Otumfuo asked Ghanaians to thank God for His blessings

* Source: GNA

Kumasi, Jan 31, GNA - Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, has said Ghanaians should be thankful to God for his abundant blessings that had helped the nation to enjoy relative peace.

He said the people have every reason to be grateful to God for the social harmony and political stability. The Asantehene said they should continue praying to Him for spiritual guidance for the realization of the national socio-economic development agenda.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu said these when the Ghana Union Conference (GUC) of the Seventh-Day Adventist (SDA) Church called on him at his Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Saturday. The visit was to present to him a copy of the multi-lingual Bible consisting of 66 languages.

The Church additionally gave to the Asantehene, 40 Twi Bibles and Bible study booklets. Otumfuo Osei Tutu used the occasion to draw attention to the need for all to accept to uphold the truth, accountability and social justice.

The Asantehene vowed to provide the required leadership to help inject some pace into the progress of the people and asked for continued support.

He said the successes achieved within the 10 years of his reign had been through the collective effort, co-operation and encouragement of all the people.

He commended the SDA Church for its commitment to the nation's development, noting that since the advent of the church in the country, it had established many schools, health facilities and other social amenities to improve the lives of people.

Pastor Dr Seth Adama Larmie, President of the Conference, said the church had planned to reach out to over 20,000 people with Bibles in the different languages.

This, he said, is to help change their lives and draw them closer to God since the Bible has the ability to transform society. Pastor Larmie commended the Asantehene for his exemplary leadership that had brought peace to Asanteman.

Akufo-Addo Sacks Bodyguards

*  Source: Daily Guide

NANA AKUFO-ADDO, presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2008 elections, has suspended members of his security detail who allegedly assaulted a number of party members on Thursday night.

The injured have since been treated and discharged, and though the matter was reported to the Police, DAILY GUIDE gathered as at press time that the complainants have jointly withdrawn the case.

DAILY GUIDE sighted the withdrawal statement signed by Richard Dadzie, Nana Gyasi and Kwasi Abass in which they noted that “we have jointly resolved the matter amicably and there is no need pursuing it any further…based on the above, we discontinue the case from further Police or court action”.

In a personally signed news release, Nana Addo described the episode as “most unfortunate and regrettable.” He also personally visited the injured persons to render an apology and reassure them of his stance against violence.

Unconfirmed reports say the said bodyguards, numbering about seven, on Thursday night raided the NPP Greater Accra Regional secretariat and ‘put the fear of God’ in some party members for allegedly raining insults on Nana Addo.

Party sources say one of the injured persons, Seth Opoku, is the alleged ringleader of a group that consistently rains insults on Nana Addo and that they publicly bad-mouthed the former presidential candidate at the Kotoka International Airport during the arrival of the body of the late Courage Quashigah.

The insults and counter insults were said to have been revived at the premises of the party headquarters during the recently held National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and again on Thursday just before the live-telecast of the Ghana-Nigeria crunch match.

Nana Addo, in his statement noted: “I have always been opposed to the use of force to resolve political disputes or arguments. I have thus consistently advised all members of my staff and sympathizers not to respond violently to any provocations, taunts or insults directed against me.

“I hereby call on all members of our party to consider the wider implications of their actions and conduct themselves in a manner which will foster unity and singleness of purpose amongst us. It is my fervent prayer and hope that we all work together to promote peace and harmony within the NPP,” Nana Addo added.

Nana Addo, Kofi Osei-Ameyaw, and a number of party bigwigs spent the entire Thursday night shuffling between the Nima Police Station where the case was reported and visiting the injured persons at Ridge Hospital to ensure all was well with them.

Reports indicate that Kofi Osei-Ameyaw was instrumental in getting the matter settled amicably. He would however not comment on the matter when sighted by DAILY GUIDE at the Nima Police Station.

One of the assaulted persons, Seth Opoku, is a staff of the regional office and told an Accra-based radio station that the said bodyguards and some other persons stormed the office moments after the Ghana-Nigeria match and started to beat up people without provocation.

Adjei Sowah, a regional executive and former parliamentary candidate for Odododiodoo, is also reported to have told a number of journalists that the attack was unprovoked.

The attackers, after brutalizing their victims, took to their heels and vamoosed into thin air.

Meanwhile, General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Ohene Ntow, has condemned the alleged assault and implored the leadership of the party to bring Nana Addo and Alan Kyerematen together to talk to their supporters to avoid disunity in the NPP.

“I think that we have to bring those two personalities together with the leadership of the party to discuss these issues thoroughly, honestly and realistically and then based on whatever

decisions we arrive at, we send that message throughout the party structure, get the two of them to make public statements and commitment and get their supporters to realize that this is not what is going to get the party where we need to go,” he said.

Nana Ohene Ntow lamented the rate at which mere support for people has suddenly degenerated into physical attacks.

He said the development is foreign to the NPP as a party and should therefore be confronted and dealt with as soon as possible.

“This is a matter of serious concern to me because I do not see how the mere fact that someone supports this person and you support the other person should lead to physical attacks.

“This is a party that anytime there is internal election, you will have party members supporting this person or the other. It has always been the case and I do not see why suddenly this should become an extraordinary problem.”

Appeal Court judge urges Ghanaians to resort more to ADR process

* Source: GNA

Ho, Jan. 31, GNA - Justice Samuel Marful-Sau, Court of Appeal Judge in charge of the National Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) programme, has urged Ghanaians to use the ADR process to settle petty differences instead of trial procedures at the courts. He said this would reduce the load of trial cases to enable the judiciary to channel more efforts and skills on those matters or issues that are too difficult to resolve and therefore require trials at the courts.

Justice Marful-Sau was addressing the first of three public sensitization forums planned for the Volta Region in Ho last Thursday on the Court-Connected ADR.

The two other forums for the region, is scheduled for Jasikan and Dzodze on February 4, and 10, this year respectively. The forums formed part of an ongoing nationwide programme.

Besides the forums, the Judicial Service of Ghana ADR team would meet with mediators and magistrates and staff of courts in the region. Mr Justice Marful-Sau said the time-tested mediation process practiced long time ago had some advantages over the court system. He said while the court system normally brushed the sensibilities of litigants, the ADR procedure was less confrontational. Mr Justice Marful-Sau said besides the court-connected ADR process, where cases on mutual agreement of the sides were withdrawn, settled and decisions documented, there were several other avenues for mediation through for instance the families, churches and chieftaincy arrangements.

He said the nation must build a justice system that is fluid and trustworthy to gain the confidence of investors. Chiefs, religious leaders, heads of the security services and district assemblies were some of the groups that attended the Ho forum.

Farmer allegedly shoots man over pears

* Source: GNA

Asamankese, Jan. 31, GNA - Kwabena Ofori, a 54-year-old farmer, who allegedly shot a man over pears, has appeared at a circuit court at Asamankese for causing unlawful harm. The accused, who pleaded guilty, would re-appear at court on February 15.

The court asked him to remain on his original bail of GHC 5,000 with two sureties to be justified. The accused, who was initially charged with attempted murder and possessing fire arm without authority had his charges changed. Police Inspector Stephen Atsu Gamado, told the court that this followed advice by the Attorney-General's Department. Prosecution told the court that the complainant, Kofi Asare, went to farm at Dwenase in the Eastern Region on June 5, 2008, and plucked some pears from another farm because he was hungry. Insp. Gamado said while Asare was plucking the fruits, Ofori emerged from a nearby farm with a single barrel gun and ordered him (Asare) to come down from the pear tree.

Prosecution said the accused ordered Asare to accompany him to Dwenase with the pears he had plucked. Insp. Gamado said on the way to the town the accused shot at the legs of Asare and left him to his fate. Prosecution said Asare managed to go home and he was rushed to the St. Dominic Hospital at Akwatia where he was admitted. Insp. Gamado said the Police at Apinamang arrested the accused.

Ghana miss Nations Cup glory

 Source: GhanaFa.org

Setback for Ghana as Egypt scores a late winner to clinch the African Nations Cup title in Luanda.

Mohamed Gedo scored in the 85th minute as the holders broke down the Ghana right to lift an unprecedented third successive title, and a record seventh overall, bringing to an end the three-week continental showpiece in Angola which defied all pre-tournament predictions.

Egypt finished the game 1-0 winners.

Late on, Ghana's search for an equaliser failed to materialize as a ball lobbed just did not fall for Eric Addo to connect.

That miss sealed Ghana's day as the Black Stars failed to annex a fifth title.

The entire football world, witnessed the inspirational story to have come out of the competition which has to be the emergence of a youthful, hard working Ghana team and Milovan Rajevac.

But Ghana, with the odds always stuck against them will feel hard done after having the game’s best chances in the second half.

The opening ten minutes saw both sides go in search of goal after which the tempo of the game was considerably slowed.

It was less dramatic in the first half as Koman Coulibaly ended the first half with no cards handed any of the twenty-two players on the field at the November 11 Stadium.

Opoku Agyemang was the only Ghanaian to have picked up a yellow card as Egypt had three players picking up cards.

Ghana defended neatly as they continued with their efficient work ethic throughout but were helpless when Gedo finished off a swift one-two.

The Ghana team will be heartbroken but the new generation of Black Stars appear to have exceeded expectations and the team's rise bodes well for another major competition ahead, the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa.

Starting team: Richard Kingson, Samuel Inkoom, Hans Adu Sarpei, Lee Addy, Isaac Vorsah, Emmanuel Agyeman-Badu, Andre Ayew, Anthony Annan, Asamoah Gyan/Dominic Adiyiah, Kwadwo Asamoah, Opoku Agyemang/Eric Addo

Subs: Philemon McCarthy, Ibrahim Ayew, Mathew Amoah, Moussa Narry, Ransford Osei, Jonathan Mensah, Haminu Draman, Eric Addo, Daniel Adjei, Dominic Adiyiah, Harrison Afful

Tamale Metropolitan Assembly creates 3,300 jobs last year

* Source: GNA

Tamale Metropolitan Assembly says it created about 3,300 jobs in 2009 under its infrastructural development project.

These jobs according to Alhaji Abudulai Haruna Friday, the Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE) occurred in Metro Works Unit, Metro Roads Unit, Metro Transport Unit, Sanitation (Zoomlion) and Support for Agriculture programme.

Alhaji Friday said this at the weekend during an awards night organized to honour distinguished individuals and institutions for their invaluable contributions to the development of the metropolis.

In terms of revenue performance, he said the Assembly generated a total of GH¢606,776.64 which enabled it to defray greater part of its inherited debt from the previous administration.

He said of the revenue, GH¢2,080,540.69 was committed to projects execution in the areas of education, sanitation, health, local government and roads.

Alhaji Friday said through the Bilchinsi Peace Advisory Council, Metro Task Force and Community Task Force, peace and security in the area was restored by picking early warning signals of violence and conflicts and managing them.

He said the Assembly had also developed Ghana-Tamale Textile project, which aims at utilizing about 60 per cent of cotton produced in the region.

The MCE said under the government’s Block Farm Programme, the Metropolitan Agriculture Development Unit acquired 1,365 acres of land in nine communities with 1,023 farmers benefiting from the package, which include ploughing, seed weedicide and fertilizer. The repayment would be done in cash.

Alhaji Friday said the Assembly was collaborating with the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) to provide pipe-born water to nine peri-urban communities. Rain water harvesting tanks are also to be provided to some communities in collaboration with New Energy.

Forty-five institutions and individuals were honoured with motorbikes, bicycles, mobile phones, wellington boots and certificates.
