Fourteen deaths have already been recorded between January 1st, 2010 and January 22, 2010 in the region. The Upper East Regional Director of Ghana Health Service, Dr. John Koku Awoonor-Williams, said this during the opening of the Regional Health Review Meeting on Thursday under the theme" Upper East Region at 50 years; Achieving Better Health and Wealth Creation." He said the 14 deaths early this year served as a warning and required urgent attention.
Dr Awoonor-William said his outfit was working closely with the national office to take steps to avert any major catastrophe witnessed in the Region in 1996-1997 when the region recorded 18,703 cases with 1,356 deaths. He said the Regional Health Directorate had taken delivery of 100,000 doses of Polysaccharide AC vaccines for vaccination and the objective of the exercise was to reach 100,000 people. Dr Awoonor-Williams complained about doctors who refused posting to the Region and said the doctor patient ratio remained almost the same one doctor to 34,000 patients.
He said another major problem facing health personnel in the Region was accommodation and appealed to other organizations to assist. The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr. Mark Woyongo, commended the Management and Staff of the GHS for their hard work and urged them to keep it up.
He said it had been agreed that each of the nine districts sponsors five medical students as well as health personnel on yearly basis as a means of ensuring the availability of health staff in the Region. He said he was engaging traditional leaders, Municipal and District assemblies and other relevant organizations to find ways of solving the perennial land problems in the Region to pave way for more health facilities to be built. Mr. Woyongo indicated that the District Assemblies would continue to build Community Health Planning System (CHPS), adding the abandoned polyclinic in the Bolgatanga Municipality would be completed to augment the Regional Dospital. | | | | ______________________ |

| * Thursday, 04 February 2010 | | GPRTU calls for road toll review * Source: GNA | Accra, Feb.4, GNA - The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), on Thursday appealed to the Minister of Roads and Highways to review the recently introduced toll rates downwards to enable vehicle owners to break even. It also asked all branch Unions to maintain the current approved lorry fares, while the leadership of the mother Union makes efforts to meet the sector Minister on the issue.
A press release issued in Accra on Thursday and signed by Mr Alando A. Sidik, General Secretary of the GPRTU, said the recent increases of road and bridge tolls was discussed at the Union's management meeting, where it was observed that the new tolls would affect transport owners' incomes adversely.
It said, for instance, an Urvan Bus from Accra to Ho which was previously paying eight Ghana Pesewas as at January 31, 2010, was now paying one Ghana Cedi.
"A round trip of that bus, that is by crossing the motorway, Afienya and Adomi in and out, which used to attract 48 Ghana Pesewas, now attracts Six Ghana Cedis per round trip a day," the release explained. If that type of bus is working for Six days in a week and is multiplied by four weeks times 12 months the total amount would be about 1,800 Ghana Cedis per year, it said. The release added apart from this, the vehicle owner also pays income tax and that the cost of all vehicle documentation processes have been increased as well. It therefore appealed to the Minister of Roads and Highways to review the toll rates downwards to enable vehicle owners to break even. | | > BACK to TOP < | Northern Star Tomato Company is ready for production * Source: GNA | Pwalugu (U/E), Feb 4, GNA - The Northern Star Tomato Company (NSTC) at Pwalugu near Bolgatanga is ready to start production, the consultant for the project, Mr. Charles Gunu, has said.
He said this when the Upper Eat Regional Minister, Mr. Mark Woyongo, paid a day's working visit to the factory on Thursday. The about five million-dollar rehabilitated factory would bring a sigh of relief to tomato farmers who are confronted with problems of marketing of their produce and confrontations with Market Queens who buy tomatoes from neighbouring Burkina Faso leaving the local farmers to their fate. Mr. Gunu, who led the Minister round the factory, said machines at the facility including a Boiler, an Evaporator, a Finisher, a Washer, and a Separator as well as a Tomato processor have been tested, certified and ready for production.
He said 2.8 million Ghana cedis was required for the company to purchase 23,000 empty tomato crates, tomatoes and a means of transport to cart the vegetables from the various locations within the region to the factory.
Briefing the Minister on the supply of water to the Company, the Regional Manager in charge of Distribution at the Ghana Water Company (GWCL) in Bolgatanga, Mr. George Ayanoore, said there were problems in supplying water to the factory because the GWCL did not have the required water pumping machine to pump water to the factory. He however gave the assurance that in two weeks the equipment would be in place.
Mr. Richard Kansang, a private Electrical contractor in charge of electrical works at the company, said about 90 per cent of the work is completed and that some few machines were needed to start full scale electrical powering of the factory | | > BACK to TOP < | NPP Must Ban Alan & Nana Addo - Dan Botwe *Source: Citifmonline | The Director of Campaign Strategy of the main opposition New Patriotic Party and Member of Parliament for Okere constituency, Dan Botwe, says the party secretariat must be bold to place an embargo on Nana Akufo-Addo and Alan Kyeremanteng from campaigning for the party's flagbearership position.
According to him this will help put a stop to the unending debate and commentary about the so called Nana Addo and Allan Kyeremanteng factions in the party. Mr. Botwe told Citi News that if the situation is not checked, it will be detrimental to the party’s quest to reclaim power in 2012.
He advised the party leadership to learn from the approach of the ruling NDC when an embargo was placed on campaigning for positions in their national executive election before an official lift was announced.
“…by December this year we will select our flagbearer…obviously people are positioning to sell themselves, I expect the NPP to take a cue from what the NDC did, even in the national executive elections, they (NDC) put an embargo, nobody could campaign …and that is what the party secretariat should be bold enough to do to cut off all this Alan and Akuffo Addo nonsense”. Dan Botwe said.
Mr. Botwe added that he was dismayed that issues about Nana Addo and Alan Kyeremanteng were clouding all the good work the party had done in organizing successful elections in about 21,000 polling stations and at regional levels as well.
He added that both Nana Akuffo-Addo and Alan Kyeremanteng cannot claim that they have contributed more to NPP than other members and therefore their ambitions of becoming flagbearer of the party should not cloud the party.
“Who is Alan Kyeremanteng and Akuffo-Addo when we come to the scheme of things for this party the two of them cannot say that they have done something more than anybody, even me, none of them can claim that their contribution to NPP is greater than mine…I am prepared to challenge anybody on that”. He added The NPP is scheduled to hold its national executive congress on February 27, to elect a new set of leadership to lead the party to the country’s general elections in 2012. | | > BACK to TOP < | Kufuor can help solve challenges in NPP * Source: GNA | Accra, Feb. 3, GNA - Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a Founding Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on former President John Agyekum Kufuor, to intervene and help solve the party's current challenges.
"I appeal to former President Kufuor to be the neutral figure that the party so badly needs to heal the wounds of the past," he said.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, former Ghana's Ambassador to Serbia and Montenegro, was addressing a press conference in Accra on Wednesday to express his sentiments on the current internal differences in NPP.
"As a founding member of this party, I refuse to keep quiet when I know that these developments are gradually but critically destroying the fabric of our great party", he said.
He said the pillars laid down by selfless leaders of the Danquah-Busia-Dombo tradition should be built upon by successive generations but not to be destroyed.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe noted that the early leaders with enviable leadership qualities provided strong and firm structures for the party to thrive from one generation to the other.
"The founding fathers of our tradition always looked at the larger interest of the party. They forgave, forgot and never persuaded their personal agenda," he said.
On the leadership struggle, he said, in 1960 there was a leadership struggle between Professor K.A. Busia and Mr. Joe Appiah that was solved even though Mr. Appiah left to form his own party.
Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said, the party also faced a leadership struggle in 1979 that led to the party's failure in the elections but the leadership united later.
According to Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe, the NPP had a tradition of selecting a flag bearer, which had been tested throughout these years and had greatly helped the party in numerous ways.
He said the party could only win Election 2012 when they followed the laid down traditions and the recent constitutional amendments to allow only five aspirants to contest for the position of a flag bearer.
"Our party lost Election 2008 because the 17 aspirants were too many, this brought divisions in the party," he said. | > BACK to TOP < |
