Mr Jacob Amoah, District Health Director, said a total of 36 cases were recorded in 2009 as against 37 the previous year. He said some of the causes were delays in reporting to the health facilities for supervised delivery, failure of pregnant mothers to attend ante-natal clinic, inefficient transport system and poverty. Addressing an annual performance review meeting at Ejura, Mr Amoah said there were also two maternal deaths during the period under review. The district with a population of 109,594 and 125 communities has four doctors, 21 nurses and four midwives.
The Health Directorate has no vehicle while the district hospital lacks an ambulance, X-ray equipment, children and casualty wards. Dr Joseph Oduro, Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of Health Service, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency in an interview, confirmed that the number of still births in the area was high. He said the Regional Directorate had initiated action to capture the causes and determine appropriate interventions to reverse the situation. Mr Benjamin Kuupil, Administrator of the district hospital also raised concern about the rising cases of Hepatitis "B". A total of 88 cases were seen by the facility in 2009, as against zero in 2008. He therefore appealed to the communities to report all suspected cases for prompt treatment since the disease was infectious and dangerous. | | | | ______________________ |

(c) picture: ghana-net.com Mr. Ayeh who expressed concern about the unfortunate situation in an interview with the Ghanaian Times said the euphoria which greeted the laudable national campaign and the institution of Chocolate Day had taken a nose dive due to lack of support.
The 14th of February every year is celebrated world-wide as Valentine's Day, a day in commemoration of a Catholic priest who went by that name and who, we are told, symbolised love. Ghana has also decided to use the day to promote its local chocolate by declaring the day Chocolate day. "The support that is expected from stakeholders to make the project stand on its feet is not forthcoming.
Companies such as the Cocoa Processing Company, Barry Callebaut, Cadbury and others who stand to benefit economically from this noble campaign are seriously sitting on the fence," he said. He said whilst the tourism sector was doing everything possible to sensitise Ghanaians to develop the habit of consuming chocolate, the corresponding support from the chocolate manufacturers was just not forthcoming. "It is a very unfortunate situation indeed.
If the various parties to this national crusade do not work in tandem for the overall success of Ghana's economy, outsiders will capitalize on it and foreign chocolate products will flood our market as we are experiencing now," he said.
Mr. Ayeh said apart from promoting love, the local consumption of chocolate or cocoa came with a variety of benefits. "Research by two nutritionists at the University of Arizona at Tucson concluded that emotions, social values, sensory quality, chemicals and the hormonal cycles of women all contribute to our cravings for chocolate," he said.
Three million tonnes of cocoa are produced annually, with the current global value now standing at 5.1 billion. Throwing more light on the health benefits of cocoa, he said, a study in Spain, reported that cocoa contained more than 600 chemicals that help in fighting cancer and heart diseases and could also help strengthen the immune system, fight rheumatism and alleviate stress. "It is also revealed that flavanoids in chocolate help reduce the incidence of blood clotting, the leading cause of heart attacks and strokes," he said.
He said dark chocolate has a high content of cocoa solids, about 70 per cent of cocoa and no or very little milk. It contains up to 12 per cent milk solids. Dark chocolate can either be sweet, semi-sweet or unsweetened. It is the most recommended of all chocolate products, experts say.

The Regional Security Council has visited the scene of the incident and beefed up security to forestall breach of the peace. No arrest has been made.
Briefing the Ghana News Agency about the incident in Sunyani on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Seth Charles Oteng, Regional Police Commander, said the police had information that for some time now some Fulani herdsmen had allowed their cattle to graze and destroy people's farms in the area.
He said last Saturday a settler Dagarti farmer spotted one Fulani herdsman with the cattle grazing and destroying his farm. DCOP Oteng said the farmer confronted the Fulani herdsman and in the process a scuffle ensued between them and in the process the Fulani man pulled a gun and fired at the farmer at close range killing him instantly. The Regional Police Commander said information about the death of the farmer got to the youth of Akokoa, who barricaded the main road in the area to seek vengeance.
DCOP Oteng said they then subjected all vehicles to a search and in the process spotted two Fulani herdsmen and killed them instantly. When the other Fulani herdsmen in the area heard about the killings of their colleagues they fled the town leaving behind their cattle, he said. DCOP Oteng said the police would arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of the crime.
He said the police did not have authority to drive away Fulani herdsmen from the area and advised the people not to take the law into their hands, but to assist the police to restore peace and order. | | > BACK to TOP < | Mother and child abuse dominate human rights issue in Upper West * Source: GNA | Wa, Jan. 26, GNA - Teenage mothers and children are the most neglected and poverty stricken in the Upper West Region, a human rights official revealed and described it as the worst form of human rights abuse. Out of about 349 cases of human rights abuses that were recorded last year in the region, 229 of them fell within that category. Mr. Siddique Ubeidu, the Acting Regional Director of the Commission, on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in a telephone with to GNA in Wa said men who father these children are to blame as they do not provide the basic necessities of life such as shelter, clothing, food, education and health to the women and children.
The Acting Director attributed the problem to the high level of poverty and illiteracy as well as irresponsible behaviour on the part of some parents.
He called for the provision of quality education for children and their teenage mothers as they constituted a significant percentage of the country's ignorant and suffering population.
"Lack of education and employment breeds criminals, it is therefore important to educate our children well so that they can become responsible and contribute to the economic growth of the country", he pointed out. Touching on other forms of human rights abuses in the region, Mr. Ubeidu mentioned failure to honour obligations or pay End of Service Benefits (ESB) by some employers as some of the cases that the Commission had been trying to resolve.
He said the Commission was extensively engaged in public education through meetings with opinion leaders in the communities including formation of human rights clubs in the various Senior High schools in the region. "We counsel women too on the need to venture into income generating activities to enable them support their families". He however stated that the Commission lacked the necessary resources especially in the area of transport to enable it function effectively and called on philanthropists, NGOs and other organisations to help. | | | > BACK to TOP < |

| | | | * 26.01.2010 | Blame Mills if Black Stars fail to win Africa Cup - NPP MP * Source: GNA | Accra, Jan. 26, GNA - The Member of Parliament for Atwima Mponua, (NPP) Mr Isaac Kwame Asiamah, on Tuesday said Ghanaians should blame President John Atta Mills if the Black Stars fail to win the Cup in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Angola.
Mr Asiamah explained that the removal of Mr Rashid Pelpuo, as Minister for Youth and Sports at this time of the competition would definitely go a long way at lowering morale in the Stars camp, particularly when he has not been re-assigned.
The MP was contributing to a congratulatory statement read at the resumed sitting of Parliament on Tuesday by Mr Stephen M. E. Ackah, Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Youth and Sports to the Black Stars for reaching the semi-final stage of the competition.
Mr Asiamah said although he had no control over the reshuffling powers of the President, he felt Mr Pelpuo should have been allowed to stay on to the end of the tournament before his removal is announced.
He, however, congratulated the Stars for their sterling performance even though the team started the tournament on a shaky note and hoped that they would reach the finals and subsequently come home with the Cup.
Mr Alban S. Bagbin, Majority Leader said the performance of the young players currently in camp of the Stars was a demonstration that they were ever ready to take up the leadership mantle of the team.
He urged the team to continue to put up their best to prove to the world that it was not only age that plays football but experience and good technical orientation could lead to good performance on the field of play.
Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Minority Leader said playing without most of the key players of the national team and winning two out of three matches was an achievement that deserved commendation from every well
meaningful Ghanaian. He said the performance of the team was even more commendable when they managed to beat Angola, the host nation who were touted to reach the finals of the competition and hoped tat the injured players would
recover to form a formidable team for the June 2010 World Cup competition.
Mr Ackah said it would be unfair to gloss over the performance of the Black Stars, particularly when they were not given a dog's chance in the competition after they lost their first match to the Elephants of Cote d'Ivoire | | | | | | |
