Police intercept ammunitions bound for Bunkpurugu

Tamale, May 9, GNA - The Northern Regional Police Command, on Saturday intercepted a Kumasi-Bunkpurugu bound bus at Fufulso barrier, carrying 250 pieces of cartridges meant to fuel conflicts at Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo District.

 

Three persons suspected to be the owners and identified as Jacob Kolan 39, Goori Duut, 30, Seidu Larri, 25 and the driver Ibrahim Abdala, 35 have been arrested.

 

The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh told the Ghana News Agency that the police received intelligence information that the 60-seater vehicle was carrying ammunitions. He said when the vehicle got to Fulfuso barrier at about 0400 hours, it was impounded by the police personnel after a search unveiled the ammunitions.

 

Chief Inspector Tetteh said the four persons are being investigated and would be put before court if found culpable. He warned drivers and people who have the intention to import weapons to any part of the North to desist from such acts because their activities would not elude the widely awake police.

Muslims pray for peace on Prophet Mohammed's birthday

Boadua (E/R), May 9, GNA - Muslims from Ghana and other West African States, met at Boadua in the Kwaebibirem

District of the Eastern Region, to observe the birthday of Prophet Mohammed with intercessory prayers for world peace. The all-night prayer session, organised by the West African International Foundation was attended by
representatives from Nigeria, Niger, Benin, Togo and Cameroon.

 

Sheikh Alhaji Zurkanine Yusif, Founder and Leader of the Foundation, led the congregation to pray for unity, progress and development of Ghana and for international peace and understanding.

 

He asked Ghanaians to see themselves as brothers and sisters, irrespective of their religious faith or political leanings. He said Allah wished that mankind would always live in harmony and doing away with divisions and disharmony inany shape or form.

 

Representatives from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the main opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP) at the function, asked Ghanaians to forge national unity and peace and see themselves as one people with acommon destiny.

 

The Deputy Regional Minister, Mr Babal Jamal who led the NDC, unveiled a fund set up to advance the education of

Muslims youth at Akwatia. Mr Jamal asked Muslims and people from the Zongo communities who had attained positions of influence to facilitate the development of their localities.

 

He observed that Muslims formed a large proportion of the population and should therefore be given what they deserve. Mr Abubakar Sulemana, National Co-ordinator of the Nasara Club of the NPP, called for respect, patience and
reconciliation among Zongo communities to end the culture of suspicion. He said political differences should not divide Ghanaians.

Assembly collaborating with traditional leaders to stop sales of food at funerals

Lawra, May 9, GNA - Mr. Samson Abu, Lawra District Chief Executive (DCE), said that the Assembly was collaborating with traditional leaders to prevent the sale and consumption of food and alcoholic drinks at funerals. He said the Assembly would also educate the public on the dangers of using chemicals for fishing.

The DCE who was speaking at the first ordinary session of the assembly at Lawra, said farmers would be educated on the need to refrain from farming along river banks and sources of rivers to protect water bodies for agricultural production.

He said the Assembly would educate the youth on the consequences of premarital sex among the youth to prevent teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortion and sexually transmitted diseases in the area.

 

Mr. Abu announced that the Assembly would ensure that libraries were built and old ones rehabilitated to promote education in the area.

 

He said that the Assembly would liaise with the Ghana Highways Authority to ensure that road and bridge contractors build structures to conserve water for agricultural production during the dry season.

 

Mr. Abu said the Assembly was considering establishing a kraal for cattle in transit for revenue generation and reduction in the incidence of cattle rustling in the district. The DCE said that henceforth all stray animals that would be caught in the Lawra Township would be confined.

 

He said that the Assembly was working to build Community Based Health Planning and Service (CHPS) compounds and schools for communities which had always been cut off from the area during the raining seasons.
