Ghana News Sunday, 02 May 2010 WEEK 17 - 2010 | * Sunday, 02 May 2010 | Defilement Increases Drop Out Rate in School * Source: NorthernGhana.com | | A survey conducted by the Centre for Active Learning and Integrated Development has identified girl defilement and early marriage practices as some major causes of the astronomical increase in girls’ dropout of school in some selected districts of the northern region. These situations have relegated the education of the girl child in the northern region to the background which required the collective responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure that the rural girl child gains high academic laurels.
Mr. Sumani Mohammed Awal, programme coordinator of the Centre for Active Learning and Integrated Development dropped this hint at the inaugural ceremony of a one week annual regional girls camp held in Tamale. He said the rational for the camp which drew about 150 girls from basic schools in Bole, Chereponi, Karaga, Nanumba north and south, Savelugu and Tamale metropolis targeted at promoting girls education in less endowed communities as well as building their confidence levels. Mr. Sumani appealed to parents, guardians and teachers to inculcate good morals in their pupils particularly the girl child to make them become responsible citizens. Miss Augustina Achana, a representative of the participants called on government to place premium on girl child education by sponsoring the girl child education as a means of getting more female teachers in the classroom.
She bemoaned that female students in the nation’s schools have become vulnerable to rape resulting into unwanted pregnancy due to dominance of male teachers in the classroom.
Miss Augustina cited the Nanumba North district where she recounted that out of a teacher population of 208 recorded between 2008 and 2009, there were 166 male teachers against 42 female teachers and that she said was totally unacceptable.
She confessed that they were convinced that having adequate female teachers in schools would keep them safe and encourage their parents to invest in their education.
Miss Augustina chronicled several demands among which she appealed to the district assemblies especially in the affected areas to increase their scholarship quota for female students in teacher training institutions. She also urged the northern regional education directorate to provide enough resources to the girl child education unit to support female teachers working in the region.
She nonetheless commended government for introducing the free school uniform concept, increasing the capitation grant and expanding the school feeding programme as part of measures to encourage enrolment in school.
Alhaji Abudulai Harunah Friday, Mayor of Tamale commended CALID, GRAMEN Ghana, NECIDA and SONGTABA for their forethought and pledged his administration’s support to make them achieve their desirable goal in the area of promoting girl child education.
Action-Aid Ghana, Big Lottery and the Ingram Trust sponsored this year’s regional girl’s camp and activities which marked the weeklong event included street procession, interaction with traditional authorities and a visit to the regional coordinating council. | | > BACK to TOP < | Martyrs of Uganda church 'shit-bombed' *Source: Mayjoyonline | The precinct of Martyrs of Uganda Catholic Church in Accra on Sunday was been splashed with human excreta in what is believed to be in protest against the visit of Archbishop Palmer Buckle.
"We found some human excreta spread across the main entrance of the church premises this morning," Stephen Avornyo, General Secretary of the Parish Pastoral Council confirmed to Joy News' Yaa Asamoah.
Mr Avonyo said the act came as a "shock" to them, more so when there had been no disquiet or disagreements in the church.
The walls of the church also had offensive posters pasted by the unknown and disgruntled persons demanding the resignation of the resident pastor and the Archbishop.
Some of the inscriptions on the posters Steven Avonyo confirmed read; "Palmer Buckle if you want more money then sell your $2 million Trasaaco mansion.
"We want the resident priest and the Arch-bishop removed!"
Palmer Buckle is expected to officiate a confirmation ceremony at the church.
It is unclear why the act was done but sources say it is linked to recent disagreements between some members of the church and the leadership on a purported takeover of a three storey facility by the Archbishop.
Yaa Asamoah said the church premises had been cleaned up with the assembly entering its second service.
The environment she said was not stinking, at least at the time she arrived.
Meanwhile, Palmer Buckle has begun the officiating ceremony under tight security, Yaa Asamoah confirmed. | | > BACK to TOP < | President Mills mourns B. He said prisoners between 18 to 25 years formed 51.8 percent of inmates in the prisons. Air Marshal John Asamoah Bruce, Chairman of the Prisons Service Council, said these at the inauguration of the Volta Regional Prisons Committee, in Ho on Friday. He said the Council was worried that the majority of prisoners in Ghana were people in their prime, who should be contributing to national development.
Air Marshal Bruce said "To make matters worse, due to acute lack of resources, the Service is unable to offer meaningful skills training for these inmates. Prison ought to aim at achieving much more than just taking custody of prisoners". He said the Council would work hard to address problems facing the Ghana Prisons Service.
Mr. Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister, who is Chairman of the Committee, recommended the establishment of a prison in the southern sector of the region as the Fort serving as the only prison there was destroyed by sea waves. | All about the Ghana Election 2008 | | | | * Sunday, 02 May 2010 | GIA passengers stranded * Source: Kwaku Antwi-Otoo (Asempa FM) | Air passengers on board the Ghana International (GIA) have been stranded since last Wednesday without any information as to when they will fly.
The passengers who are traveling to Düsseldorf- Germany and UK have been sleeping at the Kotoka International Airport since Wednesday, but no official from the GIA has communicated to them.
This is said to have angered them as they besieged the office of the GIA early hours of Sunday.
The Passengers, some children, patients and business people, told Asempa News that it would be the last time they would board GIA flights.
A UK resident who had his return ticket with the GIA said “I have been boarding GIA flights and this would be the last time to board GIA flights.
This is not the first time, but this would be the last time. I will spread the information to other people in UK.
When I get to London I will do something, I will sabotaged the GIA”, a furious passenger told Asempa News.
She said “my mother is sick and I have to fly her to London by the close of the day for doctors to attend to her, but they are not telling us anything. It’s not nice, its disrespect, complete disrespect, at least tell us something”, she explained.
“I am not a Ghanaian but I wish Ghanaians well, but what they are doing is bad, I will do something to sabotage the whole GIA”, she warned.
Other passengers say they had run out of funds since they came all the way from as far as Brong Ahafo and Ashanti Region Regions.
“We are here to ask them to give us our money. This is what they did which lead to the collapse of the Ghana Airways.
All the white people who had their monies have boarded different flights to their various destinations, so we asking them to give us our money”, they explained.
One of the passengers who is traveling with his 4-year old boy said she had run out of funds and even money to purchase baby diapers for the son had become a problem.
“All my money is finish. I don’t even have one cedi to buy pampers for my son. He says he would defecate now, what should I do?” she wondered.
“This is the second time this is happening to me. It happened to my husband and so I and my family would never patronize GIA again”, she told Asempa News.
They said they did not give them any information while several calls to their office were not answered.
No official of the GIA was there to comment as at the time of filing the story.
But the stranded passengers allegedly told Asempa News that they piped through one of the doors of one of the offices and notice that there was someone locked in the office.
But the security refuted the allegation and said there are several people in the building and it could be other workers of other companies in the building.
The passengers alleged that an official of the GIA gave directives to the security personnel to be given to the passengers that their flight would be on Tuesday, 4th May, 2010. “This is disrespectful. How are we sure even the Tuesday would be possible. How can you pass on information to us through a security and not us directly”, they wondered.
An Official of GIA, who gave his name as Ben says he would not comment on the issue. Asked to give his full name, Ben said in Akan dialect, “wenya Ben noa fano saa, Kwaku”, meaning, if you have gotten Ben, take it like that. | | . | | . | | . | | . | | . |
